What Does the NCAA Extra Year of Eligibility Mean for Recruiting?
How will COVID-19 extra eligibility impact college coaches’ rosters and recruiting needs?

Can all you smart dudes help speculate on specifics of how this will effect Rocket FB and BB upcoming? I've seen various ideas on different threads but thought this a big enough deal for its own thread.

RE: What Does the NCAA Extra Year of Eligibility Mean for Recruiting?
A friend in an FBS AD explained this to me rather succinctly. Players can stay another year, they will not count towards the scholarship limits, but they will obviously still be offered scholarships by the AD (otherwise, what is their incentive to stay?), so schools will either have to shell out millions of additional unplanned expenses in scholarship for those students, or wish them well in the transfer market should they want to stay another year. In his words, "If you thought the transfer market has been bad in the past, this next year is going to be horrible."

Due to the limited roster sizes, this is going to hit basketball recruits far worse than football recruits...so I'd expect there to be a ton of disappointed high school juniors and seniors on the bottom end of the traditional D1 recruiting spectrum for the next year or two as roster sizes adjust.

From the article linked above: "The determining factor is whether or not a school can afford to give scholarships over the maximum."

Any guesses about if anyone or who may be offered an extra scolarship year for Rocket FB and BB? For example in basketball MJ will likely test the draft and possibly be offered another year.... or would that mean pulling a scholarship from a recruit or possibly having an incoming frosh redshirt? I am guessing redshirts would not count towards roster limits? Or, perhaps UT will just say there is no $$ for extra scholarships? Might this lead to go-fund-me pages or targeted donations for keeping seniors around another year ..lol?

That is what a lot of people around the country in athletics are worried about...big donor schools starting "Covid Relief Scholarship Funds" to help get more transfers in at schools.

I guess I keep getting back to the issue of actual cash being spent by the university. Shelling out money is not quite as expensive as it would sound. Room and board along with books would be the biggest cash expense. The tuition is relatively little in terms of cash spent by the universities. It puts a few more bodies in classes spread out over several curriculums. I'm not an expert on government accounting, but when I look at the actual cash expenditures vs. how the cost of scholarships are determined, you are dealing with fund accounting between entities of the university. One benefits from the costs charged to the athletic department for a scholarship, but incurs little in additional cash expenditures. At some point that has to be accounted for in the total operations of the university. I won't get into whether or not around 20% of colleges and universities should just be allowed to go bankrupt and be shut down. Graduates can't find jobs and Congress just passed a bill to increase visas for the tech industry. What the hell is going on?

What’s going on is too many college students getting worthless degrees. The days of “ front loaded” 4 year education are numbered. The elite/wealthy can and always will have the luxury of non career specific four year degrees. The times they are a changing for the vast majority of Americans. Not next for the worse.

Go Rockets!
