Welcome, Gal.
Hey, you know you were doing something right, or whoever that other Gal is wouldn't have taken your name.
Maybe the children won't follow over here, but we do have an ignore button here. 04-cheers

Ok. I've got one stupid question. I know, I know  there are only stupid answers, but how does the ignore button work and can it be abused?

Thanks

As I understand it, all you have to do is click on "ignore" below any posters name (the name that appears beside any of their posts) and you will no longer see any posts made by that poster........thereby eliminating their ability to ruin a thread or get on your nerves in general. Therby eliminating THEIR fun in destorying a sports forum........and probably discouraging many from even starting any stuff in the first place. Fortunately, I haven't had any need to use it yet.......and I hope I don't. But it's nice to know it's there, ain't it? 04-cheers

Galactus,

I didn't know what had become of you. I've missed you, dear friend. I don't blame you for leaving AST; but Lord, I hate to see that board fade away. Anyhow, good to renew old acquaintance with you. :)

Me too.

Two things regarding your comments:

1) I think people thought I was repeating myself in many cases because they always took everything as a comment directed at THEM and THEM alone. Many times I was addressing someone else who had asked a legitimate question. Yeah, in many cases my answer was a repeat of what I've said before.......but then again, USC's history doesn't change. And Tay was the only guy I repeated the baseball stuff with........but that was just plain weird.

2) But here's the big point: Recently (and this is one of the things that convinced me to just leave AST) I got into a discussion on a comic book board about how fellow posters on a forum are often misjudged......thanks to the shortcomings of the internet, where you can't hear the tone of a post (winkies only do so much). But what had happened was the moderator of that forum had posted a question........"Am I condescending"? He had been called such and was concerned.........Most of us liked this moderator (he's a famous cartoonist and full of knowledge).

We basically came to the conclusion that many people take knowledge and well-thought out posts wrongly.......and are somehow twisting this in their heads to come out that a particular poster is "condescending" or "arrogant".......even when he's just sharing information. There's a certain insecurity in some posters when they see knowledgable posts, we concluded, that forces them to fight their shaky feelings by lashing out and shifting the focus. Plus, people generally don't like those individuals who have strong opinions and don't stray from them.

As you know, I' believe history is firmly tied in with the present. Many USC fans don't want to hear that because our history sucks so bad.........but really, no one can deny that it doesn't play a huge role.......especially in recruiting and in media perception.

As for college baseball, I believe and I always will......that the only reason USC fans hold the sport in such high regard is because we've stunk more often than not in football and basketball. I know there are some genuine college baseball fans out there and I say "good for them." But for the most part, this unusual support of college baseball reeks of desperation.......and it's kind of embarassing (particularly when you work with folks from other areas who think it's "cute" and "funny.").

This is all just speculation and personal opinion on my part, of course. I've been following USC a long, long time, though.........and those are the kinds of things that run through my head.

BTW......are you "Rob DeBoard"?

Gotta see the answer to this.

I have a question for you, Gal. Did you at one time get so fed up with some Clemson posters that you took another name and try flaming on the Tiger side? I know some of us thought it was you because whoever it was didn't have it in them to flame. I know I thought it was you because I knew you were not a flamer and you were catching a hard time from some.
If that was you, I can understand why you did it, I've felt like doing it myself at times. I never did it because I know people would figure out it was me, but, believe me, I have considered it.

No, I'm not Rob. He's much too witty for me. For the longest time I thought he was Boston Gamecock, but Rob's made a couple of comments about himself that tell me otherwise.

I've only done the dual handle thing once, & that was for about a day during this recent foolishness. After about a day I realized that it was stupid, & doing more harm than good.

No, that wasn't me. 05-nono I don't do that sort of stuff. Actually......I'm not even aware of what poster you're talking about, because over the last couple of years I never even ventured to that side of the board!

I've never, not once, taken a different handle. I've always been Galactus and always will be........it's my little tribute to my all-time favorite comic book artist and creator.......so I'll never sway from that. Plus, it just isn't my style to take another handle......I just think it's stupid. I don't play games.......either you want to discuss sports intelligently or you don't, the way I look at it. In addition to that, I only post from two places.....home and work. So I'd run out of e-mail addresses pretty quickly.

