Anxious to see where current Notre Dame backup QB Brendon Clark ends up. He'll have three years of eligibility left.

I double checked his twitter follows and its still mostly ODU coaches and 4 JMU accounts and some oneoffs at VT, South Carolina, and others.

Any QB that can throw a good enough deep ball to keep a defense honest should have our offense FBS ready with our RB depth. I'm sure the coaches are keeping an eye on potential transfers to give Atkins another year or two of development (and a redshirt year if that falls thru over the next 5 games).

I used to work with Brendon's mother before retiring this past Spring. They're a nice family. If I were still working with her I would have at least tried to get the scuttlebutt regarding where he might end up.

I suspect it could come down to JMU and Old Dirty since I don't see available slots at the P5 schools who offered him coming out of Manchester: Clemson, Duke, Maryland, Tennessee, UNC and Wake Forest.

One minor update today. I noticed on fbschedules.com that our 2028 game at UNC has been announced as being on September 23, 2028.

The important thing is, did the cash double?

Future FB Schedule (2022-2028)
Quietly, the 2023 game against Bucknell has disappeared off of JMU’s schedule page. Interesting if we bought it out, especially during a transition year. I’d think 2024 and later is when we’d buy out a game.

RE: Future FB Schedule (2022-2028)
Makes sense if only one FCS game can count for bowl eligibility. They still have Morehead St in 2023. 3 more OOC games needed. Get one home game and then 2 away games. Hopefully, they are big pay games that not only offset the $100k we probably owe Bucknell but also helps fund the $5 million additional needed annually for FBS related costs.
Get those road games early and maybe set up great home return games once JMU has fully transitioned and has a FBS roster that can beat P5 teams.

Things are starting to take shape.
The rumor is that Cig has already contacted Saban about Alabama’s schedule opening in 2023.
FYI, Alabama has been paying G5 schools $1.9 million to come to Tuscaloosa. $1.9 Million.

Let’s go!

Cancelling the Bucknell game even when transitioning still might be a good strategy. If that gives us the degrees of freedom to use that spot to use that game to establish a good OOC home & home with a G5 or a 2-1 with a P5, might as well use that spot for a higher value game.

I'm sure Bucknell didn't need much convincing, as an FCS foe we'll crush them but as a FBS loaded lineup it would be ridiculous.

RE: Future FB Schedule (2022-2028)
To Hart's point, definitely seems like a good idea to start thinking about bowl eligibility with FCS/FBS games even in 2023. Even though we aren't guaranteed a bowl if we win enough to be eligible, there's the possibility we could get invited to one if there aren't enough other eligible teams so seems smart to approach the season as if that's something we need to shoot for.

Good point. I was about to say buying out a 2nd FCS in 2023 might be pointless given the lack of bowl eligibility, but I suppose the NCAA does still allow transitioning teams to compete in bowls when there’s a lack of bowl eligible teams some years. It also makes sense to buy it out if you’re more than offsetting the cost with enticing Home and home series that yield more overall revenue.

Morehead will not count towards bowl eligibility since they do not offer scholarships. The last time we should see any Pioneer teams going forward should be 2022. (So we also need to get rid of that Presbyterian game in 2024.)

While the Patriot league allows 60 FB schollys (recently upped from 40), there's a good chance Bucknell has no plans to go that high. To get the FBS games you must offer an average of 53 (I think that's the number) over a rolling two year period. Bucknell may not be able to give that guarantee to us.

Good note. So we really need to dump Morehead State too. That makes it harder because JMU is going to seek 50% home games and many programs are already booked in 2023.
Maybe they can get a FBS to play a JMU neutral site game in FedEX in 2023.
If you think about it, the DMV is where the fanbase is going to grow the most upon JMU’s move to FBS. Many have thought we played D II football up until now.
Throw them a bone and reel them in for an easy trip and also help entice an opponent to play us without having to enter a hostile Bridgeforth stadium.
This might be more palatable for someone like Army who doesn’t need to be in Harrisonburg, but could fill the joint with Military people in DC at the center of the Dept of Defense. Army has an opening in 2023. 9/30 or 11/11. I don’t think they want to play on 11/25 turkey weekend.

Bucknell did play Army this year and has Navy scheduled for 2024. It's very possible that they have an ebb-flow thing going with their scholarships where they reach that high threshold every 3 years or so. They might have looked at what they'll have in 2023 and both teams realized that they won't meet that in 2023 so they went ahead and cancelled that game now that that is important to us.

I was going to say I hope they swapped the football game out for a basketball game as Buckner was a solid midmajor program. But they’ve dropped off a bit the past few seasons.

Thanks, my lack of research regarding the Army and Navy games sort of sent my thoughts tumbling.

According to Bourne we just need 1 more FBS game to shorten our transition.

According to that tweet it’s one more FBS home game though. Good luck on that.

Would Sam Houston or Jacksonville State count? (Serious question)
