The Factory November 18, 2020
Watching the game on television the stadium was indeed a factory. Looks like it was closed for the holidays or whatever.

I haven't watched the WMU/CMU game yet, but what a listless playing field last night in Ypsi.

I think our team was as listless as your screen looked last night.

I don't know what EMU could have done to add some life to scene given the Covid limitations but the excitement factor last night was zero.

When watching games televised from the Factory, I always have a sense that I'm watching an old black and white TV, or like it's the beginning of the Wizard of Oz where everything is black and white, then when Dorothy lands in Oz, you suddenly see things in color.

But it looks better live than on TV especially in sun light.

RE: The Factory November 18, 2020
We've had this discussion (and I've had it within the athletic department) but there is so much more that can be done.

I watched some h.s. highlights from a field which had GRAY track cinder (we'd want to go green, I think) and it didn't look bad. Why?

Gray, as we all know, is a very neutral color. Like our cars. The old joke: Good color for Catholic Priest's car. Red is not (a neutral color). It calls attention to itself. Think of an 80-year old grandma driving a fire engine red car.

So the red cinder tracks while they do take up significant space (I think the our track might be 9 lanes wide) nevertheless with good camera angles the width can be camouflaged if the cinder is not a color which draws attention to itself. And, as suggested, the gray is 'drab' while the red attracts attention. Green is a neutral color because it blends with the green around the playing field.

BTW, I have been in the Miami Dolphins stadium and it has a lot of space between the playing field and the stands. They handled it well. It can be done.

I understand this type of item is something which the department considers when they do their maintenance planning and budgeting. Of course, we lost are big road FB guarantee games so...

I assume the track needs to be replaced every N number of years and when it is done again, I assume the athletic department will consider if changing colors is feasible.

I found it interesting that the Public Address announcer was on duty last night. There wasn't even a public to address!

my high school had a black track - that would blend in better in this case.

lest we forget early renderings of the new athletics building shows the track as being removed from the stadium (before cutbacks changed the plan i suppose)

Your stadium was over built for sure. I'm not sure how big the crowds were in 1987 but Rynearson is a mammoth for the MAC. Now obviously the configuration is different with the track, and the tarps need to be noted... But other than that? TOP NOTCH endzone facility and cool hill with the Convo in the background. The press tower defiantly needs work... Your stadium could be worse! In 2011 it needed accessed and it was. I'd say the track alone keeps it behind other similar MAC stadiums.

Keep the grey, it's unique.
I like the HOF players and years on the stands.
I like the scoreboard, a second wouldn't hurt?
I like the bowl logos on the far sideline.
I like the name factory and the team entrance.
I love the uniforms and embracing of a theme.

Dear UofToledoFans,
When Rynearson was added to in the 1990's, in order to meet NCAA requirements for Division 1 football, stadiums needed to be 30,000 seats. That is why Eastern has what it has. Those requirements were later eased a bit, but many schools in that era did the same as Eastern.

Yes, Ken, I too remember this.

So we got a big FB stadium and a big basketball arena right before the Internet came along to such all of the fans out of the stadiums by putting the games out on the web or even various new cable channels.

If EMU was to do it in say year 2000, both facilities might have been much different.

Hmm. Interesting. Crowds were bigger in the 90's and 2000's for sure. But lots of MAC schools didn't comply with that. Ours included.

This may be re-hash for many here, but here goes.

As we know, the SAPC complex was originally to be TWO phases. I believe the cost that Christian Spears, etc. had was 40M+

It was obvious that getting money for Phase I would be difficult and Phase II virtually impossible.

Where things get difficult is that Phase I was to be the SAPC in the corner (NW) by where the band sits.

There were problems I believe with the soil and it would have added significantly to the cost. So the SAPC was re-designed and built where it is now.

Lest I be wrong, an IPF, with a track, was to be built where the SAPC is now. The outdoor track was to be moved. The new IPF track would replace the one at Bowen. Bowen would have been vacated.

WHAT I would like to have seen, GIVEN that there wasn't to be a Phase II (unless someone hits Powerball and makes a big donation):

1). I would loved to have the field moved SOUTH I guess maybe 20 or 25 yards.

2). That would have allowed the SAPC to be built about 25 yards south of where it is.

That would have made the stadium more 'intimate' especially for those watching the game from the concourse by the Convo.

3). Then redo the track and choose another color, most likely green.

HOWEVER, that would have cost a LOT of money. Moving the field isn't cheap. Moving the track isn't cheap.

And, yes, to UT fans, a second simple scoreboard in the south end zone would be nice.

I wouldn't worry about it. Even P5 schools look like they're playing in a ghost town stadium

I went to the Eastern/Western game last year. The field being so far away from the stands is the biggest issue (or is it just a weird angle?). The gray field is fun. I don't think the track is an issue.

I think it helps w/ gameday atmosphere, gets the teams thinking these aren't just practices

One thought would be to shift the whole field toward the homestands side so the home fans are closer, and create even further distance from the visitors' side to separate them moreso than now. Create a significant homefield advantage.

I was told that moving the field, either north to south say 15 yards (as I prefer) or move it east to west say 5 - 10 yards, is expensive.

It would involve redoing the turf and track.

IF EMU athletics was rich, I would have liked to see:

1). Move the field say 10 - 15 yards to the south,

2). That requires, I believe, redoing the entire playing field (best done at one time when the turf needs replacing).

3). And also requires moving the track outside Rynearson.

4). Then build the SAPC also about 20 -25 yards further south to close off the north end like say Ohio Stadium in Columbus.

So to do them, one has the cost of redoing the playing field, which isn't cheap and building a new track which isn't cheap either. Would requiring seating, etc.

This image shows what EMU was faced with. Not easy... Because of the track, the options are limited.

Yeah...apart from something like a $100 million contribution, the ability to do what truly needs to be done to do it right is not there. I'd guess the whole thing could be done for less than $100 million, but it would likely take a gift that large to convince the Powers That Be to do it.

It is what it is at this point. But if money was not a factor my idea is to lower the field and extend the bleachers towards the field.
