Ill be a JMU fan whether we are playing in the Cure Bowl against FIU after a 10-2 season in a G5 conference or in the National Semifinals in FCS. I'll like playing P5s at home when we go FBS but will certainly miss playing meaningful postseason games. I see it as the only 'pro' in the pro column of FCS, but it feels like an important one to me.
The NCAA has supreme interest in G5 football. The College Football Playoff does not. 2 different things.
We should look at how things are going to be, not how they are.
The Playoff will not remain at 4 teams. That is a lock. There is too much TV money being left on the table with only 4 teams involved and we know the P5 operate out of greed not out of a concern for equitable competition. The new contract is in 2025.
If the P5 desires to split from the NCAA, then the NCAA should let them but only if all sports in P5 split from the NCAA, not just football. Goodbye March Madness for those schools and their lion’s share of the $ Billion TV contract.
Let’s say they go anyway (which they will regret if they do because 50% of the P5 programs will be losers every year without the ability to get 3 creampuff OOC wins to disguise their 3-6 conference record).
Once the P5 is gone, The NCAA could quickly replicate the football playoffs they have in all other divisions. The G5 plus a handful of FCS programs willing And able to move up would give you about 70 teams which sets up perfectly for a 16 team playoff.
Let’s say the P5 doesn’t split because they don’t want to lose the March Madness money. We will still see a larger playoff field in the next TV contract, but the College Football Playoff will restrict access to control the money. In this case, we will see an 8 team playoff before a 16 team playoff as TV contracts are signed for multiple years. So it may be another 10 years to see the ultimate 16 team playoff format.
An 8 team format still keeps most, if not all, of the money with the P5 but chances for a G5 to crash the party would be double what they are now. There will be more opportunity to play meaningful postseason games for an undefeated G5 team.
