RE: Kent State vs .#15 Virginia
I watched the game & was really impressed & encouraged with their effort. Once again, Coach Sendy & staff have assembled a strong & deep group. They were not intimated. In fact, I believe they were the intimidators. Love the confidence.

Strength & conditioning were positives & it showed with the rebounding & transition opportunities.

The progression with the underclassmen is promising. GS is our PG for the next couple of years & will only get better. EB & JH show great upside potential as long as the coaching staff sticks with them. Gaining confidence is a big factor.

TBeck has yet to suit-up & this will be another positive once he is ready to go.

And watching DPII, I always wonder if he had two decent knees, he would be unstoppable.

burden, the underdogs don't always lose the close ones --> Oregon State (twice), UTexass, WVU, the elite 8 run, Villanova (going way back), and so on. Enjoy the ride.

Is something wrong with Davis? Or do you just mean when he adjusts to the college game?

I know the feeling, Burden. I noticed that ages ago. Of course, sometimes the underdogs do win. But, it seems like when a heavy favorite and an underdog are in a tight game with 4 or 5 minutes left, the favorite wins at least 90% of the time. I particularly remember the 1998/1999 season, KSU was in lots of games in which they pulled away from a close game in the last few minutes. Of course, KSU wasn't a true underdog in most of them.

It didn’t help that despite not getting the calls down the stretch, we also weren’t taking quality shots. Other than the buzzer beater, Pippen was just heaving things at the bucket.

Agree, Polish Hammer. Poor shot selection can kill a team down the stretch in a close game.

It felt a little like they were playing like they had nothing to lose, until it got late and they realized they really could win. Probably should be expected from a team with only 2 rotation players from last year, going against the #15 team, in the second game of the season.

Could be that Virginia ratcheted up the effort late too.

Gave up long ago expecting a freshman to be a key ingredient, especially early in the season, for a Kent basketball team ... JWalker was the exception to the rule, his fellow freshman, JAvery didn't emerge until much later.

That said, I've always believed VCD would sadly be judged by his Ohio POY notoriety not his true talent level. Remember, he wasn't very highly recruited. No A10s or CUSA teams went after him. Kent/Toledo were his best offers.

My guess (much like the other Columbus kid that left the team after his sophomore year) is VCD used his size/girth it high school that's neutralized on the college level. The challenge for him/Kent now is to see how much 'skill' he has that will translate, then find a position.

Have 'heard' he's coachable and a gym rat, so there is hope ... but probably not as a freshman.

Personally, would rather see more of EBainbridge and KBennett getting into the rotation that VCD.

I don’t count Villanova or the elite 8 team. They were favored or very slight underdogs. Can’t remember the spread in the other ones. You have to admit the Virginia game has happened over and a over again. Anti-zips post pretty much explains why it happens so often.

The "only problem" with VCD is that he has missed a lot of practice time because of not being completely healthy. Without scrimmages, he hasn't had enough of an opportunity to be ready to contribute in a situation like @ Virginia when we were in a dogfight to the final whistle. I expect him to incorporate into the rotation in the near future.

If you hold your breath waiting on K Bennett to get into the rotation you are going to pass out. He's not going to make it. I am not saying he will get run off, but he's never going to be a guy that will get steady min. He is in above his head.

Thanks. Didn't realize he missed time in preseason. Good to know.

That has been my guess for KB, but still hoping for a 10-minute player, which would be a plus in the post since he has proven some ability to score ... no spring/summer/preseason practice time is a killer for both young big guys (EBAINBRIDGE, KB) and freshmen (VCD) and that's the problem in a nutshell.

Beck's return from injury should be a plus ... but starting to wonder about the two juco scorers (TK Smith/JJordan). After two games both have played sparingly, if at all.

Time will tell on all accounts ...

The rotation will change significantly, and then change again. Not saying it is good or bad or in between, but it happens every single year regardless of injuries.

RE: Kent State vs .#15 Virginia
Did anyone notice what OU did to CSU yesterday? Something like a 40-0 run. A team like OU is very dangerous since they return something like 5 or 6 of their rotation players from a year ago. That's rare these days so normally it would give you an edge but in this season where the preseason has been so unusual, teams that have played together are going to be at a big advantage.

I saw that Ohio went on a 40-0 run. I wonder what the biggest run in D1 has been. Can’t be to many more than 40.

In D-1 that's the biggest. CSU supposedly missed 17 straight shots????

The 40-0 run was a Division I record.
