Then followed that up with 11 points and 3 boards on Sunday...so he is averaging double figures, though admittedly against glorified high schools. I just hope we continue to see positive stories from him, as there was clearly a health related reason why he wasn't cleared here.

Will make Eastside’s day. I’ll shoot him a note.

He was fan #001 on the Prince bandwagon going back to the Nike EYBL days.

Jury still out on Penny. Brendel made good points on twitter that Memphis doesn't play like tradtionally poorly coached teams--they have a strong identity on the defensive end but can't figure out how to run an offense. If you watch UK play year to year, it's typically the opposite. The big recruits come in with the ability to score and then pick up on Cal's defensive system by tournament time.

In any case, Penny was also coaching AAU 3 years ago. So it's tough to gauge where he should be at as a coach. He has talent in there but they were still the youngest team in basketball last season.

One of the teams they played against is a for-profit school called Florida National that competes in the USCAA. Their mascot is the Conquistadors. The athletic program started in 2013. I wonder how they got that name past the PC committee.

Year 3 and it's not like either of their losses so far are WTF. They can turn it around.

We also need them to be good. Penny is so likable across basketball and has generated a ton of positive press for the conference. I want him to be successful.

He makes Mick Cronin look like an Offensive Genius.

He’s still on an initial 3 year deal. This keeps up it will not be a long tenure. Their fans are getting appropriately surly.

You have to think a point comes where others can recruit against him by pointing out that he's not getting his players ready to take the next step.

Memphis is incredibly easy to defend if your team has a pulse.

They run nothing off the ball. No screens. No cuts. They bring the ball down jack up a 3 or play hero ball to get to the rim in an ISO. Every person on this board could coach Memphis’ offensive sets. When they are hitting everything from 3 it works but that goes for any team. When they are not hitting from behind the arc they are often more talented but out coached by the teams they play.

If this year goes sideways (off to a good start there) and they are looking at like a 6 seed in the conference tournament yet again, I wonder if they give him the extension or if they just call it a day on Penny’s 3 year experiment.

Except he just had two freshman picked #2 and #20 in the 2020 NBA draft.

And it did what for their team? 6 seed in the conference tourney and they were hoping to win a couple games in the NIT (Memphis Invitational). They are worse this year.

Lots of talent and nobody can dribble or pass.

Do his players really care how their team does, as long as they get drafted by the NBA?

Therein lies the problem. Everyone plays for their highlight tape. It’s what happens when your coach rolls the ball out and says go get em’.

At least Caliperi knows how to design an offense and get guys to buy in. He’s sleazy, but he’s a pretty good X’s and O’s guy.

Murray St dropped 173 last night. Samford scored 174 last week.

I had to read that twice. Lol.

Greenville is D3 with a total student body of...850.

There are 372 D1 programs...need to ban playin games against non-D1 opponents. This is silly.

Great point, there are plenty of guaranteed wins to be found among at least the bottom 100 in D1 without scheduling elsewhere. I believe D1 should shrink in the near future anyway. The disparity in funding between a program such as UC and programs in the bottom half (or more) of D1 suggests few will ever compete.

It’s actually 347...my memorizer had a glitch.

D3 is just glorified high school basketball. No knock intended. Most kids go to a larger high school than these itty bitty colleges

Yep...many people who rode benches for good high schools end up playing at the D3 level. There was a kid on my previous football team who bragged on twitter about his 14 "offers" from D3 schools...he played 14 downs for us total in his high school career, but the schools knew he could pay so they figured "Why not?" lol.

Only people who play D3 normally are those who either have more money than sense (since scholarships are a no go and you're looking at $50,000+/year at most D3 schools) or no sense at all. My old high school soccer team used to "unofficially" scrimmage two NW Ohio D3 teams in the summer since our coach knew their coaches well and their coaches knew we were a better team than most of their conferences...I think the closest game was 5-0 with us winning going away.

I coached several kids in baseball that chased the dream at the D3 level. It’s an expensive pastime going that route. If you have decent grades, your check will clear, and you let it be known that you are interested, they will find you.

I think I still get emails from time to time about my sons for baseball from places like Otterbein, Baldwin Wallace, and Ohio Wesleyan and my kids have been out of high school for years. Guessing they don’t clean up those lists collected at AABC tournaments very often.
