So we've got basically 3 left from MTM - Betty White (she just turned 99), Ed Asner (91) and Gavin McLeod (he turns 90 next month). A few others too but those are the main ones remaining.

Didn't remember Valerie Harper being gone (2019).

Cancer got Valerie Harper. She fought it openly and valiantly.

John Amos as the weatherman Gordy Howard. He was doing double duty with MTMS and Good Times.

Joyce Bulifant as Marie Slaughter is another who is still alive. Her and John are mostly recurring characters who are still important on the show.

Julie Kavner is still alive as Brenda who was Rhoda's sister on the MTMS which she appeared on MTMS. Now, she is a voice actress for Bart Simpson.

David Groh played Joe Gerard on Rhoda who is Her boyfriend.

Ray Buktenica played Benny Goodwin on Rhoda.

John Lawlor on Phyllis is still alive.
Lisa Gerritsen played Bess Lindstrom on both MTMS and Phyllis. Lisa played Cloris's daughter on both MTMS and Phyllis.
Garn Stephens, Liz Torres are still alive. That is 9 actors that are still alive from the spinoffs of MTMS with the characters that appeared on the main show.

Back on January 13, 2021, New York Dolls Guitarist Sylvain Sylvain Dead at 69

Quote:Sylvain Sylvain, the punk icon and guitarist for New York Dolls whose riffs bridged the gap between punk and glam, died Wednesday. He was 69. His wife, Wanda O’Kelley Mizrahi, confirmed the musician’s death.

The group’s self-titled 1973 debut album remains a landmark in rock music, with Rolling Stone naming it to the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list. “Glammed-out punkers the New York Dolls snatched riffs from Chuck Berry and Fats Domino and fattened them with loads of attitude and reverb,” we wrote at the time. “Produced by Todd Rundgren, songs like ‘Personality Crisis’ and ‘Bad Girl’ drip with sleaze and style.… It’s hard to imagine the Ramones or the Replacements or a thousand other trash-junky bands without them.”

The androgynous, proto-punk group channeled their love of the Rolling Stones, David Bowie, MC5, and the Stooges into hard-driving rock songs with a pop sheen, wearing flamboyant outfits and makeup that would set the fashion template for a generation of kids from Manhattan and beyond.

His character is one of those that are annoying but loved anyways. Screech is in the same ball park as Urkel from Family Matters.

Jim Weatherly (March 17, 1943 – February 3, 2021) was an American singer-songwriter that wrote mostly pop and country music. He played quarterback at the University of Mississippi, while also writing music with his own bands. He subsequently chose songwriting over a football career.

Good choice, Jim!

Jim Weatherly, Pontotoc native and Hall of Fame songwriter, dies

Weatherly wrote songs for almost 50 years. His best-known song is "Midnight Train to Georgia", recorded by Gladys Knight & the Pips. It peaked to number 1 on the pop and R&B charts, and went on to win a Grammy Award. The song was subsequently inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999, and was chosen by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Recording Industry Association of America as No. 29 of the 365 Songs of the Century. Ray Price has recorded 38 of Weatherly's songs. Both Gladys Knight & the Pips (in 1972) and Bob Luman (in 1973) had top five records with "Neither One of Us". Other artists who have recorded Weatherly's songs include: Glen Campbell, Kenny Rogers, Asha Puthli, Neil Diamond, Kenny Chesney and Garth Brooks.

Gladys Knight and the Pips have recorded twelve other Weatherly compositions, such as "Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye)" and "Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me". That version of "Neither One of Us" became his first number one pop record in Cashbox and Record World magazine charts, and became a number one R&B record. It was followed by "Where Peaceful Waters Flow"," Midnight Train to Georgia" and "Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me", which were all pop and R&B hits. Weatherly's catalog includes songs that have been performed by Ray Price, Lynn Anderson, Brenda Lee, Bob Luman, and Batdorf & Rodney.

I used a wikipedia story I read on Weatherly to come up with a good trivia question for a contest I ran a couple of years ago. Did you know that the original name of the Midnight Train to Georgia song was actually Midnight Plane to Houston? And that title came from a phone conversation Weatherly had with a young Farrah Fawcett.

Weatherly was calling his friend Lee Majors and ended up talking to his then-girlfriend Farrah Fawcett instead. She mentioned she was taking a midnight plane back home to Houston to see her parents, and he thought it was a good phrase and possible song idea. He originally recorded a song with that title, and then Cissy Houston took the song and changed the title to Midnight Train to Georgia before Gladys Knight and the Pips redid it and it became a massive hit.

That's in the same category of the Beatles "Hey Jude" which was written for Lennon's son Julian and originally started "Hey Jules". It's hard to imagine "Hey Jules" being as successful as "Hey Jude" but a lot harder to imagine "Midnight Plane to Houston" becoming as iconic as "Midnight Train to Georgia". Besides what would the Pips have done for body motions in the song? You would have lost the chugging motion and the "Woo, woo" for flapping wings and "Whoosh, whoosh!" I just can't see it happening. Plus I have to admit I drop what I'm doing to listen to that rendition by Gladys Knight and Pips every time I hear it. It is truly iconic and always lovely to listen too if I can keep myself from trying to sing along.

Yes, I did also get the Midnight Plane to Houston question right at a Trivia Night. Good job. Those kind of answers are fun to get. As an aside, I took many a Midnight Plane back to and from Houston for the holidays as they were cheaper, at least out of Intercontinental. IO recall the lasagna wasn't cooked well for the airtravel crowd, though.

That song also reminds me of "The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia" by Carol Burnett Show alum (and Mama of "Mama's Family" fame) Vicki Lawrence, when she was a young pup.

Christopher Plummer dead at 91. He was a great actor who appeared in a ton of stuff through the years, but he was best remembered as Captain Von Trapp in The Sound of Music.

So long, farewell....

Yes, but he was also the head of P.A.G.A.N. (Persons Against Goodness And Normalcy)!

Dragnet (The Movie)

But he showed great versatility being able to move from the Austrian Folk Dance called the Lindler to the Goat Dance of P.A.G.A.N.!
