PSU take,

While I agree with the arithmetic...there are schools who could come out and pay more guaranteed money (USC).

Yep. If he thinks he has a decent landing spot lined up he can negotiate a reduced buyout from the school for the ability of both parties to cut bait without pain.

Heck, maybe he could go back to Vandy where he had success...Derek Mason has been an unmitigated disaster since replacing Franklin in 2014 and I think they are paying him close to 3 million to lose lots of SEC games.

RE: 2020 Coaching Carousel
I think coaching turnover this year will be limited. To many athletic depts. short on money, and i think the craziness of all of this is going to buy most coaches an extra year. Franklin's record at Psu is something like 80 and 38 and he's finished top 25 6 of 8 years. I'd be surprised unless there is some real malfeasance they make a move this year.

Clay Helton is 3-0 right now and the rest of their schedule sucks. I doubt they lose a game. They aren't gonna get rid of him to get winless Franklin and have to pay him a bunch of money in a year where they aren't making any money either.

If people start discussing it and talking like we are inevitably going back to 4-8 type years, then I agree. Otherwise this isn’t likely going away. Like Fick said, if you have a successful program you are going to have this type of buzz, whether it’s the Head Coach, a coordinator, or position coaches. I agree we should enjoy it, but no reason we can’t also discuss what the future will bring at the same time.

Talking about the future of the program is one thing but constantly speculating about which P5 du jour Fick will leave us for is another. I'm enjoying the ride and feel great about our coach who signed a long term deal like no one before him. You choose to continue to discuss it. I will not.

I think one difference is, I don’t fear the time when/if we lose Fick. I feel confident that Fick built the program the right way and also created a roadmap for future coaches to build off.

Since I don’t fear what happens when he leaves, discussing his future isn’t a problem and I can still enjoy everything we have accomplished and will continue to accomplish.

Perfectly fine if Freeman replaces Fickle. However, if Dominos fall and Fickle leaves for OSU... does he take Freeman with him?

He would take Freeman, but he also knows his desire to coach and has talked with him about the right job and I think UC would be one of those, so he'd probably leave Freeman behind if he became the head coach at UC. But he won't leave him to just be DC here. DC at O$U or Head Coach at UC for Freeman.

I'm not sure Day would want to go to Detroit. I do think he goes to NFL at some point, but not sure Detroit is the one he'd want.

As a Detroit fan...there is no chance Detroit would go for another unproven NFL commodity. If they hired Ryan Day it would be a complete and utter disaster, regardless of his abilities, and I just don't see the Lions being THAT dumb.

The road is littered with successful college head coaches who could not make the transition. Two different animals. Basketball very similar.

I don't think Ryan Day is as hot a property as some think.

I think the jury's still out on him until he can get past the "still winning with Urban's players" stage. Thus, I feel that he's going to hold onto his job with a death grip until if/when he starts racking up the wins with his own players.

Then he can write his own ticket... if he even wants to.

None of us know anything about the guy or what would motivate him (or any coach for that matter). That being said I doubt Auburn targets a guy who has never worked as a coach or personally recruited much south of the Ohio River.

I've heard many national reporters identify him as a premier coach. In addition he's got a lot of respect in NFL circles from his time with Chip Kelly. I understand what you're saying but the reason they hired him was because they could keep the national recruiting infrastructure they had in place. If he wants an NFL job it's waiting for him but there's only a handful of NFL jobs better than his job.

As much as I dislike OSU I hope he stays a long time because as long as they're recruiting nationally there's better regional talent for us.

The "hasn't won with his own players" argument is nice for college where you have to recruit guys. But Day's next step isn't another college job, it's the NFL. And aside from wooing a free agent or two (who most likely will go to the highest bidder regardless), the players are never really "his" in the NFL. If anything, the proven ability to win with somebody else's players is an asset at that level.

I don’t buy that argument. Ryan Day was recruiting a lot of the Offensive players as the Coordinator and QB coach since 2017. He is also the reason Justin Fields transferred to Ohio State. If that is the perception about Day, it makes no sense.

Now, whether he can win it all and be an Elite coach on Saban, Dani, or even Urban Meyer remains to be seen, but it’s clear he is a great coach and does a great job developing QB’s. Whether that translates to the NFL is also a question mark, but I don’t buy the “jury is out” line on Day.

RE: 2020 Coaching Carousel
Ryan Day is the real deal. I was sold after his first year. I think they got a bit hosed against Clemson. Maybe my Buckeye bias but they would have given LSU a much better game than Clemson without a doubt in my mind.

Also his recruiting has been even better than Urban thus far somehow. Check out their ‘21 or ‘22 so his players will be just fine.

With all that said I am not sold on Ohio State’s team this year. D stinks right now. Dobbs was also an elite college running back and is much missed.
