RE: Penny needs an Antonio Burks
Games like today are when we miss a guy like Tyler Harris. A scorer who has no fear of shooting. Our offense looks elementary at best right now. No sets, no cutting, no off ball movement. Just get the ball and go one on one. But we have no player capable of playing one on one and consistently beating their man.
- Lester too slow (but could be a very good player in a structured offense)
- Boogie is probably our best option but lacks confidence to be consistent
- Landers, not a 1 on 1 player but could score in bunches if he had someone setting him up
- DJ, defenses have figured out to take away his left hand drive and he will just pull up and jack a contested jumper

Deal is you don't have to beat your man if your offense is structured and the guy driving knows where his teammates are and his teammates understand where they need to beat to defeat the defense. Eventually a mistake will be made by the defense that will give you an advantage.

Penny is expecting guys to do what he used to do...Probably having difficulty understanding why they cannot.

I agree but the caveat is "in a structured offense". We do not have that. We have an offense that requires a play maker who can create 1 on 1 but we do not have a player like that on our roster... Penny is force feeding his desired scheme instead of building a scheme around his roster.

IMO we have the players to be a very good team and make it past the first weekend, we just have to play to their strengths. Unfortunately, Penny's offense is literally playing to their weaknesses.

Disagree on Boogie. He doesnt lack confidence - he lacks any kind of scheme to get him space. When a team is hard trapping you high over and over again and all your teammates are either standing still or rim running there aint much you can do. When you are in a lineup with 3 non-shooters on the floor and have every perimeter defender selling out to help on your drives you are going to have some trouble.

We are doing NOTHING to put our players in good spots at all

Wasting way too much PG development time on guards who were not going to help us in the big picture.

ALo isn’t great but the problem is we’re not running an offense. I don’t know who told Penny this is an NBA style offense. Maybe in the late 90s after Jordan it was an iso hero ball league. It’s not anymore. There’s tons of off ball action. I can’t stand watching us screw around for 20 seconds to try to initiate the offense which ends up being a simple screen with no other motion.

RE: Penny needs an Antonio Burks
I do agree that if Martin was on all 3 of Penny's teams we wouldn't be having the conversation...

Last year we would have been ranked all year...

This year we would be undefeated...

But a GOOD coach can adjust to the talent he has...He cant always rely on having a guy who can take over a game.

Also having a good lead guard isn't going to fix the rebounding issues that have plagued Penny since he has been here.

Memphis is + 8 in the second half with Damion Baugh and Boogie Ellis, and -10 with their starting point guard. They started the half down four, and the lead ballooned to 17. Baugh and Boogie check in and you cut the lead to single digits, they check out and the lead again grows to 17, Baugh and Boogie return and again the lead is down to single digits. Stay with Baugh and Boogie, and extend their minutes if you want to improve upon this tournament performance.

Baugh and Boogie are your guys from here on out the rest of the season. They’ve got to be put in an offensive system that encourages ball movement, passing, and cutting and empowers them along with DJ Jeffries, Lester, and Landers on the wing.

For starters, you are (obviously) a liar. Boogie missed a 3 point shot at the 16:57 mark when we were down 10 points. It took me 10 seconds to find that. That's without having to lift a finger.

For fun, let's see the link.

I agree. I an extra future NBA point guard and conference player of the year would be a useful addition.

Yeah. If we just had an NBA quality point guard, James Wiseman, Precious Achuiwa, and CDR, along with a good X and O assistant coach, then we'd be in business.
