NCAA Blanket Football Waivers due to COVID
Seems to be a bunch of confusion on this that comes up in multiple discussions. Here's a few clarifications directly from the NCAA:

So you don't have to be a senior. This year doesn't count against the standard 5 years to play 4 seasons rule. So that if you play this year, the rule is essentially 6 years to play 5 seasons (including 2020 year and season). And if you sat out this year (pretty sure nobody did this at UC), you have 6 years (including 2020) to complete 4 seasons.

Since this year "doesn't count", nobody uses up their eligibility this year. Anybody who would have used up their eligibility this year under previous rules can come back next year and NOT count against the team scholarship level of 85 (normally). But it sounds like that only applies for one year. After that, the school is back to being limited to 85 including all players under the 6 years to play 5 plan.

RE: NCAA Blanket Football Waivers due to COVID
Football will work itself out as there will just be several more guys after next season who end up like the 2 medical waiver 6th year guys of years past. It’s going to be really interesting to see how this plays out with only 13 scholarships in basketball. Lots of high school kids may have just lost the chance at the D1 level if this is utilized widely among the 347 D1 programs. There will be a trickle down effect.

UC is senior loaded in football and other than Sanders and Wiggins, who is NFL caliber that is likely to leave for sure? I'd love to see a bulk of those seniors comes back for another season. Next years season could even be more special than this year. And maybe I'd get to go to a game!

You may end up seeing a lot of good players ending up at lower tier schools like Murray State just because scholarships they thought were available disappeared when someone decided to stay.

Hypothetically, I can't imagine there is a single freshman in the country in basketball that we have a realistic chance at landing that we'd trade a 5th year of Keith Williams for.

Class of 2016
WR Jordan Jones. A transfer who played in 2017 and 2018. Did not play in 2019. Graduated May 2020 from Arkansas in May 2020. A starter right now. Needs a spring and summer to work with UC´s QBs.
TE Noah Davis. He is not on scholarship right now but is in grad school. Went to Cincy St. Xavier. Didn´t play much for Mich State. Super talent when healthy.
DT Curtis Brooks. 6-2 295 A solid NT-DT in rotation that moves.
J Michael Pitts. Need more sacks. 9.5 career, none this year,
LB Joel Dublanko. An NFL size LB with solid production last 3 years
DL Marcus Brown 6’2 297. Four solid years rotating on DL. He needs another year, please.
J Ethan Tucky. A transfer from Boston College. Every year he gets better. 7.5 career sacks.
RT Darius Harper 6’7 308. Played 27 games for MiamiOH basketball. Should have another football season before he moves to NFL. Right now, he may not be ready. The Bearcat RPO offense helps his blocking. Another local from Dayton Springfield HS. What’s weird is with basketball´s COVID 64 teams playing in a bubble tournament, depth – like with this years Bearcat’s football team – is really important. Let Harper play in the AAC and NCAA basketball Tournaments this year. He can move a lot better than when he was BB C for MiamiOH.

Class of 2017
CB Coby Bryant. Solid 4 years. 6 career ints. 6-1 NFL size.
QB Des Ridder. Only a three year starting QB. COVID year 2021, RS year 2022. Five years starting QB! That means doubling his starts from now. NFL wants to see a longer passing game. Five ints this season. 153 QBR can be much better. 66.7 percent passing completion can be much better.
LB Jarell White. Solid four years. 5’10 205. The NFL team that signs Jarell is smart, lucky, and probably really good anyway. Most NFL teams don´t want DBs shorter than 6’0 tall.
One exception – Jacksonville Jaguars have 5 DB´s under 6´0. Not coincidentally, all 5 went to Temple. From Cincy LaSalle HS. I love it when local 4 star recruits play lights out for the Bearcats.
RB Cam Young walk on RB with size 6’1 205. Has career stats of 2 rushes and 43.5 ypc. It’s not fun to be scout team RB, or a walk on. Like Noah Davis, he won’t be getting a scholarship next year, so what’s the problem. Maybe he can start a RB controversy LOL.
P James Smith. Four great seasons as a punter. Before JS, a good punt was inside the 20. Now a good punt is inside the 10 yard line. Australia is in a complete COVID lockdown. Stay in America bloke, and get a masters.
Etc., etc.

