Sure, it’s a cupcake for both. But is Georgia Tech also scheduling Norfolk State or Morehead State in that same season? Clearly it’s different.

A little background on PC's transition to non-scholarship "D1" football.

http://www.indexjournal.com/sports/colle...88299.html

They were a D2 school until 2013. I thought they had been FCS much longer than that.

Exactly. Almost every school has one cupcake game each season before a big rivalry game or tough OOC opponent - and thats fine. The difference for us is our only tough opponents can be found in the semifinals or finals of the playoffs, and we have no real conference rivals. I complain about the OOC schedule because the only games that ever move the needle for me and my friends are the FBS matchup

Yeesh. I don’t think this is something to be proud of. I agree that this should have been just slipped into the online schedule and not announced to the world. 2025 isn’t atrocious, but not their best effort for sure. One MEAC team is more than enough in a season. 2 makes it worse. Throw in the fact that JMU will also play AT Monmouth in the 12 game season. At least the Dukes are playing at VA Tech that year so we can quickly forget about the 3 warmup games and focus energy on ripping the Hokies hearts out again. Maybe they will schedule us 15 years later in 2040 after their AD and coach have changed. 04-rock

I bet their fans are raging about it.

It's intentionally dishonest to act like this is a fair comparison

RE: Future FB Schedule (2021-2028)
NC A&T is moving to the Big South starting July 1, 2021 so JMU will not be playing back to back MEAC schools. The Big South is trying to upgrade its membership. They are adding a Southland school along with two OVC schools. A&T is a solid FCS program.

Between the ASun and WAC, the Southland is losing a bunch of schools.

There might not be a MEAC conference by 2025.

Hahaha. This makes me feel better. Just the name “Big” in Big South clearly makes it superior to the MEAC. 02-13-banana

RE: Future FB Schedule (2021-2028)
We should not ever lose to a Big South school but we did to Liberty when they were in the Big South. We also lost twice to Colgate of the Patriot. Sometimes I think we fans are too big for our britches. We think JMU should dominate every school except NDSU.

We have had a great run lately but let’s not forget that until 2016, we had two good playoff runs in our entire football history. The rest is mostly no playoffs or first round losses. We have lost games to MEAC, Big South and Patriot League schools along the way so let’s not look down our noses at them. This being said, I too am not crazy about playing cupcakes especially two in one season.

That was then and this is now!

Do we want to take advantage of the lightning we have caught in a bottle with Cig, his coaching and recruiting ability, the draw of our peerless facilities (within FCS), and grow into the future, becoming bigger and better than any of us ever imagined?

Or do we want to say, "Oh, well, once upon a time we lost to Liberty and Colgate twice. We sucked then, so we must still suck. Who the hell do we think we are?"

Clearly, we are not the same team that lost to Liberty and Colgate. The difference is Curt Cignetti. He won't be with us forever. Let's use him to grow our program, not wring our hands and say, "We sucked before, so we will always suck." Let's believe we can kick every opponent in the ass. I definitely believe it!

I just don't get the "We ain't so great as we think" attitude.

Yes, we are!

I don’t feel we have ever sucked except one season in the early Mickey years. My post was more to say a little humbleness goes a long way.

RE: Future FB Schedule (2021-2028)
No doubt, any opponent can beat you at any time and it would be a sports miracle if any of these cream puffs actually won. However, I side with the position that JMU has no business playing these games in the first place. It simply isn’t a fair competition and it does absolutely nothing to advance the program.

Trivia for the day...
Add up the Football budgets for Morehead State, Norfolk State, Robert Morris, Presbyterian and the sum is still 40% less than JMU. That’s right, the all-star team doesn’t even belong on the same field as the Dukes.

When you have limited OOC games every year, why waste them on garbage teams?
I don’t attend these home games since they do not capture my interest and are not legit competition. However, It appears that the Poor, the Weak, and the Bourne scheduling “strategy” is going to live even after he retires. Crap games are already scheduled and the 2025 schedule is locked with a couple of openings left on the 2023 schedule. Huge voids are left in 2020 and 2021 with neither year having a FBS game.

When you spend as much money as JMU spends, expectations and aspirations should absolutely be higher.

When did we lose to a MEAC school? Hampton way back in the early 2000s?

Edit: We lost to Hampton in 2002. That was the last MEAC loss.

If you want to find out what attempts were made to find other opponents for these seasons, you can submit a FOIA request to JMU.

Greg Madia literally posted an article listing all programs JMU reached out to for scheduling games this fall. I believe he said only about four of those programs expressed serious enough interest to verbally commit to working towards scheduling games.

RE: Future FB Schedule (2021-2028)
Yeah, here is the article. No need to file a FOIA, the DNR aLready did back in August.

https://jamesmadison.rivals.com/news/not-in-the-cards-3

In another article/interview Bourne said he had 4 to 6 games lined up when JMU pulled the plug and Alger decided to cancel Fall sports. This was back on August 7th which was 4 weeks before the season started. How many yes answers could they have received between August 7th and now? We don’t know because they waived the white flag and stopped asking.

We see that 144 D-1 teams played football this Fall. 2 of the schools that played were ones that already had a contract with JMU coming into 2020.
@UNC
Home vs Chattanooga

That would be the starting point of “what if”.
JMU had 2 games in the bag. How many more could they have secured as possible opponents became open due to quarantine? Nobody has a sure answer, but I think the answer is at least something more than 2+0.
Factor in the CAA’s decision to create a 6 game CAA Spring Season and JMU could have stopped at 3, 4, or 5 Fall games and remained eligible to compete in the Spring too.

And Alger still refuses to talk about why he feels this was a good decision as he sees he is on an island with yet another athletics faux pas. 01-scout
This one surpasses his covert midnight penning of the anti-COA manifesto back in 2015 along with 8 other presidents of universities that have tiddlywinks athletics programs. He was called out on that and became mute, then eventually relented and changed his position.

Athletic “faux pas”? Last I heard JMU is playing FB in the Spring and will be competing for an opportunity to play for a NC.

In other news the Oklahoma/WVU FB game has been cancelled. The Texas/Kansas FB game has been cancelled. Indeed, the entire Big XII football season has been shut down now due to COVID. Many of the marquee matchups in the Big X have been postponed and/or canceled for the same reason.

Let’s face it. The decision to cancel FB (and all JMU athletics) in the Fall was a no-win scenario. Even now with the multiple cancellations for JMU MBB in the news, harping on “what if’s” about possible FBS matchups had JMU tried to play FB in the Fall is simply a pointless exercise.

This entire year (and possibly 2021 too) will go down in history as a dark and deadly period in American and World history. I just can’t get upset about playing FCS FB in the Spring when over 300,000+ Americans (and counting) have already died from COVID.
