Agree 100 percent, JRSec. And that is one, of many, reasons I dislike James Franklin. Good point. The rape rape cover-up was a disaster. It was painful given my family's history with VU goes back to the 1920s.

Conversely, James Franklin got Black Nashvillians "believing in Vandy football," which 1. no previous coach had been able to do and 2. which I strong feel has been helpful to the university I love.

Let me be clear. I am an older white man who has mixed-race, Hispanic, Asian and black family members on both my mother's and father's side of the family. Jim Franklin helped our family "come to grips" with our "diversity as it relates to Vanderbilt football," and I love the man for that.

Does he deserve to be criticized for his flaws? No doubt. I criticize him to this day.

But he did a lot of positives for the university.

Bill, I appreciate your ability to find good, but a rape is a life altering heinous act. Justice in such a matter is greater than football. I'll remind you that the Bind Torture Kill mass murderer was a beloved leader in his Lutheran Church. Just saying!

As a Catholic who has a relative who is 1. a VU student; and 2. is suffering some severe mental health problems and is hospitalized at VUMC for it ... I would ask you and all the others on this message board to cut this Vandy fan a bit of slack for my pro-Vanderbilt views.

Sorry I brought this up, JRSec. I trust you know I strongly respect you and your views of the SEC. You're a good man and appreciate your understanding.

Bill, I wish you and your relative the best. I don't see this as a Vanderbilt issue as much as it is a serious judgment issue of Franklin's. You know I am a rational guy. The issue of the rape cover up would not have arisen if not for the accusation that Franklin was covering up a threatened assault of a different kind. The situations are different but the MO of Franklin's priorities in cases involving his players and possible felony assault charges are the same.

That said I pray things go well with your relative.

Reasonable points, JRSec. Thanks for the kind words. I love our family and we love Vanderbilt University.

I've always appreciated both your constructive criticism of VU and your positive words of the university.

You have always been frank yet fair with your posts on this board and I respect you for that.

Bill

Another decade, another call to kill Penn State football from the keyboard warriors. Yetur Gross Matos took a polygraph test regarding the alleged sexual assault and the test results came back stating that he told the truth. This is also coupled with 68 players saying that they saw nothing inappropriate in the locker room. Humphries was also the person who pulled the knife during the Parsons fight.

That being said, I could care less what happens to Franklin at this point. He's already had other scandals that's he's downplayed,

It's isolated in plain sight, or something. So there is a weird vibe to it, and I felt that way before Sandusky.

As someone who lived 30 minutes from State College for 9 years, and has family who attended PSU, I'll feel free to explain. There is absolutely nothing to do in Central PA, and the area was hit hard by the closure of several steel mills and the collapse of the rail industry. As such, the only things people have to look forward to are Penn State and Pittsburgh Steelers football. This, coupled with Penn State being the flagship for the whole state meant it was not just getting students from Central PA, but from Pittsburgh and Philly as well. With regards to isolation, State College's airport didn't have any major upgrades until the 1990's, and it's in the mountains. It's in the middle of nowhere and isn't close to any big cities except Altoona.

When you're smaller than Wilkes Barre, you're not a big city.

So then we can understand how it sits in the middle of nowhere? And maybe hours away from certain places, but surrounded by nothing. Harrisburg-Hershey might be the closest trip to something having a little pulse, but that’s a 1.5 hr. drive. Altoona is something like a 45 minute drive.

I truly feel for the kids who aren’t commuters at schools like PSU Altoona, UPJ, IUP, and Clarion. It wasn’t an uncommon sight back 15-20 years ago seeing buses and vans from those schools carting around clusters of those schools’ greek systems spending their weekends up at Main Campus partying.

But, even despite all of that, I don’t think it’s fair to place it on the people around those parts as the cause or blame for culture. You can drive around the Lehigh Valley and find many of those same zombies who just bleed for the cause of PSU football.

I wouldn’t trade my University Park years for anything as a student. But ask me every day of the year where I’d actually want to live, and I’d take Mechanicsburg (PA) over that University Park-Altoona-Johnstown area every day.

State College/Center County would be better if at least it was closer to Pittsburgh or Philadelphia or at least was located in a Harrisburg size type of city. But being right in the middle of the state, where there's not much to do and the harsh winters, makes it an undesirable place to live long term at least for me. Some people love it and been there for years. It was just not the kind of place for me and that applies to most college towns. Sure, it's nice when you're between 18-25 but it gets old after that. Now if PSU was in or near Pittsburgh or Philadelphia then it would be different.

RE: Cultists gonna cult
As far as Penn State being cultish, another poster noted that it's weird having a school like that in the Northeast. This is the reason why Penn State wouldn't have worked in the Big East or any Eastern based conference. It was going to be a matter of time before Penn State was going to bail out because it has nothing in common with the former Eastern independents except for maybe West Virginia. It was always going to be an odd arrangement no matter what. Even the ACC from yesteryear was not a good fit for PSU. As much as I hate to type this, Penn State is a SEC school trapped in the Northeast. The type of behavior that fans from Pitt, Temple, Rutgers, Boston College, etc find cultish would be perfectly normal in SEC and Big XII states. This is why Penn State to the Big Ten was inevitable no matter if the Big East caved to Paterno's demands or if he got away in creating an Eastern based conference under his own terms and conditions. The Big Ten offers PSU academic prestige with high research institutions, rabid fan bases in the states of Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin and Iowa (I don't include Nebraska because they were in the Big Eight when PSU was invited). The only geographic conference that made sense and was a cultural fit when the decision was made to join a conference was the Big Ten. This is why I laugh when posters here throw this scenarios about Penn State being the anchor in the Big East, an Eastern based conference and even the ACC.

They feel like a Big 8 school when there isn’t one around anymore for them to be in, personally. But, if that dialogue exists about PSU alternatives, it’s because of Paterno and his (failed) attempts. The Big Ten makes so much more sense now after what it became with PSU in it, as well as PSU’s institutional embracing of the Big Ten, but, there’s always been some intrigue to it. Can a tiger lose its stripes? Could PSU have adapted to something Big East or ACC-like instead of the Big Ten? Who knows.

Nah, Penn State is in its own category. Even Alabama voted for a Democrat over a child molester.

Other entities (not sports team related) that elicit "cultish" followings (whether large or small) in terms of unapologetic and hard-core lovers/fans (I will steer clear of religion and politics here):

The Grateful Dead

Whattaburger

Michael Jackson

Nike

Starbucks

Branson, Missouri