As to people's attitudes towards me........I don't care much, but I really don't get it. But I think some of it does go back to what I was saying above.......

I ventured over to CSF at first, but it didn't take me long to see where it was going. Not much sports talk, & a lot of garbage.

I think I got kicked off. I remember calling ATWC out for his countless attacks on Keven Cohen even though he said he wasn't going to do that, & for questioning some of his early mod tactics.

Shortly after that I couldn't log on anymore which was fine with me. AST, while much slower, became much more peaceful.

I tried it once, too......but I got frustrated when I couldn't get my avatar to work (which was the one I'm using here, BTW).

I never have understood what all the fuss with ATWC was about. When I first came to AST he seemed very well liked......I've met him and he seems like a nice enough guy........what am I missing? I think they're are a few chapters in AST's history I missed out on, during one of my self-imposed exiles.

DANGER: LONG POST AHEAD!!!!!!!

A lot of people dislike ATWC, but I don't - I actually keep in contact with him and have even met him for lunch before recently. I don't get caught up in all that (AST BS) and could really care less what others think about him. As far as I know, he feels the same way. He and I work only about 15 minutes away from each other and try to at least communicate by e-mail or phone every week. I get a bunch of Clemson information from his perspective plus politics, family stuff, religion, etc. and I think he appreciates hearing the USC perspective, and other junk from me. I have only recently gotten to befriend a fellow poster and there is a lot that you don't get from just posting on internet boards. Gal touched on this earlier re: tone and winkies, etc.

I have met Mutha, IBcocky, Ivel and Deac once before a year or two ago and I couldn't really tell you much about them besides what they post on the internet (AST). Never been to a football "ranch rally" only because I don't go to many games or family stuff gets in the way - doesn't mean I won't ever go out of my way to meet some of you in the future - just hard these days.

I consider ATWC a friend - some of you consider him an enemy - don't get it - but I can understand a little only because of some of ATWC associations in the past.

Many think ATWC and I were the "owners" of CSF and likely think we pulled the plug on that site - I will now shed more light on CSF.com - "Michael Cook" was the Administrator of that site. He started the site with other USC students before he graduated from USC. I found myself very married to the site only because Michael invited me to be the moderator of the USC side during the first weeks of operation - it was the first opportunity to do this and I was very excited and found myself very loyal to the task and the website. I learned a lot with this experience and now find myself in this position again. I think the site was a success in the fact that AST posters had a home away from home. At one time, posters were worried that we would have little warning that AST would pull the plug and some eventually met up at CSF in droves (just in case AST went down). When AST proved to last - the posters eventually made CSF return full circle to its empty self. Sure, the Clemson side had ATWC leading them with Dave and the Soap Operas that continue today on AST. The site died officially when I found myself having to navigate on a MAC with little help on a MAJOR problem that only MAC addicts were suffering with. To surf properly in the site, we had to open the page, then scroll at the bottom - it was a major pain. Michael had no clue on how to help us (DeacinSC is another MAC poster that continually addressed this problem openly) - but we trusted that that problem would be fixed. Michael never fixed it. Then Michael - apparently trying to get a job - ignored the board completely and then months or so later - it became nonexistant.

ATWC and I learned a lot from that experience and we are friends today because of AST and CSF.

I hope this is enough info on that...

Almost forgot - Hi Dave

Interesting, raptor. I, for one, would welcome ATWC's presence on this board. After all, for those that wouldn't, there's always the "ignore" funtion.

Like you, I tend to look at other posters as openly as I can. This is how I always felt about Rev. Pressure......who was the target of many attacks when I first signed on at AST. Personally, I've never had a problem with the good Rev.......and as long as that's the case, I have no reason to ignore him just because other posters do so. That's their business......and none of my own. So that's sort of how I look at this ATWC business.......I like talking comics with the guy, after all!!

We really had a good core of posters over at AST at one time. It's a shame........but I'll not return until an "ignore" function is installed over there (at least!).