So if you enter the transfer portal like a kid in the recruiting section Jawon Briggs, do you have to play at the same school in the covid year as the following year? I didn't think it mattered, but some thought it did.

I saw that discussion so that's partially why I decided to try to look these rules up. This year is a freebie so he's potentially got 3 seasons left after this one. It seems like the sit-out rule for transfers is very loose (maybe that needs to be someone's next rules project) but he may have to sit out a year wherever he goes. Either way he's still on the 6 year to play 5 seasons (counting the freebie this year) rule so he's got 3 seasons left if he wants to use them.

2 caveats:
1. I'm not sure how an injury season would impact things.
2. He sounds like he might very well be good enough to go pro early. I think for draft purposes, they look at years since original enrollment (another project for someone) so I would think 2020 still counts for their purposes. Point being he might be looking to enter the Draft as early as after next season (2022 NFL Draft) although probably not if he has to sit out next season due to transferring per above.

At least that's my current understanding of the situation.

Makes sense. It would have seemed odd to take a year away from a kid who didn't stay at his school and transferred while awarding one who did. Hopefully we get him. Saw where all the D coaches are following him on twitter so it sounds like they are making the push.

It sounds like a pretty complicated balancing act to me even with exemptions for 1 year against the 85 limit. I didn't count the actual number but for a year anyway there's probably a legit case for everyone who would normally be moving on to stay another year. It sounds like at least at this point, that Wiggins is the only one who may have a shot at going in the first two days of the draft and apparently that's still unlikely at this point. (Sanders and Hudson are underclassmen candidates so they were already eligible to come back next year) Could Wiggins and other late round candidates improve their draft stock with another season?

It's a lot to juggle. From the player's perspective:
1. Where do I stand with regard to graduation?
2. What are my NFL prospects now and next year?
3. What are my non NFL job prospects like?
4. Am I interested in a graduate degree?
5. Do I want to play more college football?

For the coaches: Next year could be great but am I setting the program up for a major rebuild the year after that? Every guy that sticks around and plays is taking playing time from a younger guy who may be getting tired of waiting (even if he also has potentially more time on the back end). Will backups transfer out thereby compounding the problem? The scholly situation is fine for a year, but the 85 total limit may get crazy tight after that if we have more than a few guys taking full advantage of the 6 years to play 5 after this year.

I agree, but it's a tricky business especially when it comes to kickers and punters. Just being in the right place at the right time can make all the difference between a long career and being done with playing football. And a lot of times for those that stick it isn't at the place where they started.

Obviously, James will decide things for himself, but if it was me the first question I'd be asking myself is whether I've learned and mostly mastered everything the staff at UC has to teach me?

If so, it's probably time to take a shot at the NFL whether it's as a late rounder or more likely as a free agent. The downside is that if you don't make it at that first stop, you are presumably largely on your own as far as coaching and practice goes just waiting for a team to have an opening and request you come in right away for a tryout. And if that call doesn't come, you will wait and hope for an invite to someone's training camp next year. Clearly, the financial implications could be huge. Do I have savings or do I need to take a non-football job to get by? What kind of job can I get in this age of COVID especially when my employer knows my goal is to have to quit at a moment's notice and/or take a leave next year to go to training camp and ideally not come back to that job. Will that allow me the time necessary to continue to develop my craft of punting with no practices to attend or coaches to help out? Or is that a recipe for skill regression especially when it comes to consistency? Or can I find and afford an independent punting coach?

So if there is something you want or need to do educationally and/or you feel like there's more you can learn and improve at punting-wise while at UC, I think that's an option you have to strongly consider.

Etc., etc.

Yea, I’d be nervous keeping too many Seniors for an extra year at the expense of developing some of the younger, and in a lot of cases, more talented players that need experience.

I would try to focus on a select few only, but there is no need to keep every Senior. I think Harper is one example that is a good candidate as I think he would potentially improve his draft status as well as help the team, especially if there is a chance we lose Hudson early (no idea if that’s the case).
