Are you allowed to disclose anything more about the scrimmage? Not score or stats or anything - more like general impressions (about system or players).

Probably not, but I think it's okay to say that we only played 7 players (we didn't play the freshman walk-on, and then our three most experienced returning players didn't play). But I really get the sense that all three (Crossthwaite, Swayze and McCurry) will be good to go in the opener next week. Crossthwaite suited up - the other two did not but were in warm-ups and didn't look to be dealing with major injuries?

We seem to be pushing an up-tempo offense and an aggressive defense too, although we were a little gassed at the end of the game.

I really don't think I should say any more. If we can stay healthy, we'll be competitive in most of our games. Pray for good health.

Not sure what McCurry's injury is, but Crosthwait had a back issue (though she did participate in a couple shooting drills when I saw a practice a couple weeks back). Swayze is still nursing an ankle injury, but she expected to be back soon.

From what I've seen and read, Edmonds preaches an extremely up tempo offense (ala Pera) vs. half court offense which we deployed more frequently with Mulkey in the mix. The issue is whether we have the rebounders and ball handlers to make such a style of play effective. The defensive drills I saw appeared to indicate a much more aggressive, in your face style of play. However, with only 9 or 10 players on the roster, and probably a 7 - 8 person rotation, that is extremely risky from a foul trouble standpoint.

Honestly, the more I hear about her preferred offensive and defensive styles, the more confused I am about why she didn't add 2-3 more senior bodies in the transfer portal. Wouldn't have jeopardized our future scholarships and would be much easier to play aggressively when you can sub more liberally.

I also agree with you, Walt. I'm really not sure who the ball handlers are for an uptempo offense. I guess it's possible that Crosthwaite has been getting reps at the 1, but apart from her, it's basically just Destiny Jackson who at least in her first two years wasn't really a true handler.

I think our Freshman duo of Fisher and Gooden are our best ball handlers. Also, as I said in a post after that Assist Club practice, I thought Austin was the best player on the court. She's improved a ton.

Just saw this tweet from WBB - seems Dominique Ennis from Kings Christian collegiate (Canada) has committed even though she hasn't announced it on her media. Appears she may be the sister of Dylan Ennis (also from Canada and has a sister named Dominique who plays BB).

Great pick-up. Always loved Dylan Ennis, even if Rice was only his first stop (later Villanova and Oregon). Tyler Ennis played a bit for the Rockets. I see there is another sister named Makayla who played her first two years at Virginia Tech, but has since transferred (to Hofstra?).

Anyway, looking at her video, she looks to have a great looking shot.

I've heard they love their recruiting class (which may be announced later today?).

But I believe it's Shelby Hayes, 6-2, P (Cedar Park)
Kennedy Clifton, 5-11 F/G (Alexandria, VA - Bishop Ireton)
Hailey Adams, 6-0 G (San Antonio Clark)
Jazzy Owens-Barnett, 5-7 G (Plano Liberty)

Signing day is a week from tomorrow (November 10)

So those four plus Dominique Ennis (5-7 G, Brampton, Ontario - King's Christian)

If we keep all 10 current scholarship players, that's a full 15 on scholarship for 2022-23.

One service rates the class #1 in CUSA and 32nd nationally

Well, Edmonds got the #1 class in CUSA and #32 in the country. Great job by the coaching staff. I only wish they had focused just a wee bit on this year's transfer pool while going after the next two incoming classes...

RE: [split] Women's Basketball Recruiting Thread 2021
As sort of an unofficial Rice athletics historian, I'm trying to remember if Rice has ever both a male and female family member both play basketball. I really don't recall that ever happening. Back in the 1990's, we had an amazing brother-sister combination of Emmett Waldron and Sammy Waldron, but that was football and volleyball.

Obviously, we've had tons of siblings all attend Rice on athletic scholarships, but usually from the same sex (such as the current Forbes sisters all in track and field/cross country).

The only other brother-sister combination I can recall was Omar Mance in basketball (now the head coach at Trevecca Nazarene) transferring to Rice from LSU, and then later his younger sister was a student at Rice (but not an athlete). I'm probably missing somebody?

She was not able to land non-transfer recruits that highly rated while at Rice. No doubt her now-proven track record, and P5 affiliation helped her over the hurdle

According to MaxPreps, Cedar Park in #1 in 5A and #2 overall in Texas.

Jazzy Owens-Barnett and Frisco Liberty are 22-4 and ranked right behind Cedar Park at #2 in 5A and #7 overall, according to MaxPreps.

Hailey Adams and San Antonio Clark are 21-2 and in MaxPreps, ranked #3 in 6A and #4 overall.

Obviously not a bad thing-but unsure how meaningful it is as there are/were several hundred nominees.
