Georgia Southern @ Army
GS currently the slight underdog in this game, but the big story is that the Eagles are going up against arguably their most beloved ex coach since Paul Johnson.

This will be a good game, as long as Georgia Southern brings their A game...

I expect a physical, low-scoring game of turnovers and field position.

I've watched Army play a few times this season. They are better on offense than we are IMHO so being a slight underdog to them is about right I think.

GS should win this game convincingly. Army overrated this year.

I'd agree if our offense wasn't so inconsistent.

Yes. He left in our final season as an FCS school so Army was still a clear step up. We also had a new AD that prompted our move up, and even though Monken supported going FBS, there were other things they didn't see eye-to-eye on. This match up wouldn't have happened if that AD was still here.

He was at Navy with Paul Johnson and is familiar with military tradition at service academies. To me, it's pretty obvious how enamored he is with it and was one of the biggest factors of why he left IMO. That and a $1 million/yr raise

In what he called one of the most agonizing decisions of his life, Jeff Monken on Tuesday accepted the job of head football coach at the United States Military Academy.

“When a four-star general looks you in the eye and says, ‘I believe you can make a difference,’ it’s hard to say no,” Monken said Tuesday afternoon. “You have no idea how I agonized and the tears I shed.

“This should be a reason to celebrate, but I have a heavy heart. I truly love Georgia Southern. I bleed blue and white ... I feel like it’s my alma mater.”

A couple reasons.... we were still FCS at the time and they more than doubled his salary. He had also coached with PJ at the Naval Academy and had a history and love for the men and women at the academies. He also said upon leaving that his family had a long history of being in the military and serving their country. He felt that his coaching at an academy was his way of leading future officers and serving his country in a different way. I don't think his relationship with out then AD "caused" him to leave, but it wasn't something that would have made it difficult to leave. If the offer had not come from Army or Navy, I don't think he would have left when he did.

Maybe you guys can lure him back, someday, somehow. Sounds like he's a true blue GaSo guy.

coaching a military academy was his dream job. He's job a job there for as long as he wants it.

If it wasn't for Covid, we likely would have never seen them on our schedule.

Monken really is one of the most "True Blue" coaches we have had in a long time (not counting Lunsford).

He was the reason for that dominating 2014 offensive line. When he left, the historical flexbone left Georgia Southern as well.

RE: Georgia Southern @ Army
We would have an easier go of it convincing Paul Johnson to come out of retirement than convincing Monken to leave a military academy. We might could match Monken's salary but Sir PJ probably doesn't need the money. Honestly, that would be the only reason we would ever return to the flex. I don't see Lunsford making that switch, even if he did work for Monken when he was here. Would love to see it happen though.

Unfortunately, our pace of play and inability to come away with TD's in the red zone keeps our scoring low. Limited possessions means limited points. It's part of the reason we have played soo many close games.

RE: Georgia Southern @ Army
There's an excellent analysis of our game here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8svOVB1UhI

It is from Army's point of view, but the analysis is pretty spot on. The majority of the talk concerning us is from 20:00 marker forward. To summarize what they said: We (army) know we can't pass and GS's run defense is very stout. They predict Army victory 27-24 in a nailbiter. Their (GS) triple option works from the outside in while ours works from the inside out. If we don't deviate from the ground and pound traditional flex like we did at Tulane, we should have a better chance of winning.

I found it interesting that they mention Monken's love for GS is well known throughout Army, and that is the reason his contract has a clause that states that they will never schedule us. They mentioned this COVID year as an anomaly and it just worked out that we both had an opening at the same time and decided to make a change for this year.

That's interesting about the clause in his contract. I knew that he had said he didn't wanted to play us because it would be tough for him. But did not know he wrote it into the contract. That's kinda cool.

No kidding. That settles the question about why he won't plays us. I'm a Monken fan, so to me this shows how much respect he has for GS and he was telling the truth about how hard it was to leave. But, I would still love to play them though, every couple of years like we did with UGA. I'd be ok never playing UGA again to make this happen, honestly.

27-24 sounds about right though. I was thinking more like 20-17. I still think we can win this.
