And, I hope it remains. Steve was the best post player in school history. Great big man moves, worked his ass off to make himself available for dump down passes. Shot over 50%. Do a comparison of total field goal attempts and then see what you think.

Also need to compare number of games played. I would have to think that Lewis will end up playing more games even with the shortened year this year.

RE: Matt Lewis scoring record watch
Matt Lewis has been a very good and talented player for JMU. Hopefully his Senior Season provides a little more context on how good with a better team and coaching staff around him.

This is not to discredit Matt but more so to give credit to the last great player at JMU before him. I feel by his Junior and Senior season Ron Curry was even better than Lewis has been the thus far. He had better coaching but less talent around him was a two way player and I think if you go back and look his advanced metrics and shooting percentages were higher. I thought he should of won POY. Just pointing out how good a player Curry was because I think he is often overlooked. Maybe by seasons end it will be clear that Lewis matched or even exceeded Curry as a player. If he does that will bode well for this years Dukes.

I think this is a thread about a total points title, not a best post player title, or a great big man moves title, or a worked his ass off title, or a available for a dump down pass title, or a FG% title, of a FG attempt title.

Matt Lewis is great young man. I had the opportunity to speak with him a few times. Its not his fault things did not go well. Instead of diminishing his accomplishments and ability, I thank him for staying here. It would ve been real easy to leave after his freshman sophomore or junior years. I hope he gets the record and leads our team to a decent season. God knows he deserves it.

He was 5 for 14 overall, but 4-9 from 3 point line and 13-14 from the line. His TS% for the game was 66.96%. Just for illustrative purposes, Matt's percentage for the NSU game would place him 6th on the all-time NCAA career list. So that's a really good game.

I should know this but embarrassingly I do not. If a player is fouled while shooting, does the shot taken count as a field goal attempted? I thought it did not.

RE: Matt Lewis scoring record watch
Curry easily was a better player than Matt was when comparing Junior seasons. Matt was likely better his Freshman and Sophomore years. I feel like Curry made a quantum leap between his Sophomore and Junior seasons. Nation and Cooke were option 1 and 2 in Curry’s first two years so Curry had to share the ball with them. Matt has always been option 1 while at JMU which makes comparing the two tough.

Curry was the best player in the CAA his Senior season IMO. I would love to see Matt have a similar season.

The FG attempt is not counted when fouled unless the shooter makes the shot. So the misses shown in a box score are legit misses.

I think Curt mentioned it last game...Amadi is going to have a lot of “and one” scores in his career. He goes to the rim with authority and will make shots through contact.

Amadi is very muscular for a mid major Freshman. The guys thighs are huge. You don’t get a Freshman with that kind of size at our level of basketball very often. If you do, they are usually lacking a lot in the basketball skills department.

If / when Matt gets the scoring record it will be his. Does not mean he's the best, or even a top 10 player, but certainly a big accomplishment.

This last decade or two does not have a lot of highlights - this can be a mini highlight.

RE: Matt Lewis scoring record watch
Going back to the other thread, I believe anyone is allowed to retain a year of eligibility due to covid. Could Matt stay on as a grad student next year? He may want to go overseas but think how many he could end up with if he got another year. More importantly, think of next year's team if they got used to each other this year.

This brings up all sorts of weird scenarios. There is a player from UTSA who scored more than 2000 points through 3 years. If he got a 5th, maravich might even be in play. Can you imagine the meltdown if someone broke that record in their 160th game?

My fear with any good freshman is the no sit a year new transfer rules... I hope Amadi likes JMU but he ca't even experience JMU this year.

As a senior in 2015-2016, Curry was sixth in the CAA in scoring. 17.3 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 3.6 assists is not normally going to be good enough for POY. Hofstra's Juan'ya Green, who won POY, shot two-pointers poorly, but averaged a whopping 7.1 assists. Green's 17.8 points and 4.4 rebounds were a little higher than Curry, and Hofstra won the tiebreaker for their first 1 seed. The POY votes were 35 for Green, 2 for Curry, 2 for UNCW's Chris Flemmings, and 1 for Northeastern's David Walker.

I believe Curry outplayed Juan’ya when they went head to head and I think Ron was a better all around player but I get why Green won.

RE: Matt Lewis scoring record watch
Matt seems like a great kid, and his grit and determination are not in question. I think he wants to win as much, if not more than anyone. There is also no doubt about his ability to score. But scoring doesn't equate to wins in his case. There are prolific scorers who make those around them better, and there are those who suck the oxygen out of the room. I believe Matt is the latter. When he has the ball in his hands the others tend to do a lot of watching. They know he's looking to score and will rarely look to dish to the open man when the defense converges. Whether he feels he's got to shoulder the load or it's just his DNA, the result is the same. The shot goes up, and there is no one there to rebound.

Agree

I believe Matt's grit and determination was the Achilles heel the past few seasons. The second half of the VCU game I thought I saw moments of "team success first, what can I do to make others successful?"

It drives me crazy to see a seasoned guard "jack" up a three with little to no chance of an offensive rebound. Opponents see those frustration/desperation shots as a weakness and an easy possession. He's good but I believe there's an opportunity for him to be great.
