82-67 Rice. Pera will probably hate the defensive effort tonight. And Olivari (now with 33) is kind of hiding what hasn't been an overly efficient night on offense. Excluding him the team is 15-51 (29%) and 6-23 (26%).

Fiedler and Abercrombie have shown some good minutes. Too many open looks for HBU

RE: MBB v. HBU
Rice wins 90-79. An atrocious second half defensive performance in which HBU scored 45 on 47% shooting. Can't ever give up 79 points against a team as poor as HBU. Olivari with 35 in 22 minutes, but he started forcing some shots as the game went on.

I'm interested in how the rest of the team will respond to Olivari's propensity to shoot, as well as Abercrombie's. Because Abercrombie takes a pretty decent number of shots in limited minutes too, and he hasn't made them at the clip that Olivari has. The two of them took an outrageous 31 shots in a combined 44 minutes, whereas the starters took 34 shots in a combined 131 minutes. Now obviously we probably don't win without Olivari today, but him taking this many shots will likely not be a recipe for success against good teams in conference.

A good game for Fiedler: 8 points, 16 rebounds, 4 assists. This is what he needs to do against these types of opponents. Good bounce back from Mullins who had some big buckets down the stretch and ended with 14. Thought Havsa had a pretty good all-around game as well (8 pts, 3 reb, 5 ast, 3 steals).

Still, Olivari's 35 points are the 12th most scored in the past 10 years for players who played fewer than 25 minutes.

Some stuff to clean up but the game was never in doubt against a (really bad) team that we've struggled with in the past.

I'll take it. Hope we can find an opponent to replace UIW.

HBU had our number during the Rhoades years so I'll take it. I'll also take 5-1 for now, though we've clearly got plenty of room to improve. Those were not good teams we beat, but we've all seen the recent years where we have not beaten bad teams, so I will take it.

RE: MBB v. HBU
So I was able to work the New Mexico game and do have some belated observations (from the 2nd row - we used to be courtside but computer stats are now on the 2nd row).

First off, Ondigo was not on the court for the UNM game. Poteat was in warm-ups and I still think we need him - if for nothing else to give a few minutes of rest to Fiedler and Abecrombie (really the only other two big guys).

Speaking of Abecrombie, he's not 6-9. He's not even close to that. 6-7 maybe? But I do like his game and feel like getting him and Evee eligible this year totally has saved this season.

I agree with the others that Olivari needs to start. I realize that they like his firepower off the bench (something we did with Martin last year), but here's what I would do...

Against small teams, start Olivari instead of Clark. Against big teams, start Abecrombie instead of Clark. Either way, I think Clark would be better off the bench as I really don't think he and Havsa together is a great combination. It gives you defense but at the sacrifice of scoring.

Finally, Mullins looks closer to his freshman form than his sophomore season so that's good. He didn't hit his shots against UNM, but in general, we had decent enough looks against UNM but the shots didn't fall.

We'll be competitive against smaller teams. Against larger, more physical teams, we'll struggle.

Any chance you got eyes on Hutchins? Still haven't seen any news on him and am interested in whether he is in fact redshirting

I forgot to look or ask about him, but I did notice he had a nice blog on the Rice web site the other day - it's a quality read.

Wow! Whose performance lead in this category?

Mason Peatling of Eastern Washington fame scored 54 points in 23 minutes against a non-D1 team last year. 24-30 from the field. The biggest shock? He only took *one* three.

If you take out games against non-D1 teams, Sports Reference is telling me that Olivari's 35 points would be tied for the 5th most in the past 10 years.

Thanks! I see how you did that. Nifty.

I see that another T12 (35 points in 25 or fewer minutes played) was achieved just on Friday (Dec. 11): TSU's John Walker scored 35 points in 20 minutes vs Letourneau! :-) 15 of 18 FGs, 5-6 FTs and NO 3's attempted!

Friday must have been Hot & Fast Shooting Day. Walker's Friday performance is #1 in points scored since the 2010-11 season when playing 20 or fewer minutes ... and 2nd is Luka Garza, who also on Friday shot 34 points in only 17 minutes against Iowa State! (So Garza actually scored at a higher rate, 2.00 vs. 1.75 points/minute played.)
