Strongly disagree. That job is a place you go to make some dough and get fired after three years because of unrealistic expectations. Yes, Tennessee has a lot of passionate fans and big brand, but that only takes you so far. Penn State, despite all these resources, still has only won their conference a handful of times and hasn’t even sniffed the playoffs. Penn State has an easier road than Tennessee because they have great recruiting grounds and only have to get past one elite tier program in Ohio State. Tennessee has, at minimum, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida every year.

It isn’t impossible to win at Tennessee but times have moved on and they may find themselves forever wandering waiting for the golden days to return like Nebraska. It is essential for a coach to find success that they be given time, support, and flexibility. Tennessee doesn’t offer any of those as you are just as likely to have the AD pull the rug from under you your second year in. Unless I’m looking to cash in or a proud alumnus, I wouldn’t touch that school as coach with a 20 ft pole.

What? Baylor is made by their coaches. Otherwise it’s an impossible situation. You should understand where I’m coming from more than anyone.

Wisconsin is a perennial top-25. Horrible pit of a recruiting state. Tennessee just has bad management.

Tennessee football should be better than it is. Massive fan base, great stadium (on a river and the setting is strong), more and more prep talent in the state, strong history, etc.

In addition, Tennessee has a built-in advantage, as most SEC schools face strong in-state competition for fans and talent from other P5 programs (Auburn and Bama, Florida and FSU/Miami, Georgia and GaTech, Ole Miss and MissState, South Carolina and Clemson, UK and Louisville, Texas A&M and UT, Baylor, Tech). UT has only Vandy, Middle Tennessee (G5) and Memphis (G5) to deal with in-state.

Okay, well that is controllable. Wisconsin is in a horrible recruiting state. Tennessee has the advantage. That was my point.

Wisconsin is a pretty lousy recruiting state but has some big things going for it. When you're down the road from Chicago (the same distance from the Loop as Illinois and Purdue and closer to the wealthy northern suburbs), have zero local college football competition (third largest state without another FBS school and has zero FCS either), are in a Midwestern state with a strong sports culture, and have a great town like Madison to recruit with it helps a lot. If UW were in Stevens Point and had an in-state P5 rival to compete with it'd be a much different situation.

One more coaching change: Lance Leipold leaves Buffalo and takes the toughest coaching job in P5, maybe the toughest in FBS, at Kansas.
