RE: Graduation rates
I think we’ve been second behind Rice every year in the overall while being tops a few times in football. MT was third overall and #1 in the nation among public universities in football. I wish Rick would put as much effort into winning a conference championship as he does the GSR.

RE: Graduation rates
I dont think any coach recruits based on whose nerdy or who is smartest. Its all just based on who looks like the best football player. The school does have a little bit of say in forcing the players to attend class, but I don't believe academic records for major sports are any kind of real consideration.

At Rice, we have to limit ourselves to those who are smart enough and motivated enough to do the class work. Certainly we are not going to recruit some 5’4” 115 pound kid just because he has a 190 IQ. But within the universe of big, fast, good players we often pass on players who do not also have some smarts.

I once met a kid who had accepted a football scholarship to attend a major school. I asked where he was going to play football. He said, right here. We were at Texas-Arlington. He thought it was the same as UT Austin. He could not have gotten into Rice, even though he had outstanding athletic ability that let him start on the D line at Texas as a freshman.

I know for a fact their were players that just couldn't get into FAU. Outside of Rice the rest of the CUSA schools are probably close to having the same academic profile, but we have had some kids not get into FAU and go somewhere else due to academics. We all have different constraints and who we can target, with Rice having the smallest target to recruit. Having said this #saynotoTroy
