I mean, he isn't wrong. When's the last time you have been to an ODU basketball game with that kind of energy?

Rare energy in the building these days. This is not a party. It's a ODU Sports discussion board.

My point was every time someone veers off into positivity, the next guy flips the script. It was said in jest and was smartassy. Nevermind...

I understand where you are coming from.... It's painful to see these old Youtube Moments of where ODU Basketball was and not get depressed about where we are now....

Just a couple years back we had a team that was on par or better than that team but we love to self loathe.

THIS! It is my sincere belief that the top four teams in CUSA would easily compete with the best teams of the CAA of old. We are just luck enough to complete in a league no one cares about, but we were there in the early days of the CAA too, one bid league that no one cared about for years and years.

We struggle against Williams and Mary and we have 1 (maybe 2) wins against VCU with Jeff Jones. This is embarrassing.

RE: Monarchs Playing Pro Ball
The revisionist history around the program is becoming "back in my day" levels of storytelling. Blaine's teams went 10-20 overall against VCU including losing the first 8 in a row....

First 8 years of their ODU tenures (JJ is entering year 9 which coincidentally is the year Blaine's teams got REALLY good):
Taylor: 161-94, 2 NCAA Tournaments (0-2), 1 NIT Tournament, 1 CBI Tournament, 1 CIT Tournament, 6-14 v. VCU
Jones: 168-94 1 NCAA Tournament (0-1), 1 NIT Tournament, 1 CBI Tournament, 1 Vegas 16 Tournament, 2-6 v. VCU

The program should be so much more and I have been in favor in moving on from JJ for years but to pretend like the mid 2000s teams were the good old days and something we should long for is off because we have that now. That 05-06 team went 24-10 and was 4th in the CAA before losing in the 1st round of the conference tournament...

How do you account for this misperception?

1. The conference - not having any natural rival or fanbase(s) to compare to and/or antagonize has been brutal. It's easier to take 24-10 when you beat an in-state rival or out perform another rival in the post-season. CAAZone used to be a zoo and every game "felt" bigger even if from a 10,000 foot view its nearly a wash. Add in the conference tournament being drivable and you have a perfect storm.

2. Nostalgia - People long for past times when they were younger, more excitable and cared more. 24-10 when you're pre-gaming at PFranks before a game vs George Mason at the age of 25 feels better and elicits a response more than going 15-8 and watching every game on ESPN+ when you're 40 if the results aren't that far off. Especially after the last two seasons.

3. The coach's personality - Blaine elicited a response, Jeff doesn't. VCU and GMU fans hated Blaine. He mixed it up, talked **** in the press, got T's, etc. That builds rivalries, gets people invested and sometimes masks results because you have a character leading the program. Jeff doesn't do that, so while their results are virtually identical to this point, Blaine added a pizzazz to everything which is what people remember.

I’ve read and listened to both sides of the argument and good arguments have been made each way but I have to agree with you in the end. I word it this way so as to let others know that I (and I’ll assume that you as well) have been a supporter for many years and feel qualified to provide this perspective. My support goes back to the early 1970’s forward and consistently up to this point.
