RE: #ProDukes
Not sure if we have 3 starters in the NFL on defense probably more like one but I get your point.

Fired from JMU, then back to D-III John Carroll U. as DC. Five years later, he's a head coach in the NFL. Quite the career trajectory!
Went back and looked at the 2014 roster. Notable defensive players:
DL:
-Sage Harold: 1st team All CAA, UDFA Redskins.
-Andrew Ankrah: Future consensus AA DE, UDFA Redskins.
-Simeyon Robinson: future 1st team ALL CAA DT, UDFA Bengals.
-Alex Mosely: future All CAA DE.
LB:
-Gage Steele: past & future All CAA LB.
-Kyre Hawkins: future 1st team All CAA/AA LB.
-Brandon Hereford: future All CAA LB.
Secondary:
-Dean Marlowe: starting S this season Bills.
-Raven Greene: starting S this season Packers (season ending injury).
-Jimmy Moreland: starting CB this season Redskins.
-Jordan Brown: future AA S.
-Taylor Reynolds: 3x All CAA, future AA CB.
So you have a former JMU DC that coached a defense with 3 future NFL starters, more talent than probably every team JMU faced that season sans MD, that underperformed, got fired, yet 7 years later gets hired as an NFL HC. Good for him. Only in America.
Do we know for certain that Staley was let go?
I had thought that HE decided to leave. In any case, installing a new defense certainly didn't help his results that year, especially with the amount of youngsters that got playing time. And I'd bet my last dollar that Withers interfered with what Staley wanted to do.
