He is the main issue causing this team to fail. He is a great defensive coach, but he has not done a decent job with the offense in three years. He must do better!

Either his offense is too much for his personnel or they just suck at executing it. Either way figure it out before Auburn.

RE: Penny is right
What was said about Navy's qb yesterday is the same issue Memphis is currently encountering at the starting pg spot. Without a dynamic pg, the NBA style offense won't work.

Running a NBA offense without NBA players can be a bit problematic.

I'll give the new guys a pass, but no excuse from our returning players. Hopefully they can figure it out these next 2 games.

RE: Penny is right
I don't think the color commentator who did the VCU game was trying to insult Penny, but his words were pretty damning. He said he couldn't tell what the Tigers were trying to do on offense because it didn't look like they had any kind of a game plan. He also said it seemed like the players had the mentality of "I haven't shot the ball in a while, I guess I'll shoot it."

Last year, Dicky V called one of our games and said essentially the same thing. He said the Tigers dribbled and moved without any purpose.

I really want Penny to succeed, but this trend is very troubling. It really doesn't matter to me if it's the players not executing or if it's simply a bad game plan, either way the job is not getting done. And that falls on the head coach.

These dudes were brought in with the express intent of getting ready for the NBA, not to win in college. Watching the first three games, it looks like last year. Loads of physical talent and no heart. Just dudes going through the motions, thinking about their first NBA paycheck.

Ironically, I have yet to see anyone on this year's team that will make it to the NBA. Maybe Cisse in a couple of years.

Yeah, that's issue #1.

NO ONE on this team will be drafted in the 1st round this year. MAYBE Cisse (based on upside) could be a 2nd rounder. Maybe Nolley gets a look, but I haven't seen enough of him to really get an idea of why he would be considered a NBA draft option.

DJ and Boogie need to either accept they aren't going to the NBA and get with the program or just opt out.

They can both be very good, maybe great, CBB players but NBA--c'mon man.

What do these guys have in common?

Andre Turner, Tony Madlock, Chris Garner, Antonio Burks, Andre Allen and even Willie Kemp?

I happen to think this is a bit deeper.....I feel that we (as in Memphis basketball) are in a "good" phase....However the manner in which it's being handled is subpar, at best.... allow me to explain...

I think the recent NBA successes,ie; Wiseman; Precious along with 4k.....Have given our program a boost....A boost that gives our players a "signal" that "It CAN be done HERE".....So, the players, have a sense of urgency, therefore are attempting to make our games an audition for "The next level"...
The problem lies where this shows in-games as being undiscplined....Especially in losses, and this responsibility lies with the coaches and specifically Penny, as players should be held accountable to ALWAYS do the little things or fundamentals and then we can let loose and have some fun.....But that doesn't come without ;Boxing out on defense, or a plan of making the defense react to our movement of the ball.....Not having a "leader" on the court makes this issue exude as well....."Alo" is NOT the answer

Exactly. The dropoff from NBA talent to college is major.

I’m not seeing an NBA style offense, as a matter of fact, I’m not seeing much of any sets.

VCU pressure our guards near mid court. None could get by their defender and dribbled without purpose for much of the shot clock. They tried setting screens but VCU did a nice job of switching and again, our guards couldn’t beat them off the dribble. This happened over and over. I thought they’d eventually send someone to the top of the key to receive the ball, but I can’t remember it happening. Finally it would end up into a wild drive (and usually a turnover) and a miss. Occasionally they got a decent three point shot but couldn’t hit a shot.

There is no go-to player. Precious was the guy last year that could get you a basket when you needed one. I just don’t see that player this year. Looks like another year of one on one basketball....

Precious got the ball on the perimeter and was able to beat whoever was guarding him. He is a great athlete, who is also a great finisher and a great offensive rebounder. IF we had players that could do the same thing, we would be fine. We don't yet.

RE: Penny is right
Man I saw the Indiana and Florida State game on TV the other night and both teams ran a really good and non stop offense. Constant ball/player movement. It worked really well and it was not what we see from the Tigers. Of course maybe that is just a different scheme, but I hate seeing players standing around.
