I really hope this doesn't happen. If he realyl wants a party deck I hope they could incorporate it into some stands, whether its under ala the SEZ, in the middle, or on top. having a flat party deck there is a big mistake IMO

Yes Party deck with a stage to conduct events, concerts, etc with stands / seat above the party deck and to put the scoreboard above that. It is a fantastic idea to complete that end of the field and open up the possibility of non football season use.

It really isn't a fantastic idea. The aesthetic of that sounds awful. It screams early soccer-specific stadium model that MLS was in love with until they realized they were awful. The only one left is in Frisco, TX. If they must do a standing area and seating at the south end they need to copy the New Belgium Porch at Colorado State but on a bigger scale. Put some seats and the scoreboard over that and you are on to something.

A party deck with a small stage, standing room, vendors and bathrooms on the lower level with a few thousand seats and scoreboard above it sounds good to me. Provides a fun atmosphere, more entertainment options, flexibility for using the space, height to keep the sound in, better positioning and size options for the scoreboard. If it fills in the corners too, I like the sound of it.
It would also take approximately 20% of the current seating. How would that sit with those who say Foreman Field is still too small?

We aren't selling out any more as it is. But the stadium would look larger with the corners filled in and the scoreboard high in the air. It would be louder too. Then, once we actually need the extra seats go to phase three which is hopefully another deck on the east side and hopefully suites on top of the press box. That should get us close to 28-30k. Unless we get to P5 status, I think that would be enough seats to last a long time.

I think something like the end zone on this would be awesome. I still think we should look into putting an academic building with classrooms and maybe athlete tutoring space etc behind the end zone and use just the top floor on the south side of it for suites. Then attach stadium seating and a deck to the outside and put the scoreboard on the roof. Most of the infrastructure could be paid without athletic funds then.

That is the good end in Frisco. The other end is brutal and what I’m terrified will happen here.

Whoa. That is pretty bad. Agreed. Don’t want that. But the “good end” as you called it, is pretty nice.

RE: ODU Master Plan
When it was described to me, the first comparison I thought of was the New Belgium party deck at Colorado State. But add in Audi Fields Heineken Club to get the complete picture.

SRO/party deck with tiered levels connected to a mixed-use building (they had a tenant at one point that fell through) with some seating and maybe another club area.

I will add the continued mismanagement of Portsmouth Pavilion offers a lot of potential for the stadium to be used for concerts, which would make future renovations even likelier.

That makes me feel much better. I'm not terribly thrilled about The Steve becoming a concert venue but if some concerts can finance a new south endzone and possible future stadium renovations and athletic department upgrades I suddenly become much less concerned about the turf.

I thought the school made a deal with Larchmont to avoid concerts there. Maybe it’s only at night or it never materialized. But I do recall that being discussed. I do like The plan the way Drunkard has described it. Hope we see it happen in the next few years.

So my son recently attended ODU orientation and they polled the students attending if they were living on or off campus. To my surprise, 65% are living on campus!

That’s not bad at all at this point. Those are the students that will be more likely to be engaged in student life, build a love for the school and give back later. Though I do wonder how many commuters attend orientation at all.

It’s a requirement now because immediately after orientation you register for classes on the same day.

RE: ODU Master Plan
The ODU Real Estate Foundation has applied for a zoning change for the lot between 39th and 41st and Monarch Way and Hampton. They’ve also applied for a right of way vacation for a portion of 40th street. This is the lot next to the new Health Sciences building. The stated purpose of this zoning change is to build a mixed use development to include a grocery store, apartments, retail space and a new parking deck.

Cool. Whatever happened to that development with the brewery and all that was going on the west side of Hampton Blvd between campus and the railroad overpass? That looked pretty cool.

It was delayed due to covid, but I was told that the buildout is slated to start in October.

This has some new information. For instance, the school will be housed in the new health sciences building at ODU with plans to open and accredited in 2024;
