Why EMU doesn’t win consistently in Football
To win consistently and perhaps win the MACC, maybe we need to change our recruiting strategy. To win football at any level, you have to be able to 1) Run the ball on offense and 2) Stop the run on defense.

Currently we are dead last in rushing yards. NIU is the second worst team at rushing the ball. How’s NIU doing? In fact go to this link and you can correlate year by year being able to rush the ball and stopping the run to success on the field.

https://www.espn.com/college-football/st...le/general

Creighton knows 1 & 2 because I’ve heard him say it.

Regarding running the ball we seemingly recruit a lot of OL but still can not effectively run the ball. Is this poor play calling, lack of RB talent, poor technique, lack of OL talent?

Regarding stopping the run, I noticed we have 25 DBs on the roster .....25 let that sink in. I’m sure some are walkons but we need to double our DL/DE/LB recruiting numbers and see if we can develop several into a solid defense.

Last year even with Vann and the threat of Glass we struggled early in the season running the ball consistently. My guess is that our OL is more focused on pass protection which requires, lighter faster linemen.

RE: Why EMU doesn’t win consistently in Football
Dear emu79,
Almost all of our offensive linemen from last year were in the 299 to 300 pound range. I don't think that qualifies to lighter, faster linemen, unless I'm missing something.
I think we need better blocking for our running backs, and I am concerned that we either are not recruiting better linemen, or are not developing them, or both.

Incredibly interesting post Luckey! I do not know who is responsible for establishing the defensive recruiting budget by position, Neathery or Creighton. I did check OSU's roster just for kicks and they have only 16 DB's on their roster. As we run a 4-2-5 scheme, I expect us to have more but 25 seems excessive for sure. Especially when their bodies present little opportunity for a position change such as Wylie from TE to tackle and Grissom and Jackson from QB to receiver.

I'm starting to think the "shelf life" of the once regaled FBS defensive coordinators in Washtenaw County may have expired. They had some very good years but their recent trend of success is not acceptable to either program.

neathery gets another year in my book - theyve lost a LOT of dudes over the last couple years.

the dearth of DBs makes more sense when you consider the sort of hybrid safety / LB tweener types are all listed as DBs

It appears to be that our biggest problem is the lack of playmakers on defense.

as indicated above, we've lost some stud defenders, esp. on the DL.

I can't find ONE impact defender on this year's team.

These are hit and miss for G5 schools and we need to get downright lucky and get some DEs like Harris and Crosby.

POC, Harris, and Crosby is a helluva run. Rush is good but not quite as good as the three of them. We got spoiled.

You know what I find funny? Even the much respected Eagle Tough criticized our recruiting results and do you know how many offers his son Maxx Crosby had? I will give you a hint, the number was between 0 and 2. EMU was the ONLY offer!

Side note. Maxx is just incredibly good, if he stays healthy he will be an all-pro player. His speed is what we lack right now.

Steve I would think it would be bat-**** crazy to not bring Neathery back. He clearly has a good football mind and as I stated previously, 2020 is not an actual season in my opinion. James Franklin is 0-5 and Harbaugh is celebrating an over-time over Rutgers, yes freaking Rutgers.

Based on all I have seen, Creighton is experimenting wildly this year with regards to personnel and I laud him for that. 2021 should be a REAL season, we then can hold folks accountable.

yeah the only way you make a change is if the team quits and i do not see that happening.

Also EMU isnt the kind of school to pay dudes NOT to coach if you catch my meaning.
