Wow. She lived a very hard life medically, some of which was drugs from what I have read. She said she "did a lot of cocaine," and she "was crazy." There was about a year’s span that she "did cocaine that (she) was doing it -– you could say –- more occasionally, on the weekend. Then my weekend became a three-day weekend, then it became four, then it became five.”--Kirstie Alley

Kinda young for her, but that will take years off your life and apparently it did. She was funny and a great actress. Sad for her kids. R.I.P.

That's too bad. Although, his approach didn't work out at Rice you have to give him credit for his success at Penn.

It's interesting to note that from his staff at Rice there emerged several head coaches, some more successful than others:

- Tyrone Willingham (Stanford, Notre Dame, Washington)
- Craig Bohl (North Dakota State, Wyoming)
- Curt Cignetti (IUP, Elon and James Madison)
- Scott Wachenheim (VMI)

In my opinion, he also hired one of the best defensive coordinators in the game, Milan Vooletich, who came to us from Michigan. I loved playing in his scheme. He left Rice after one year leaving us for Navy.

Graduated from Penn in 1982 and have been a Rice fan from age of 9 or so in the late 60's. Nothing was more pathetic than going from watching SWC FB to the Ivies, particularly Penn, which won 4 games in my 4 years. Stratford's 78 state champs (Craig James and more) would have slaughtered those Quaker teams. Berndt really turned the corner restoring Penn to powerhouse status (well in the Ivies). I was very enthusiastic about him becoming Rice's head coach, but geesh what a disaster. Did Jerry recruit Trevor Cobb, man he was awesome? Never understood why he never made it in the pros-anybody have some analysis?

But Bloom may be worse at least in who we are playing now. But when it was clear he was working out, at least someone pulled the trigger and brought in Fred who had some nice teams and almost got over the mountain.

Trivia question-What other Rice FB coach was hired from Penn? Hint-he was also pretty much a disaster. And a very famous name.

That's sad to hear. He was the AD (and FB coach) when I was hired at Rice, although I honestly didn't deal with him very much. He's the first Rice head coach to pass away in about 20 years (since Bo Hagan in 2002). Homer Rice is still alive (95), as are Al Conover and Ray Alborn (who were also born in 1938, along with Berndt)

No. Trevor was part of Fred Goldsmith's first recruiting class.

Looking at old newspapers, I see that Berndt announced his move to Temple on Dec. 30, 1988. Rice hired Goldsmith (Hatfield's DC at Arkansas) on Jan 17, 1989 ... and his first 22 Rice recruits, including Cobb (a 1989 graduate of Pasadena Dobie), was announced on Feb. 9.

So the pirate is dead. Always have been fascinated by that guy. Brilliant coach.

In the back of my mind, once or twice the thought approached me that geewhiz wouldn’t it be great if this guy could coach at Rice. Then the thought would follow, no he wouldn’t be a good fit. Then another thought: or maybe he just might be a really good fit.

I always love the term 'saxophonist for a New Wave band'.

Ranks up there with 'Cellist for the hard rock band', or 'Electric guitar player for the string quartet'
