Precious (10.8)
Ren (10.1)
Dedric (9.3)
And all three played 30+ minutes a game.
Chris Massie and Joey Dorsey are the only two Tigers who have averaged more than 7 rpg while playing less than 25 minutes a game. (since 1990 ish).
The game lends itself to more rebound opportunities in the modern era. Faster pace, so more shots in general, and also far more three point attempts which tend to be lower percentage shots, more misses.
You can say that, but the point remains you don't see rebound numbers from frosh really get above 8 per game unless the player is a 30+ minute guy.
We have had our share of disagreements over the years, but in this case we mostly agree about recruits. Having said that, there are opportunities for outliers under two scenarios.
One, you have a player who is virtually the only viable option at a position. Precious and Dedric are two examples.
Two, you have so little returning that someone has to score by default. Mike Parks, Kareem Brewton and Tyler Harris combined to average 28 points per game between them their first D1 season. CDR, Antonio Anderson and Joe Jackson combined for 25.4 points their first D1 season.
Tyler Harris, Kareem Brewton, KJ Lawson, Trahson Burrell, Antonio Burks and Courtney Trask all averaged more points per game their first D1 season than CDR did.
On the whole though, most grossly overestimate the production and maturity they expect from freshmen. Most, grossly underestimate the improvement a player makes between his first and second D1 season. We have had a lot of players make big improvements after their first season. Grice, Massie, Burks, Carney, CDR, Taggart, Elliot Williams, Witherspoon and Austin Nichols.
I fully expect our sophmores to all improve quite a bit this year.
