Rice makes the final 6 along with USC, Iowa State, Cal, Colorado, and Washington. Obviously would be a massive commitment, however likely or unlikely. You could probably guess but she's from California, which explains the Pac-12 heavy list. It's typically pretty difficult to pry west coasters from the west coast. Though I'd hope it'd be easier to sell her on Houston than Ames, Iowa.

And some fun notes! This means that Grant is recruiting against his wife (USC) and that as a program we're up against Langley, King, Alejandro, and co.

Per this article, her rise came from seemingly nowhere. https://almanacnews.com/news/2021/08/18/...the-making

RE: Ames, Iowa. One of my Rice former roomies went there for a year to teach. He described it as the ******* of the world. I have been there and its not that bad. But I doubt that it is the sort of place that beckons to a West Coast girl.

Wonder if she was being contacted by Rice before the coach change and liked it so much she kept it on her list or if the new crew reached out to her.

I would guess that a decent amount of the west coast contacts come from Grant's time at San Diego State. But it's possible that with both Rice and Washington on her list, there was some contact with Langley & Co. prior to their departure.

Nice commit. 5-11 or 6-0 wing. Rated as the #1 player in Virginia by this site. She's class of 2022 (current HS senior)

RE: [split] Women's Basketball Recruiting Thread 2021
Looks like she took visits to Delaware, Richmond, and Charleston. Also had an offer from, at the very least, George Washington.

So to summarize, that's:

2022: Shelby Hayes, Kennedy Clifton
2023: Pace Rickard

I think that means 1 spot left for the 2022 class and 3 left for the 2023 class (depending on if Swayze and McCurry choose to graduate or take their COVID year).

No we have way more than 1 spot left for 2022. Remember, women get 15 scholarships compared to 13 for the men. We only have 11 players on the current roster. Assuming Stover is the only current Owl who won't return, that's at least 3 more spots (and could be 5 as you say if Swayze and McCurry graduate and no longer play after this year).

This is what happens when you're back in school and reading hundreds of pages a day. My brain immediately went to the 13 number without remembering that the women have 15.

Yes, so 3 spots left for 2022 and 5 for 2023 assuming Swayze and McCurry graduate.

I was impressed by how well Japan's Olympic Women's team did with a relatively small lineup, lots of back door cuts, and plenty of three point shooting. It looked a lot like Pete Carril's Princeton offense.

It took Ladine only 10 days to commit to Washington. They also grabbed a top-35 recruit this past weekend (both on official visits, I think). Suffice it to say that Langley's recruiting prowess is being displayed in full force.

RE: [split] Women's Basketball Recruiting Thread 2021
I don't think I'd alternatively rewrite history and claim Langley has recruiting prowess. I suspect Washington getting Ladine is more of an indication that the recruiting assistant she wrestled away from Oregon State (?) is working her magic already at UW.

One of the biggest knocks on Langley at Rice was that she couldn't close the deal on the top high school recruits (such as Fatou Samb who ended up at Cal). Mulkey and the Ogwumikes were transfers, not high school recruits (as was Iademarco but I think she might have been right before Langley came to Rice?). The only consensus top-100 recruit Langley got at Rice was Sydne Wiggens (maybe Jasmine Smith and 1 or 2 others were top 100 on some list on another, but they weren't consensus top 100).

I don't wish ill will on Langley, but I wouldn't claim she was this amazing recruiter either.

RE: [split] Women's Basketball Recruiting Thread 2021
I'd disagree. If the test for recruiting prowess for mid-major coaches is their ability to land top-100 recruits, there might only be 1 or 2 good recruiters in the mid-major ranks. Yes, Langley didn't get Samb or Hunter or Wenzel. But I would classify those failures as nothing more than Rice not having the same national prominence as power-conference teams.

To me, the best way to assess a coach's recruiting ability is to analyze her offers to recruits that are realistic for the coach's program. In Langley's case at Rice, that essentially means asking how she fared when targeting recruits ranked 100-200. And by all accounts, Langley was superb at landing her targets. She wasn't somebody who dished out 50+ offers in the hopes that two or three committed. She found her players and landed them.

And even if you think the key metric is a coach's ability to land "big fish," then it's not like Langley is bad at that either. Transfers or not, Ogwumike, Mulkey, and Smith/Wiggins (I can't remember which one) were all top-100 talents. And I'd imagine that Schwartz, if rankings were redone, would also have been top-100.

She might not be an *amazing* recruiter, and Faulkner (the coach from Oregon State) is no doubt helping, but I'd wager a good sum that Langley is a top 25 coach in the country at building relationships with players.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree then. Yes, Langley is great at building relationships with players. But that only helps on retention, and not on getting them to Rice to begin with.

I suspect Langley ultimately left Rice because she was frustrated on not being able to close the deal on her top choices.

FBO, she's done an amazing job at Washington in a relatively short period of time. Contrast that with what Edmond's be able to do on the recruiting trail. Langley not only got UW's two best players to take their name of the transfer portal and "stole" our two best players, but she also got two other coveted transfers to join this year's team...and she's already secured elite recruiters for the class of '22.

I certainly agree that she missed out on most of her top targets (not including transfers), but I suspect doubling her salary w the draw of a P% conference and all that brings with it, were major factors.

Sounds like the women got a commitment today. I'd have to guess it's Galbraith. Recently offered, recently visited. Coaches liking a lot of tweets about her.
