Almost certainly scholarship money.
We should already have the scholarship money budgeted as we already know we are fully funded. Yes, I recognize that they are not endowed, but we are giving out the scholarships whether we got that money or not. In my mind a decent portion of those funds should be given to LaPorte and her staff.
Fact is; two seasons ago there were players sharing scholarships, I believe I recall there was at least one at the time that was walk-on. Money in the softball program was very thin. I don't know anything about the past two seasons.
Yes, there are scholarship limitations set by the NCAA for softball, but JMU gives out the full number which I believe is 12. Those 12 scholarships may be split any way JMU wants over the entirety of the team. I have no idea how they are split, but there is no doubt that multiple starters on this team were not on full scholarship this past year. Out of the 20+ players on the team there are a number of them that are walk-on's as well. This is true at JMU and it is true at Oklahoma as well. OU could certainly afford to give everyone a scholly but it is not allowed.

Well that's how it works everywhere, softball gets 12 scholarships to divide among the roster that's generally around 20-25 players. Was JMU not giving out the full 12?

JMU says they full fund every sport to maximum allowable scholarships, so I'd be shocked if we weren't providing 12.

JMU gave out the full number of scholarships allowed. Ram just didn’t understand how scholarships are limited in softball by the NCAA.
The extra $$$ raised could be used for travel, scouting, coaching bonuses…just about anything other than extra scholarships.

You are correct, I understood players were sharing scholarships because of lack of JMU funding not because of the NCAA rule. Sorry and thanks for the clarification.
to add; It's BS that softball gets 12 scholarships and a roster of say 24 where MBB gets 13 scholarships and a roster of 16. Football is what 63 scholarships with a roster of maybe 80?

RE: 2021 Dukes Softball
It is about controlling costs, revenue generating sports and title IX:
The average FCS Roster size is 108 with 63 Scholarships available
The average DI WBB roster size is 14 with 15 Scholarships available (teach your young daughters to dribble and shoot)
The average DI MBB roster size is 16 with 13 Scholarships available
The average DI Baseball roster size is 36 with 11.7 Scholarships available (JMU had 40 this year on the Roster and many schools have more pitchers on the roster than scholarships available)
The average DI Softball roster size is 22 with 12 Scholarships available (You don't need as big of a roster due to less need for number of pitchers)
Men's golf 4.5 Scholarships and Women 6. (Roster sizes average 8-10)
Men's Soccer 9.9 and Women 14 (Roster sizes average 28-29)

FCS FB can have the maximum of 63 full scholarships, but those 63 may be divided to support up to 85 players.
FBS football can offer a maximum of 85 scholarships, but all 85 are full scholarships.
I believe there is a maximum number of players that may be part of a D1 team’s roster, and suit out and participate with both FBS and FCS FB teams. Last I checked that number is 125. That doesn’t mean a team will carry 125 players, or actually dress and/or play the non-scholarship players. JMU has typically carried a roster of between 100-105.

You convientantly skipped over WBB gets 15 but MBB gets 13. Softball gets 12 Baseball gets 11.7 Golf Men 4.5 Women 6. While I don't have a clue as to the reasons they come up with the limits, but they do have justifications and more than likely coaches, ADs, and presidents had as much to do with setting limits as do the NCAA acting without advice. I'm sure heavy consideration is given to the money generated by each sport.

I would think its a combination of revenue and trying to balance things against football (title IX) while controlling overall costs.
Quite a few FBS schools in the G5 spend less than we do on athletics and have 85 football schollies if fully funded.

Yep. In fact, most G5 total athletic budgets are less than JMU and many are way less. Yet we are to believe that JMU can’t afford to play FBS football.
JMU spends more than all 36 athletic departments in the Sun Belt, MAC, and CUSA. They spend more than 9 of the 12 athletic departments in the Mountain West. They spend more than 2 of the 11 athletic departments in the AAC.
All of this while playing FCS cost containment football. It makes no sense for anyone that prioritizes maximum competition in athletics. JMU wants to compete against the best in 16 sports and not compete against the best in the one sport that has more importance. Until Alger is gone I do not expect any savvy moves in Athletics that would get JMU to where they should be already.
Budget for year ending June 2020 was $58.2 million.

Well said. I agree one million percent. I am beyond sick of the excuses, especially the "we can't afford it" excuse.

I know a guy who’s daughter is a D1 softball prospect and recently won an award in Northern NJ. He mentioned that JMU recently watched her play. This got me thinking I believe JMU is the best softball program in the Northeast/Mid Atlantic. I know there aren’t a ton of softball players north of Maryland but for anyone who is JMU should have a huge edge. Umass used to be good. Hofstra is solid but none are at the level of JMU and the current conference footprint even lets the Northeast softball players family drive to all of their road conference games.

Based on 2021, that's absolutely true. However, the most important thing that happened is that JMU made a HUGE statement that the softball world cannot overlook or miss. We may not have won the whole thing, but we gained notoriety for all the right reasons.
We are becoming a name in softball and that can only be a good thing for recruits. Some may still go to other schools for their P5 status, but it's going to be harder for a great recruit to turn down JMU seeing as we have shown we belong with the elites.

Been quite swamped at work lately, but have meant to post this for some time in conclusion to this year.
Odicci was amazing, classy, talented, and was as mentally tough as any JMU athlete through the playoff run......
But - I don't think the other members of the team have received the credit and attention they earned.
Could not of done it without Odicci, but also could not of done it without the clutch hits, the stellar fielding, the team leaders. I could obviously single out the next 3 or 4 players, but they all played as a team and were all pieces to the puzzle much like the 2004 football team. Things needed to fall in place, and everyone, and every play was needed.
Odicci was the face of the run, but there were a lot of other key players that stepped up so we could advance as far as we advanced.
Awesome TEAM

100% agree. CC deserves a ton of credit, but so does the entire team and coaching staff. Some of the things you see people say about CC dragging JMU to the semifinals of the CWS are great for seeing CC get recognition but also feel pretty off the mark on how good the rest of the team around her was.

Softball twitter gets verified. There should be a push to have every varsity sport twitter account at JMU verified. I think there are some minimum requirements but believe it or not it matters to students and recruits. Gives an extra sense of credibility when you look up a team.

This is really correct. Then again, to have one star in CC that is so nationally recognized is also pretty cool. If CC's performance were split among 4 starting pitchers, I doubt we'd be much more than "oh that plucky team who did well in a sport that ESPN would rather not bother with."
