Rice is so rich that it can let students attend for free. If it cared about athletics, it would have more than enough to make the football and basketball programs relevant national players.

As I’ve said before Rice is a University that exists to fuel an endowment rather than an endowment that exists to fund a university. Decisions made accordingly.

And the really sad thing to me about that is that if the endowment doesn't fund a top-notch university in every area, at some point interest in growing that endowment is going to fade.
