RE: Is there any chance for a viable Northeastern FBS conference?
Nova’s was $39.5MM in 2017.
Georgetown’s was $39.9 last year

Couldn’t find anything on the other two.

Completely Northeastern? No.

A Northeastern division of the conference? Sure. It wouldn't be a Power conference but there are some options.

Barring any defections from other conferences, there really isnt a viable path without realignment of the most foolish proportions:

UCONN
UMASS
Stony Brook
New Hampshire
Rhode Island
Villanova
Georgetown
JMU
Delaware

No way in hell this happens, but these are the schools with the budget to move up...over time. I don’t see the NCAA approving another FBS G5 conference.

In order for this to happen, they would all have to go independent and then sign scheduling agreements in fb and basketball for 6 years and then petition to create an FBS conference.

Ain’t happening.

I would throw in Youngstown State who wanted FBS. Eastern Kentucky is also up there in the region.
I think West Chester in D2 might be the only top notch other public U in Penn that might be able to pull it off in the state, but they need to upgrade to D1 first. They were a former D1 school, but dropped down.

Neither Youngstown State nor Eastern Kentucky are in the North East, and either school joining such a conference would be a death sentence.

West Chester is as far away from being a viable DI-FBS schools as the Atlanta Falcons.

RE: Is there any chance for a viable Northeastern FBS conference?
If YSU wanted to be FBS, they’d have done it when Tressel was in his heyday in the early to mid 90’s. Plus, they are doomed by location. Ohio is essentially super-saturated with FBs schools:

tOSU
Ohio
Toledo
BGSU
Kent
Akron
Miami
Cincy

No way. They have nowhere to go. And you can’t be serious with this nonsense. YSU’s budget is $16MM and change(2018).

Once again you know nothing about Ohio and especially the Youngstown area. Next time think.... before you post.

Who was it? Montana, North Dakota St, South Dakota St, Idaho, etc.

The only way it would work would be

Idaho
Missouri St
Montana
Montana St
North Dakota
North Dakota St
Northern Iowa
South Dakota
South Dakota St

Perhaps a football only membership for New Mexico St. Possibly a few Oly-only schools to get to 12 in all sports.

This would be a long shot. The Montana schools have been too scared to move up in the past and some of the schools would be a stretch to make it. But this would probably be the only way that NDSU gets up to FBS since they are too far out from any other leagues.

Georgetown isn’t committed to FCS football, much less FBS.

Yeah, I know... they just have the budget to do it. I think I was meaning Holy Cross

JMU has the budget that they could join this alliance if they wanted to. Stony Brook and the rest can’t afford to keep up without some serious increases in spending.

Barring some cataclysmic reorganization of P5 that orphans several of the P5 schools in the region the players needed to make a Northeast conference a reality just aren’t there.

This. I don’t see why UCONN-UMASS isn’t a yearly game. Also I think NMSU & UMASS should do a in-season H-H like Idaho/NMSU did. Would give more home games for both sides.

I think the schools are realizing that it needs to be an annual game if they are both going to survive as independents—possibly an in season H-H.

Frankly, one of those match ups should be rivalry weekend.

During CCG weekend they should take turns playing away games at NMSU—a trip to a warm southern place at the end of the season can give the appearance of a “bowl” game without actually being a real bowl game since those two are going to struggle to reach bowl eligibility.

Depends on your definition of warm. In Las Cruces this week they aren't leaving the 50's for the high with lows in the 20's.

I figured it would be warm the first week in December that far south—that weather sounds no better than Ohio that time of year.

The conference could agree to play with less than 85 scholarships so that it's not that huge of an additional expense than they're already doing, and now they can demand higher fees for "buy" games if they count as FBS wins, as well as getting to play in bowls and split the revenue.

If not, how can UConn and UMass stay viable in the FBS long-term?

In today's FBS of 10-14 team conferences, maybe not a true Northeastern conference but perhaps something close (so long as the schools were willing which is the much harder sell.)

It's south but it's also 3900 feet above sea level.

The trouble is to officially be a conference in FBS you have to have 8 full members who sponsor football. You’ve got 8 football teams listed there but Army and UConn aren’t going to leave their existing conferences. Temple probably wouldn’t either.

That line up could work as a scheduling alliance but the NCAA wouldn’t let them vote on FBS matters and their winner wouldn’t be eligible for the G5 autobid to the NY6.
