It's been this way since I joined in 2005.

Well, it's not like they've had a steady run of success lately.

Why bother having sports if we can not go to them and we can not get the games on television?

OO, the frustration that you and I feel, in particular, is because we were around when Rice was at least decently competitive with the big boys. Jess was basically .500 for his career against TexasU, aTm, and LSU. We are so far away from that today that it almost sounds like a joke, No, never could have happened.

Weather looks pretty dour, with thunderstorms and rain forecasted most of the day...if we do get the game in, I'd assume we'll have to drastically improve on our 3.1 YPC statistic. Can't imagine we'll be airing it out during the rain.

Supposedly, when I entered two years ahead of you, we were having a down year.

Well,, that down year has lasted about 6 decades now, with only a few "up" years - and even our "up" years have multiple detractors for failure to maintain.

That's standard for fan message boards, especially ones for teams not winning a lot. Or even ones where the team wins its fair share of games. I'm sure in 2013 there was some of that and we'd all take a CUSA championship right now against anybody (and that was a stronger conference btw). I was criticized for supporting Bailiff too much during most of his tenure, for praising Hatfield and that one guy who coached us for only a season. I don't defend Bloomgren that way because he's been clearly worse. And if it's not his fault, it's gotta be the AD who named him or the President who named the AD. So all fair game, afaiac.

The reality is that the traffic on this board has significantly declined. Certainly a lot due to lack of games, etc. But I think that a lot of folks have given up caring.

RE: Rice vs UTEP
It will be the battle of #11 vs #12 on Saturday at HRS.

That would be #11 and #12 in the Chronicle’s Lone Star College rankings, which ranks the 12 FBS schools in Texas. If you really want to know who is 11 and who is 12, like it matters, here’s the link.

https://www.houstonchronicle.com/texas-s...50392c3f57

BTW, ESPN is showing the Owls with an 84.3% chance of winning and as an 11.5 point favorite in their consensus spread. They must have only watched the 1Q vs. UNT.

Correction. It’s 10 vs 12. TX State is #11.

For once, I'd glad an article is behind the Chronicle's paywall.

I do generally care about the games and lurked these boards for updates and play-by-plays (and tried to contribute if I was watching), but the truth is, I got very disillusioned with the realization that many of the posters on this board care more about a football schedule than a public health crisis, and tended to out-shout those of us who were all for canceling and postponing games, or currently reducing attendance.

I will continue to support and follow Rice athletics, but not in a board wherein pregame and game threads devolve rapidly into toxic and off-topic discussions.

If you think the discussions here are toxic and off-topic, you obviously haven't spent much time around other teams' boards.

Rice fans are almost incredibly more polite and reasonable than fans of any other school I know. I almost think we are too nice on here, so maybe the administration does not get the message what a dumpster fire this is.

Bloomgren is not a terrible football coach--defense and special teams have improved dramatically. But he is wedded to an offensive scheme that simply cannot be made to work with the athletes that Rice can recruit. You need drop-back quarterbacks and big offensive linemen. That's just not who we can get.

It’s a SPORTS forum.

There were threads that debated the covid situation and how to handle it but of course people on here care about the football schedule.

Most of the decline in traffic is because many of us are sick of the whining and complaining....and have absolutely no desire to get into heated debate on the topic. We still very much care about Rice athletics.

And those that have issues with the state of Rice athletics, excuse me, whiners and complainers, don’t care about Rice athletics? Seems to me the decline in traffic here is due to a dramatic drop in the number of those who still care about Rice athletics and are concerned with its current trajectory.

Sure was a lot of whining and complaining in the Bailiff years (and the Hatfield years)...and yet the game threads were several times as long.

All we need is some winning. If we start winning, people will come back. Winning cures just about everything.

I think you got it. We've been losing miserably in football since the 2014 season. The basketball program is equally dismal. All the best players transfer out of both programs.
At the same time, Rice continues to be indifferent towards athletics, spending as little as it possibly can, and being proud of it. The gravy on top of the pile of crap is that we're in a conference that's a terrible geographic fit, playing lowly former FCS schools in the east that no one here gives a damn about. It's a terrible situation, and no one at Rice has the balls to stand up for change. Every year is a painful replay of the one before. There's simply nothing to be excited about. I'm disappointed in myself for not caring like I used to, but I can't help it. It's hard for me to care, when Leebron and the BOT don't even care.

It’s time we go independent and follow the athletics example set by 03-puke Liberty. They would sadly blow us out in football. They play a much more interesting schedule than us. Their alumni actually care.

Wow that’s so disgusting and painful to type out. Too bad Leebron is a sorry excuse for a President.
