Prairie View game thread
Prairie View was good last season, winning the regular season SWAC title. However, the player returning from last year's team with the most minutes was Faite Williams, who was sixth. So, we should have a distinct advantage in experience.

We will also have a height advantage, since they have one player at 6-10, and he is the only one over 6-8.

Since they had a drastic roster turnover since last season, it is hard to tell what to expect from them. Last season they did not shoot well (30.6% from the arc), but they did defend the perimeter very well (29.9%).

They lost the battle of the boards by fraction last season, so with the size advantage we should have, shame on us if we do not dominate rebounding.

Down by 3 at halftime. It just feels like we’re beating ourselves. I just hope it’s first game jitters and nothing else.

Defense was pretty decent. We forced turnovers and the man is pretty physical. Zone is a little slow but that may take a couple games to correct.

Offense is the problem today. I think we’re making good passes but we are a step too slow so that allowed their defense to double our bigs. We just got to be quicker. Also the guards besides Lukic are just shaky shooting wise along with shaky FT shooting.

They are shooting 60% overall and 50% from the arc. Won't lose many games with those numbers.

Nowell has taken 8 shots (three more than anyone else) and has made ONE.

Maric, Monyyong and Lukic are 8 out of 11 collectively. Your point guard is supposed to be getting the ball to the guys who are making shots, not missing shots himself. I hope Coach read him the riot act at halftime.

I watched the game and we were not great but Prairie View is a good team. They won 19 games last year and I would be shocked after watching them if they do not win the SWAC again. We got the win against a good team without playing lights out. I’ll take it. It was a great 2 hours to have basketball back!

We definitely have some kinks to get worked out. We shot 23% from the arc, but if you subtract Nowell, we shot lights out. Monyyong and Maric dominated the boards like we thought they would.

RE: Prairie View game thread
Prairie View is a well coached team and played hard the whole game.

Looks like we made enough adjustments to win. Markquis finally made a couple shots but the thing that really helped was not having any foul trouble and holding our opponent to just 4 free throws I think. We played physical and got to the line. So big guys played well but obviously some jitters from our guards. However I’m glad our guards seemed to have active hands and got some good steals.

Palermo, Bankston, and Lukic seem to be our main bench guys. Andric was in for a bit but didn’t do much in his small playing time.

Markquis will shoot better than that over the run of the season. He just has enough of the NY playgrounds in him that it takes a while to get it out of his system.

We won rebounding by 9, and our two starting big men were 13 out of 19. That will cover up a lot of sins in other areas.

Palermo had a good game. 23 minutes. 2 of 4 from the field. 3 steals.

Sometimes it is better to be lucky than to be good. But it gets tougher from here on.

We don't know who, if any, of these guys have had covid or had to quarantine so we don't know who is in playing shape and who isn't. I was surprised Bankston got only 12 minutes, but he appeared to be a step slow. Was the sloppy play a result of players missing practice and conditioning? Would Kamani Johnson have gotten any minutes?

That is a good question. There probably won't be much "status quo" this season. Who do I have available tonight?

I loved Kamani's game and am certainly pissed he's a pig. But, while I'm sure he would have gotten minutes I doubt he would start on this team. Nikola is bigger and can do more things.

Our defense was iffy at best. That has to improve. However, our rebounding was dominant, and it was the big guys up front who were doing the damage. First of what probably will be a long string of double/doubles for Ruot.

One thing that encouraged me was Maric' rebounding. That has been one of the weaker parts of his game in his first two years. And since he is the muscle guy underneath at 250#, we need him to be tough on the boards.
