Sure sounds like a "Hoosiers" momeny from Siddle:
On building a foundation
As we continue to build a program up, I like to talk to my guys about, when you’re building a house, the foundation has to be rock-solid and that’s what we’re focusing on, and I think that we are putting together a really nice foundation — something that we can lean on and stand on. Our guys are fighting really hard. I have guys playing almost 40 minutes a game, my rotation is very short and they’re giving me everything that they have on each possession.
On expanding the rotation
I want our rotation to be a lot deeper and bigger than what it is right now, but in these games, they’re possession games and I have to be able to trust the guys I have out on the court, and to be honest, I’m just not at that point with some guys right now. We’ll see; we have a long week ahead of it with practice and we’re going to try to get those guys better and ready to produce for us, and hopefully, we can get a couple more guys in our rotation.'

Building a house takes everyone, you can’t have the plumber doing electrical work. Forcing guards to do big mans work is essentially doing just that.

You can certainly get a job as a DI coach and give it a shot. I'll stick with Siddle for the time being though.

You can't judge the house he is building in the first few weeks. He's also faced an unprecedented shut down of atheltics, and losses of players we've never seen at UNCW. Estime, Steere, Carr, Phillips, Sims and several games without Gadsden then Bowen. That first five is a starting five for a DI school. I'd give any coach a first year pass under these curcumstances.

To be fair, Siddle said used the analogy of laying the foundation. If you haven't done construction, this may come as a surprise, but electricians and plumbers don't lay foundations.
I think his analogy holds up. He was talking about building a foundation, "something we can lean and stand on". We're not ready for specialists.
Without knowing how any of the guys prepare and practice, if [insert player] isn't prepared (e.g. doesn't watch film, lift, know the playbook, etc) or doesn't practice with effort, then playing them out of necessity devalues the coach's message. I'd also guess that sitting when there is an obvious need would encourage the players to hold each other accountable.

Two of those losses were HIS recruits and one of which was VERY predictable

Who cares? We've gone through this ad nauseum. He was trying to recruit during the beginning of these shut downs. No face to face recruiting, no visits, no chance to check out players. Nothing. He had one scholly for a big man, and went after a guy he has a relationship with. He was left with slim pickings in the post by McGrath. And the ONE post player who played at all last year, transferred out.
The bottom line is exactly what he wrote and what we thought. He expects championship level play. And if he isn't getting it, the players don't hit the court. Period. That's how it's going to be, and I have no problem with it at all.

I’m willing to give him a pass on everyone but Steere. That was a bad decision, IMO. The others though are just a lot of bad luck.
Hopefully all of our bad luck is spent and things get right from here out.

It’s bad that we lost Sims in all of this too. Heck, if he was stilll rolling and Shy was back, the Hawks would be nearly impossible to defend. We still need numbers and improved front court play to be at the top. I really hope Shy can play this weekend!!

JMU is a talented squad this year too. Mark Byington has so far done a fantastic job quickly turning that program into a conference contender.

Nooooooooo, how could it be, new coaches can't have success right away with covid and not being able to visit recruits and implement a new system this is next to impossible.

I mean, let's not forget that Siddle had success out of the gates too, only it was in non-conference play. We all understand the circumstances that have played a huge role in our struggles of late.

Just wanted to make sure everyone understands how silly those excuses sound. Yes, we have the injury factor here lately.

Our talent level has not changed. The difference for us has all been coaching.
Started off with two bad losses to Norfolk St and Morgan St and has really done an amazing job of turning them into a team over the last 45 days. We were a #300 Sagarin team last year with similar talent.
Hopefully I'm not jinxing us. To say he is loved at JMU so far in an understatement. Seems like a class guy. Exciting brand of basketball as well.

Interesting, i know there were many in those parts that were not happy with the hire. Easy to like now :)

While I thought he was an upgrade over our worst coach in history, I was underwhelmed by the hire. I thought he would get us into the top of the CAA. I was actually hoping for another coach from the same conference - Wes Miller, but I think he would of cost a lot more, and not sure Wes was interested in a somewhat lateral move.
As excited as we now are with Mark - as a head coach he's not reached the NIT or NCAA. So basically we are at a so far so good stage.
