Tennessee didn’t have state income tax beyond investment dividends and capital gains.

Perhaps that is why he kept his house and domicile there during the term of that huge payout versus paying state income tax in Alabama or somewhere else? Just sayin’.

You must live in a state not just own a residence. Things like employment, where you vote, where your cars are registered are important. Since it was very public knowledge that he worked in AL claiming TN as his tax residence would not fly. I make sure to be out of OH 5 months to claim FL.

MST from The University of Cincinnati.

Nope. Legal domicile is determined by where what you consider to be your permanent residence is located as long as you intend to return. Intent to return is kind of a hard standard to nail down.

You have no idea how many people still have Florida drivers licenses who haven’t lived there in a while and who rent their property.

Having a home in TN while working as a temporary analyst for peanuts would pass the smell test. Betcha he just turned in his TN DL when he moved to Arkansas State.

To be a defensive position coach!

I mean, first off, Bielema better not put any SMU defensive tape on after the ink is dry on that one lol

Not necessarily. You can do whatever you want until they come after you, but it's a much, much more tangled web.

Regardless, the federal bite with all the disallowed deductions, added surtaxes, et. al still takes a lot if your income runs into the 7 figures. Ask anyone who owns an S Corp.

RE: 2020 Coaching Carousel
They won’t come after you for that. It would be the State of Alabama that would have to do it and they’d have to establish intent of permanent domicile. That is called a lay down hand in euchre if you have to defend it.

If that’s what he did, he pocketed about $100k a year at the top tax bracket of most states just on his buyout from Tennessee.

This isn’t some novel idea. Look at where so many in the media, sports and entertainment call their legal domicile regardless of where they also reside. (Florida is a biggie). Even Donald Trump. Reason is no state income tax and 4-5% on big $$ adds up.

Really solid D as they gave up only 31 points a game in 2020.

RE: 2020 Coaching Carousel
Hang in there Butch. You'll get it rollin' in Year 4.

Quote:Former Tennessee Vols head coach Butch Jones is having a tough time with his coaching staff at Arkansas State.

Jones, who agreed to become the Red Wolves’ head coach after working for three seasons as a “special assistant” at Alabama, is already on his third offensive coordinator at Arkansas State despite being on the job less than a month.

Former Houston head coach Major Applewhite was initially set to serve as Jones’ offensive coordinator, but then he quickly left for the same job at South Alabama.

A.J. Milwee was next on the list. But shortly after agreeing to become Jones’ offensive coordinator, he bolted for a job at Texas on Steve Sarkisian’s staff.

Keith Heckendorf, who was Arkansas State’s offensive coordinator in 2019 and 2020, is now set to serve as the Red Wolves’ offensive coordinator in 2021 under Jones.

This means Jones essentially told Heckendorf he wasn’t the guy he wanted to lead his offense and then he had to go back and beg him to return to Arkansas State when the first two offensive coordinator hires didn’t work out.

If that’s not bad enough, Jones released this ridiculous statement when Heckendorf agreed to return.

COACH HECKENDORF IS AN INDIVIDUAL THAT I HAVE KNOWN FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS DATING BACK TO HIS DAYS AT NORTH CAROLINA. I HAVE ALWAYS HAD A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF RESPECT FOR HIM AS A PERSON, A MENTOR AND A COACH, AND HAVE FOLLOWED THE SUCCESS OF HIS OFFENSES FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS. EVERYWHERE I HAVE COACHED, COACH HECKENDORF HAS ALWAYS BEEN ON THE TOP OF MY LIST, INCLUDING FROM DAY ONE WHEN I TOOK THE JOB AT ARKANSAS STATE, AND WE ARE VERY EXCITED TO HAVE HIM LEADING OUR OFFENSE.

That’s an odd statement to make after giving the job to two other people first. But it’s Butch Jones, so odd isn’t surprising.

By the way, that’s not the only staffing issue Jones has had during his short time at Arkansas State.

Football Scoop reported on Wednesday that Jones lost his strength coach Brian Johnson to California.

Johnson was actually a pretty good hire by Jones. He has extensive NFL and SEC experience. I was surprised Jones lured him to Arkansas State, but I’m not surprised he quickly jumped at the opportunity to leave Jones behind.

Maybe things will end up working out for Butch at Arkansas State, but it’s certainly not off to a good start for him.

Maybe Alabama Special Assistant Wasn't So Bad

Lot of chatter out there that Tennessee is looking at trying to lure PJ Fleck from Minnesota. Interesting departure from their previous hires.

Don't think i'd see LF going to Minnesota, but Marcus Freeman would be an interesting candidate. Who knows.

Guy with a hyper inflated idea of who he is, the most ridiculous schticky stuff, and who wears garish outfits with way too much reliance on school colors.

Seems to me he is the perfect UT hire 03-lmfao

PJ definitely seems like the type to go shirtless at a Lady Vol's game

Only difference is he's taking one of the GAs home after.
