Exclamation COVID-Related Bowl Cancellations
This is the first bowl game I've seen cancelled due to COVID.

Quote:The Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl, which has been played every year since its inception in 1935, has been canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic, sources confirmed to ESPN on Tuesday.
https://www.espn.com/college-football/st...first-1935

Edit: Apparently there have been 9 so far.
Quote:The Sun Bowl is the ninth bowl game canceled because of COVID-19; the Bahamas, Celebration, Fenway, Hawaii, Holiday, Motor City, Pinstripe and Redbox bowls are the others.

The Sun Bowl pits teams from the ACC and Pac-12. The ACC has now lost four bowl games that it had tie-ins with (Fenway, Holiday, Pinstripe and Sun); the Pac-12 has lost three (Holiday, Redbox and Sun).

RE: COVID-Related Bowl Cancellations
.
PERSPECTIVE: Coronavirus Patients from Mexico Crossing Border and Straining U.S. Hospitals

Pieced together over a six-month period, isolated accounts like this from hospital administrators, local officials, and federal officials in all of the border states reveal an unknown but significant northward coronavirus patient migration that has gone neither recognized nor considered for policy responses to contain it. In a nutshell, here is what is happening in U.S. states that border Mexico.

Mexicans sick with the virus have overrun hospitals in their own cities south of the border since at least May 2020 to the point that Mexican facilities were unable to care for new patients. Left with no care on the Mexico side, unknown but significant numbers of COVID-sick patients with green cards, dual citizenship, or border-crossing passes have exploited legal loopholes in President Trump’s March 2020 emergency closure so they can reach U.S. hospitals. Other ill crossers are American expatriates, while some were Mexican patients who illegally cross outside of the ports of entry.

At issue – in the general national failure to recognize this contribution to the U.S. hospital crisis – is whether American policy-makers have ever considered it in implementing lockdowns, social-distancing requirements, and other local U.S. policies intended to preserve hospital systems in hard-hit border states like Texas. In ordering measures that would only control local spread that occurred inside the United States – policies that could not, of course, influence behaviors inside Mexico – U.S. leaders are at risk of repeating a potentially consequential public health mistake that occurred during the summer.

RE: COVID-Related Bowl Cancellations
The Sun Bowl and Holiday Bowl are both old / traditional bowls. The rest are the recent ESPN bowls.

If you've noticed the reports coming from El Paso, you can see why they would cancel the bowl, with it being such a hotspot.

If a tree fell in the woods and no one was around to hear.......

Why cancel bowls that don't typically have people at the game anyway? lol They're already covid ready!

We are seeing the same issue on a local level here in Shelby County. People in neighboring counties where covid restrictions are less are coming to Shelby County and straining hospitals. It is why Republicans and Democrats in leadership positions in thhe county are begging TN's governor to implement a state wide mask mandate.

RE: COVID-Related Bowl Cancellations
I hope everyone understands that the Independence Bowl was cancelled for the sole reason that PAC12 teams considered themselves to be above Army and refused to play them.

That's the way I read that as well. Also, none of them wanted to be destroyed by a 9-2 Army. Being independent didn't help Army either...

RE: COVID-Related Bowl Cancellations
A lot of the cancellations have to do with P5 teams deciding not to play.
It's what I suggested a month ago might happen, and as a reason why Memphis might get to play in the Liberty.
But of course, the LB just sells themselves out to loser dredges from P5 conferences.

RE: COVID-Related Bowl Cancellations
Memphis fans should never attend another Liberty Bowl game. Don't support the org that has refused support for the university so many years. Heck, the last time I looked in the airport lobby (earlier this year), they hadn't even updated the replica trophy to recognize our participation from 2017. I guess Ehrhart is so busy working on that one game a year (for his big fat salary) that he doesn't have time to take care of things like updating trophies.

Just give the money directly to St. Jude instead.
