Sun Bowl off

I'm guessing ESPN tries to play the continental games they own for TV content. But the rest other than the NY6 are shaky.

And the number of players opting out will probably be really high.

RE: Sun Bowl off
Of all the bowls not scheduled to be televised by an ESPN channel or ABC, the Arizona Bowl (CBSSN) is the only one that has not yet canceled this season's game.

It's a good guess that some of the bowls that will go on have told their participating conferences that either they have to accept little or no payout this season, or the game will be canceled. Bowls not subsidized by ESPN probably can't make it work financially this year if they have to make big payments to teams.

I’m surprised the Sun Bowl cancelled since it is in Texas. Unless the issue is the conferences itself that caused the cancellation.

Quote:EL PASO, TEXAS (KTSM) — The 87th annual Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl will not be played in 2020, Sun Bowl officials confirmed to KTSM on Monday night.

The news of the cancellation was initially reported by Stadium’s Brett McMurphy. The reason for the game getting canceled is the COVID-19 crisis in El Paso.

“It’s sad, but it’s the best thing we can do for our community (give the COVID-19 situation),” a Sun Bowl official told KTSM.

El Paso is in Texas? Who knew.

In all seriousness, El Paso is closer to San Diego that it is to east Texas. They also have been a much hotter spot for COVID than the rest of Texas.

Spillover from Juarez.

RE: Sun Bowl off
The Sun is one of the few bowls that doesn't rely on visitors to fill the stadium. It's a bowl centered for El Pasoans and it's a year long event from a parade, beauty pageant, golf tournament, basketball tournament to the game on New Year's Eve.

Sure, it's nice if they get a USC vs Florida State matchup but local interest will still be there if it's Boston College vs Oregon State.

Funny thing, people in Juarez are blaming El Paso for spreading COVID-19 there. Juarez residents can't cross to El Paso since mid March but El Paso residents still go there for dental work, shopping, etc. When stores in El Paso ran out of toilet paper and other things in the spring, guess where they went to get those things since the other side didn't get on panic mode shopping?

It's silly to blame each side when it's a worldwide pandemic that was inevitable to hit either city sooner or later.
