A former Richmond AD is doing more to help the Dukes than the conference we helped create, strange times. Welp, sunnier days ahead and FBS teams visiting Bridgeforth!

You mean we can't just do what some posters want and schedule 12 road games at Alabama every week?

Keith Gill and UR are not fans of one another. It was not a good relationship.

I believe this drama pertains to the CAA main conference (olympic sports). CAA Football is a separate legal entity and that football conference has actually not retaliated against JMU in any way as far as I know of. We're still eligible to win the title this year, for example.

I don't believe the presidents of the CAA football affiliate schools had any vote or say in this drama. If we still get along with them and both sides can agree on a game, probably in Harrisonburg, I say why not?

The affiliate football members are Richmond, Villanova, Stony Brook, Albany, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Maine.

I thought we could not win the CAA Football Title - had to count on the at-large? If not, that's got to be a CAA-Football decision since they are a separate entity isn't it? Man this gets confusing!

To my knowledge, that is correct. The CAA Championship ban applies to the non-football schools (for this year). CAA Football (a separate entity) has not taken any action against us, so we are still eligible for the AQ. (And with most of the CAA Football schools not being full CAA members - and outside witnesses to the backlash - there likely would not be any emergency move like that.)

How CAA Football wants to handle everything in 2022, that is completely unknown. Since we are not a conference where everyone plays everyone else each year, I can't see them wanting to have only 8 of the remaining 11 CAA Football teams play a team who is loading up with I-A players/scholarships and have it count in the CAA standings. It would put those teams at a disadvantage vs those that do not have to play us.

But it does sound like the bridges have not been burned with those non-full-CAA teams as of now.

I'm being a little picky, but technically, the bolded schools are not affiliate CAA-Football members. CAA-Football has only one sport, therefore all CAA-Football members are full members of CAA-Football as it would be impossible to have affiliates. You might say they are affiliate members of the CAA and be a little closer to being correct, but since the CAA and CAA-Football are separate, that wouldn't be accurate either.

I hope Bourne is/can contact the Florida Gators and there is a miracle game slot next season.

Samford scored 52 on the Gators yesterday and the Florida players celebrated in the locker room like the just won the super bowl after beating a fcs team

I would love to see JMU vs Florida. I can't remember JMU playing a SEC team, ever.

I am sure that the people in charge are working hard at it. Next years schedule could be a real mish mash of FCS and low level FBS teams that might make everyone unhappy but considering all that is going on might be the best we can get in the first transition year. Year two should be good though.

Go Dukes!!

Anybody that complains about next years schedule is just a salty anti competition fcs lover that can stay home and play with their Blackberry

Yeah they've totally quit on Mullen, he should be fired tomorrow. Would love to see JMU in the swamp, if it were this year CoJo would throw for 20 TDs.

Cignetti said today that JMU will have a "majority FBS" schedule next year, so I guess we can assume that means 7+.

Shane Mettlen said the SBC is working to try and get JMU and the other 3 new schools a full SBC schedule for 2022... but i'll believe that when I see it.

Good news from Cig. Everytime I see this thread bolder I’m hoping to open it and see JMU has signed a big FBS game for next year.

We're trying to get NCAA approval to allow you guys to play a complete SBC schedule for football next year and making sure you count as an FBS team for all. You would be ineligible to win the conference title in 2022 as part of the deal since there's no possible postseason, but would be eligible for the title in 2023.

Other sports will move normally in 2022. Though again, I still think its possible the SBC may allow some of your Olympic sports teams to play in the SBC postseason in certain sports this year.

.

I'd take a year of maybe taking our lumps in order to expedite the transition process.

It is my understanding that teams transitioning to FBS are considered FBS for bowl eligibility in their first year of the two year transition. Given the bonus scholarships we have from the Covid extra years, we are probably where a typical first year transitioner would be. Being eligible for bowls and conference titles a year early would be a huge boost though.

RE: Future FB Schedule (2021-2028)
Mettlen has already said that we count as an FBS win for purposes of bowl eligibility. Definitely will be interesting to see how this plays out, would be very nice to get NCAA approval to play in the Sun Belt next year... Really even if not, other transitioning teams like ODU have played as an independent for their first transition year with a mix of FBS/FCS... Is there really anything keeping all of the Sun Belt East and a couple Sun Belt West teams from scheduling JMU "out of conference" if that's what JMU and the SBC want? Is there a minimum to conference games that those 8 teams wouldn't be hitting or anything like that?

Biggest obstacle is how the game is counted. My guess is that you guys will play 8 SBC Opponents next year, 6 from the East and 2 from the West. You'll play Louisville, both your current FCS contracts, and then find one G5 opponent you could potentially start a home and home with for next year.

Call Jon Gilbert and Mike Houston in Greenville and see if we can interest the Pirates with a home and home series or one of the Service Academies.

If we get 8 SBC games, Lville, and 3 FCS - we better really bulk up yet stay fit for 2022. Would be exciting, and maybe go .500? I could see 7-5 if we catch a scheduling break or 2, or 5

If that schedule (8 SBC, 2 FCS, 1 P5) comes to fruition for the 2022 season there is no chance we go 7-5, which is perfectly fine. It's called a transition for a reason. What a freakin' homerun that would be to jump straight into that level of competition. You have to think about it from a recruiting standpoint too. It's one thing to talk about being FBS, it's another thing to have numerous opportunities to show recruits FBS level football in person. I really hope this smoke turns into fire.
