RE: MBB vs Norfolk St 11/27 12pm
Impressions on the game which was disappointing: Dukes need to get better closing out against the 3, too sloppy with the ball, balance of aggression on d vs fouling, no reliable post game- need 1 or 2 more reliable 3 shooters. Same as last year in that we can’t rely on Harvey and Jacobs to be part of our 3 point shooters. If it will be Morse and Lewis we need one more and I suspect that will be Christmas. Wooden IMO continues to show promise. Seemed more involved on the boards snd inside yesterday as well. He’s definitely part of the solution at JMU moving forward.

Good point. I think Curt said NSU had their top 10 players (in terms of minutes played) returning this year. With disjointed practice time, a new coach & philosophy to learn and basically a whole new roster for JMU, that kind of continuity gave them a big advantage.

Unfortunately, that statement isn’t accurate. They did not return their top 10 players. We can’t explain this one away.
-Norfolk State was playing its very first game
-their coach admitted they only had 4 full practices in the last 40 days due to quarantines and injuries. 04-jawdrop
-they were supposed to return 3 starters, but they graduated key players in their #1 and #3 scorer. Their #2 scorer from last year also sat out yesterday as we found out right before game time.
-yes NSU was 12-4 in the MEAC last year which is the worst rated conference in the country. They were also a miserable 1-11 OOC for a total of 13-15. Not a good team and ranked in the 250 to 280 range last year depending on what rating you look at.
- so not very good last year, missing #1,#2,#3 scorers for this game and their offense simply played much better than JMU’s offense.

We shouldn’t try to fool ourselves that this was a good opponent. It was an upset At home and it should sting. Certainly not the way any of us wanted the AUBC opening to go.

At least Coach By and the team can scout Radford today In person as they play Norfolk State in the AUBC. The team needs to salvage something out of this holiday weekend and the OOC will be over before you blink. After tomorrow, 3 of 8 scheduled OOC games will be complete.

1. Right now, this team isn't very good and on both sides of the ball. With the eye test, their offense was horrid, no doubt, but the stats show the defense was also poor.
2. Contrary to what some think, the team that beat them today is talented, albeit from the MEAC. They returned 10 players from a team that went 12-4 in conference a year ago. I think JMU could play them 10 times and lose every time.
3. Getting Christmas, Fredericks and Hodge back seems to be imperative if this team has any chance this season. Right now this looks like a pretty bad team, unfortunately.
4. I don't like the offensive scheme at all of this team...very little player and ball movement and too many chucked up threes out of the context of an effective offense.
5. Mensah didn't play because he was bad. Of the transfers we've seen, Morse is by far the best player. He looks like a good player. Mensah is a developmental player. Hard to judge Taylor at this point.
6. Of the freshman, Amadi is the standout. Edwards hasn't shown well and Strickland is an undersized point man with a limited offensive game.
7. Lewis played a pretty good game today, but he's not a transformational talent, although he's among the top scorers in school history. Zach Jacobs wasn't good and Harvey hasn't developed. Wooden looks only fair in the early going.
8. Things will get better, but today illuminated where they currently stand and how far they have to go.

I think it was 10 letter winners from last year and the 7th "most experienced" (as far as minutes) team in the country. I thought NSU was a good, athletic team. Agreeing that the Dukes need more game time together to gel and get timing down. Not sure how Mensah was a 4* in HS but he needs to improve a lot for the inside game. Love watching Amadi play. Not going to pass judgement on them at this point after two games.

That Norfalk team is legit, and were missing a key starter. Rob Jones will get a big job within a year or two. Very under rated coach.

He was on the bench yesterday because of foul trouble. Refs called a few ticky tack fouls that I thought were no worse than regular contact over the course of the game, but I'm not wearing the zebra costume.

I agree that JMU should have won that game. I think Norfolk was more rugged than JMU down the stretch. One oddity with yesterday’s game one of the Norfolk bigs went 0-2 from the line his first time there and air balled one. I don’t think he missed a free throw the rest of the way and he must have shot 8-10 more. Showed how rusty Norfolk was in the beginning and JMU was sloppy so they couldn’t take advantage and build any kind of lead.

He may be confusing Christmas with another Hampton roads area player Ramon “Snow”den? Christmas is a true Sophomore.

So NSU goes 2-0 at JMU winning two tight games down the stretch. NSU beating Radford gives me some hope for JMU tonight. If the Dukes can shoot better, then they should get the victory.

I miss 'ol Andrey. He was like an old shoe.
Juwan James graduated in 2009 and Tom Vodanovich graduated in 2017. And somehow Semenov played with both of them!

He played with and for Sherman Dillard too. No one in the history of NCAA sports has received so many waivers.

Uncw was projected by a few outlets to finish in the bottom half of the conference with us. They took ecu to ot earlier this year.
