It was only a few minutes long, but some thoughts:
Ledarrius is a remarkable shooter, who comes out firing from 3 and midrange. And hitting several in a row! He pairs well with a long athletic brother – the 2 get each other enthused.
We could really use David “Day-Day” Sloan. His JUCO all-America stats are awesome, although the K State stats were not so impressive (neither were Ge'lawn Guyn's D1 stats before he got to ETSU). He controls things well from the point. He’s the best, most confident point out there. And he threw in a ¾ court shot at the buzzer. Hope that appeal works out.
That said, Freshman Niblack has a good range of skills and a similar game. Freshman Truth Harris is an awfully impressive athlete in the dunk line. Shay says both freshmen have more athleticism than Sloan. Sloan and Niblack match up in practice like Tisdale and Williamson and went toe to toe. It could really help both to have a strong, skilled opponent to go head to head against every day.
Weber didn’t start or show much in the very brief scrimmage, but he’s got skills and athleticism in the dunk line.
In the paint, Silas Adheke looked like the only guy with much muscle.
Don’t think that I saw #12 Monsanto or #15 Amaefule out there, but it was hard to tell who was who. Who was wearing #30?? Or #10?? Those numbers are not on the roster! I have heard that Amaefule is looking like a special player who will get PT, and that Damari's scoring is off the charts this year.
I can see why the coaches have been saying we need more defense. These guys have got a long way to go before they’re a SoCon contender. There's a long way to go before they’re a team. Guards seem further along than the front court.
Coach Turner Battle (was he the MAC POY at Buffalo?) likes the talent level, but says that there is a long way to go before they can communicate like last year.
Announcers cited a quote from Forbes that Greg Heiar is the best at player development that he’s ever worked with, the best at helping guys improve their level of play.
Asked what the team’s strong point might be this year, Vonnie says that there are a lot of high energy guys on the team. Covid not only has cost the team some practice time, but has made it harder for the team to hang out and get to know each other off the court.
Shay seemed at ease in the interview setting. But he did say that it was a “shocker” to be picked third in the SoCon with so few experienced guys back. Lots of talented new players here.
