NY Times: Some College Cheerleaders making good money ....
Because cheerleading is not governed by the NCAA, some college cheerleaders are making good money by featuring themselves on social media like Instagram.

I read recently that Gabi Butler, a cheerleader who was featured on a Netflix cheerleading show last year, is worth over $10 million.

RE: NY Times: Some College Cheerleaders making good money ....
I have always been leery of the notion of college athletes going from students to employees. For that reason, I don't tend to go for the traditional notion of pay for play.

With that said, there is no reason an athlete shouldn't be able to capitalize on their image or likeness. Let the market decide what they're worth. Absolutely no need for the NCAA to be involved in that.

Additionally, if an athlete wants to get a job/endorsement deal outside of school and some donor is willing to pay them a large amount of money then I frankly don't care. Again, let the market decide what they're worth.

I would also allow the athletes to reap more rewards in terms of benefits...insurance, room and board, continuing education after they go pro or leave school.

If donors or alumni want to help a kid get a job then I don't know what's wrong with that either. Most of these guys will never make big money in the NFL assuming they go pro at all.

The only thing that bothers me actually is a straight check from the school to the player. I think there's a lot of potential issues there as far as upending the dynamic of team first when it comes to athletics. There also comes a disincentive to provide educational benefits and as I said, most of these guys won't make a lot of money in the NFL. They need the degree and they need the connections.

I'm guessing this article isn't about male cheerleaders.

Some of you youngsters need to Google Becca Manns Louisville Cheerleader. 13 years ago a cheerleader at UofL let her boyfriend take some “inappropriate pictures”. Somehow the pictures made it to the ‘net and the young lady lost her scholarship.

The pictures are not safe for work.

In the same bucket as other social media personalities.

Its about capitalizing on something that can be tapped into. E-sports I suppose you can become fanatical about that.

One of the interesting things is you don't have to be at a generally well-known college to strike it rich. E.g., Butler cheered for Navarro College, a junior college governed by the NJCAA. It is a cheerleading power but the public has never heard of it.

Nevertheless, it provides the platform for her to have more than a million Instagram followers.

The most privileged people on this planet are attractive women. Play their cards right and they can be millionaires easily.

My wife is a good-looking girl and always has been. I remember when we met, we traded stories about being 18-19 years old and looking for work during 1982-1983 while we were college students, when unemployment was 11%, worst since the great depression, and worse for more months than the 2008 and this year's covid job markets have been. In my lifetime, the late-1981 to mid-1983 job market was just the worst ever. The recession was deep and structural, not caused by a passing "shock" like the mortgage collapse of 2008 or this year's pandemic.

Me? I talked about how I "pounded the pavement" for countless hours and filed dozens and dozens of applications at all sorts of places before I could find a job, and then I got laid off within a couple of weeks.

My wife? She was never unemployed - just about every place she applied, whether it be office secretarial work or department store retail or hostessing at restaurants - she was hired on the spot. Moved easily from job to job during that time with no problems.

Why? Horny older men were doing the hiring, LOL.

No doubt about that. Nobody gets farther on less effort.

The daughters of a girl I dated in high school are social media celebrities. They have no skills- they can’t act, dance or sing. They just looked good and posted clips of them being silly (in the right attire). 40M views later they have parlayed into appearances on TV shows, a clothing and makeup line, etc.

I don’t begrudge them, I would do the same thing if I could. If we are being honest it’s us guys who are at fault for rewarding all of this

Oh no doubt. I hate social media influencers. But at the same time, if I could make my money posing for pictures on Instagram, I’d do it in a heartbeat. Who wants their Monday-thru-Friday engulfed by a real job with no freetime? Wake up early, and by the time you get home and eat dinner, the day’s almost over.

Didn't some of the Coastal Carolina girls find a way to make money of cheering?
