I work at the Criminal Justice Center in Memphis. I've seen enough weaves and fake nails to last a lifetime. That said it's an interesting place. I don't know if the jail staff and the deputies on site are trained to be unfailingly polite and engaging but I have rarely been treated so cordially.

Almost every single county employee you encounter greets you like you're an important customer. I'm talking all the way from directors and chiefs all the way down to the housekeeping staff. If there is any racism in their hearts they hide it well. I don't believe there is to any great degree though. I say this because I am one of a handful of white people there. These are largely good people with good paying jobs who for the most part just want to work and provide for their families like any other responsible person does.

I am thankful the layoff occurred now rather than right before Christmas after money is spent. I know there are many others that are in a worse position financially than we are. We hadn't been touched by the Covid downturn until last week.
