ETSU?

Sure, why not. The reason I selected TT was that its more centrally located to the heart of the other schools.

So back to the damn topic....

The thing that makes the most sense is like someone from EKU posted, aligning themselves with similar schools after EKU kinda went against the OVC grain.

Also, UCA may very well be a bridge for a couple, if not all the Louisiana schools from the Southland to move.

Some on here are way too young to remember the old Gulf South Conference. Even in D2, it was considered one of the premier NCAA football conferences in the country at any level. The ASUN may be trying to put something together that replicates that to the best of their abilities.

Their is tremendous history in some sort of way with all the schools involved, especially the ones I know about that haven't been publicly mentioned yet. So y'all can speculate, nash, and not understand all you want, but you have to know how the schools involved think.

How about we see what really happens, and then talk about what's going on.....
So you're thinking D-I GSC, like how the Summit is D-I NCC. Then bring in UWF and Valdosta St.(they don't have their own stadium though). If you can get some other big name FCS like SE La., Nicholls, McNeese St. that would look like a pretty powerful FCS conference.

I think the goal is to convince:
- ETSU
- Chattanooga

to jump on board with:
- EKU
- UNA
- JSU
- KSU

...for a core six.

Apparently they have UCA on board, but they’d be an outlier. Not sure how UCA plays into the end game. Will they go after LA schools or OVC TN schools to bridge to Arkansas?

You do have some D2 schools in the footprint.

Lets look at the public schools in the area with football from D1 and D2.

Alabama A&M
Alabama State
Arkansas Tech
Bethune-Cookman
Florida A&M
West Florida
Albany State
Valdosta State
West Georgia
Murray State
Grambling State
Southern
SE Louisiana
Jackson State
Central Missouri
Missouri S&T
Truman State
Missouri State
SE Missouri State
Fayetteville State
UNC-Pembroke
Winston-Salem
NC A&T
NC Central
Western Carolina
Youngstown State
West Chester
The Citadel
South Carolina State
Austin Peay
East Tenn.
Chattanooga
Tenn.-Martin
Tenn. State
Tenn. Tech
Norfolk State
William & Mary

There are others that are large ;like non football schools and privates that can help fill in places.

If I'm going to place a bet, it would be

ASUN football
Central Arkansas, Eastern Kentucky, JSU, UNA, KSU, Chattanooga, West Florida, SE Louisiana, Nichols St.

But what do I know?

The OVC will pull in Western Illinois

The Southland will pull in Tarleton State and 1 Lone Star school to be named later.

Both conferences will be fine

Kennesaw St & North Alabama from ASUN
Eastern Kentucky & Jacksonville St from OVC
Central Arkansas from Southland
+
Missouri St from MVFC
Western Carolina & ETSU from SoCon

Footprint is similar to the SEC East but a little tighter. All public schools, no more than 2 schools from a single conference, and no more than 2 schools from a single state - I think this gives the conference a chance to create its own identity instead of just a rehash of ASUN/OVC/SoCon. Everyone gets a geographic rival for Thanksgiving weekend - Central Arkansas/Missouri St, North Alabama/Jacksonville St, Kennesaw St/Western Carolina, and Eastern Kentucky/ETSU.

MVC basketball have been weakend without Wichita State. ASun could be a two bid league quicker than MVC right now if the right schools were added like Murray State, Chattanooga, East Tennessee State and others.

Chattanooga

Kennesaw St.

Central Arkansas
Stetson

But this proposed conference doesn’t seem much more competitive “face value” than their current conferences.

This league would be more competitive than the OVC.

I don't think Stetson wants to play football in the ASUN.

I got the sense EKU had the actual infrastructure for FBS/Sun Belt, but location had a lot to do with Coastal getting the nod (as evident by the initial stadium issue). It must suck to get a no and have the resources available to operate at FBS, but no conference takers. Liberty was right to challenge the rule, and I think it makes it easier for others to bypass politics and location bias. I fully expect at least EKU to jump up to FBS.

Liberty is kind of unique in its ability to schedule as an independent. It also has BYUesque long term goals

I just don't think EKU could pull off financially what Liberty has done in terms of upgrades and being able to put together exciting schedules for their fanbase.

Army, BYU, and Liberty are really the only ones that can make independence work long term. You can count ND too I guess but really they are ACC minus 3 games. NMSU, UMass, and UConn don't desire to be independent but it's better than downgrading to FCS at this time.

But what does FCS do for the fans if that version tanks with regard to talent/style. That FCS can’t get or keep FBS kids who don’t want to wait a year? I get the impression the quality of FCS is going to go downhill fast, and if you’re a school who got by on transfers, you’re not special or unique anymore.

I don’t know if OVC football does it enough for EKU fans, but, I suspect that even as an independent, EKU can get fat enough off of a temporary independent schedule (the more the better for them) and pick up other games against regional teams in the SBC, CUSA, and MAC. I also suspect that if there is some shifting between CUSA and SBC whenever or for whatever reason, I like EKU over Liberty getting a spot.

I agree that location works against them, but, yikes...that’s not fair for EKU to not get to tey FBS if they feel they want to. And if they want to, they should get to be, imo. Same went for Liberty.

When Eastern Kentucky was Division I-AA in the 1970s and 1980s (under Coach Roy Kidd), it was a national power. There is some history with that program.

Of course. I just don't think EKU wants to do what Liberty is doing. However by joining the Atlantic Sun, they now have that option should they chose, until the FCS football conference gets created

Are we all wildly overreacting to Gumbart overpromising again?

The non-paywalled part:

Quote:If the Atlantic Sun Conference wants to talk to Jacksonville State about joining the league, then athletics director Greg Seitz is willing to listen.

But, that's a long way from Jacksonville State deciding to abandon the Ohio Valley Conference for the ASUN.

So maybe it's not a done deal

So it's just Gumbart reaching out to potentially disaffected schools who wanted to play FB in spite of COVID but have no interest in actually leaving their current conferences. Sounds about right.

Gumbart’s the one commissioner who reads this board too. He enjoys watching all of us lose our minds.
