Looks like Skip went into his turtle mode just a little too early yet again - he hates to really try and put a game away...

Good game UNT! Glad Tech could get the win with the huge layoff. Now on to TCU!

North Texas has a great WR. That kid is electric. Hopefully he stays healthy and grabs an NFL roster spot.

Again, congratulations LA Tech. You were certainly the better team once again. We have serious issues at North Texas. Darden (#1) is a great receiver for us. He leads the FBS in touchdowns (15), despite only playing in 8 games this season. He is the lone bright spot in our season.

I have a favor to ask, and I got three +3's for the first LT fan that can get me the right answers....

I'd like to know how many player you had out due to COVID testing?

How many back-ups were starting tonight for LA Tech?

How many starters have opted out at LT this season and who they are?

And, does Holtz consider this to be a rebuilding year at LA Tech?

Rebuilding Year:

This is definitely a rebuilding year for LA Tech. After the 2019 season Tech lost 9 of 11 offensive starters (including 4 of 5 starting offensive linemen), and 6 starters on defense, including 4 DB's, 2 of which were drafted into the NFL (Robertson & Sneed). And of course, love him or hate him, we also lost our 3-yr starting QB J'Mar Smith too.

That was a lot of team leadership to lose in one year.

Just today, Tech's athletic office released a press release announcing that big time recruit and Grayshirt QB Caleb Holstein (6'5, 210) is now eligible and officially on the roster. I think that was announced because we're now officially in our 2nd Quarter of school, so he's eligible. You may recall this is the kid who flipped his commit from Harvard to LA Tech last year. He is one of the most decorated skill players LA Tech has ever recruited, and he is the future. Holstein was the MVP of his State Championship game in 2019, and passed for over 9,100 yards in his high school career. He and a freshman QB from Texas named J.D. Head are both the future for this program, and will likely battle it out for the starting job in the future.

Here's today's press release on Caleb Holstein:

https://latechsports.com/news/2020/12/3/...stein.aspx

Lastly, on special teams our kicker is brand new and so is our punter, though I still don't have a lot of confidence in him.

NFL Wannabees:

Here's the three I know of:

WR Adrian Hardy, Starting RT and LSU Transfer Donavaughn Campbell (6'5, 360) and All CUSA RB Justin Henderson are the 3 LA Tech players that have "opted out early" for the NFL draft. All three were starters for us. Of the three, losing Hardy probably hurt the most. He's really good, and caught 75 passes for 1,145 yds as a sophomore in 2018.

Backups:

I don't know how many "backups" we played tonight, but we played a ton of freshmen tonight, and we have all season. I laugh when I read about some of the other schools bragging about how "young" they are when we're already playing a ton of freshman. Our best player on defense is #52 Tyler Grubbs, and he's a true freshman. He's been outstanding all season and already has 72 tackles in 8 games.

I'd like to know how many player you had out due to COVID testing? Unsure, unless the players have came out Holtz and Co are very tight lipped about injuries/illness/etc.

How many back-ups were starting tonight for LA Tech?
Both OT's were backups, the LT is a true FR that has missed 10 weeks of practice/etc due to injury/COVID. RB and WR were both down the top two options, though Tucker had been taking on a higher load the past two games prior to the month layoff.

How many starters have opted out at LT this season and who they are? 5. Both starting OT, WR1, RB1, and our most experienced LB/DE. RB1 and DE/LB were preseason 1st Team All Conference members.

And, does Holtz consider this to be a rebuilding year at LA Tech?Yes, although with his coach speech he would never say it outright. We came into the season with 3 new starters in the O-line, losing our top receiver the previous season, and after losing a three year QB behind center on Offense. Defensively Tech had to replace 8 starters and then had one of the 3 returners who has not played due to opt-out/injury/covid?!?. Tech also had to replace both the K and P. Throw it all together and Tech has had it's growing pains with a large number of young guys getting significant playing time and even flourishing. It's a rebuilding year, but I know a lot of Tech fans are very pleased with what our FR and SO have shown on both sides of the ball.
I'll answer where I can and maybe another Tech fan can fill in the blanks.

RE: ****W14: LA Tech @ N. Texas, 5:00CT, Thur., CBSSN****
I'll say this...if I were calling the plays, both offense and defense, last night for UNT, my game-plan would have looked different. There were times when it almost looked like UNT was purposely trying not to score. Each time, and it ended up being 3 or 4 times, UNT had the chance to make it a one-possession game...they went away from what was working on offense. On defense pressure works best against Tech's inexperience, under-manned OL. When UNT turned up the heat, Tech went backwards. Yeah, it's a lot easier to be an "arm chair QB" than to actually be a coach on the sideline calling plays, but sometimes things are fairly obvious.

Darden is a "joy" to watch. A lot easier to say that now, but I was throwing pillows at my brand new 85" big screen TV and screaming, "tackle that dude!" He's an amazing player. Hope to see him in the NFL next season...sure don't want to see him making fools of Tech DBs again.

Glad to get the win. Wasn't sure how 33 days of rust was going to play out, but I thought we looked fairly sharp.

Good game North Texas fans. Mad respect for your WR. He is a great player. I'm glad we got the win. Two other things I would like to mention. First being, that I absolutely loved your uniforms last night. They looked fantastic. Second thing is that while I complain about CUSA a good bit, I do love playing North Texas every year. Its a big game of us no matter what the records are. UNT, Rice and USM are my three favorite teams for Tech to play in football. They feel like actual rival games to the Tech faithful. Same can be said about UAB and UTSA.

I agree with you. I love that we play Tech, USM, and Rice. And I selfishly like that we play UTSA since that's an easy drive for me. UAB and UTEP in our division are fine too. The West is a pretty cool division.

It's difficult to assemble the complete picture you were asking about. I'm sure it's the same with all our programs.

For last night's game Tech was missing at least 10 due to opt out/injury.

* W. Allen - LT1 (opted out and grad transferred to Michigan)
* D. Campbell - LT1a (guard converted to LT because LT1, LT2 and LT3 were out.
Opted out last month.
* B. Rossell - LT2
* A. Lewis - RT1
* J. Henderson - RB1
* A. Hardy - WR1
* J. Johnson - WR
* G. Scott - WR
* W. Baker - DE/LB1
* K. Ladler - DB1.

Started true Freshmen at LT, LB and CB. Redshirt Freshmen at RT and DT.

We also had a redshirt Sophomore DB who was out of practice all week but at the last minute made the trip and started.
