Most of these guys take the massive cash out and roll the dice. If he never works another day he still likely has more $$ than he’ll ever spend in his lifetime. It’s a no brainer for almost all coaches.

Heck, CLF came this close to doing it to move to a dumpster fire in freaking East Lansing.

I think we're getting close to the pay grade that we can even that out by promising years. 3.5 million with periodic raises over the next 20 years is better than 5 million/5.

Luke Fickell, Cincinnati coach: Michigan could use him, but that ain't happening for the former Ohio State player and assistant. South Carolina is a fit but not the fit. When Fickell departs Cincinnati, it's going to be for a place where he can win a conference championship. That's how good a job he's done for the Bearcats. Winning the SEC East is a heavy lift for anyone not coaching at Florida or Georgia. Look for Fickell's name to surface if Texas parts with Tom Herman.

I agreed with his take until the last sentence. Hard to see Texas going with another Osu former assistant who has had a similar rise in the AAC. Not to mention he really hasn't recruited Texas/Oklahoma.

Signs that Coach Fickell is considering the Michigan job

He tries to say the words in Hail to the Victors
without grimacing.
He buys all the books by John U Bacon.
He is the guy who broke the story that when Coach Lloyd Carr was fired, he recommended that the UM players transfer.
He looks for a really big house in Ann Arbor with a swimming pool.
He hold a family vote

The one name I keep hearing around the Texas job is "Urban Meyer." I don't know/don't care how realistic it is that Urban returns to coaching or, if he does, that it would be at Texas, but that's who the Longhorn fans have their sights set on.

Personally, I don't think it's likely that Texas fires Hermann this year...unless they have a back-room deal done with Urban. Tom Hermann has probably done ***enough*** this year...especially with COVID...to keep his job at Texas. I'll be surprised if they move on from him at this point.

Man, I say this in all sincerity: I don't care how much you offer me, I would never coach at Xavier or Ohio State. Obviously that's easier to say when a few million dollars isn't staring me in the face, but if Michigan is offering CLF a job he of course has similar suitors that he could jump out without the sourness of coaching in Ann Arbor.

Does Fickell feel the way about the Big Blue that many of us feel about our rivals? I dunno. But that might legitimately be the one big boy job Fick could take that would actually hurt his chances of ever landing the Ohio State gig.

If he leaves, you hire Marcus Freeman without thinking twice about it and the momentum likely continues another 2-3 years.

Hey, don't we have a player on our team who's dad happens to be pretty good at coaching football?

I kid, I kid...

RE: 2020 Coaching Carousel
I guess just don't understand why Fickell would leave for some dumpster fire of a program when he can sit at Cincinnati and wait perfectly content and get the same offer in 3-5 years from one of the two schools he'd love to be at. It doesn't make any sense. And if he goes to Michigan, Texas, [insert school] and it doesn't work out, he'd end of blowing any chance of coaching at ND or OSU. Meanwhile he can keep racking up 10-11 win seasons at Cincinnati and momentum will work in his favor when Day or Kelly go to the NFL.

Again, no money in front of us right now, but I agree. His end game is OSU. If that seems unlikely he probably wants a ND or Penn State type of job. I tend to doubt Michigan would be his final destination. I'd argue he's more likely to land one of those first 3 gigs by staying at Cincinnati and hoping Day or Kelly leave in the next 3-4 years (Brian Kelly is becoming one of the longest tenured coaches in CFB now) than by starting a rebuild at UM. But I dunno, probably just being naive.

Yep.

We all saw the interviews Fickell gave before last year's OSU game. He was noticeably uncomfortable about playing against Ohio State. That's ok at Cincinnati, but not at Michigan.

I know Fickell is capable of growth. The article from the Columbus paper someone posted yesterday made it clear how much Fickell grew in his media relations between 2011 and 2017. But growth is different from changing the man's DNA.

At 59, I think the window for the NFL has closed on BK. The trend is to hire younger coaches: McVay, Taylor (I know), Brian Flores, Kliff Kingsbury, Sean McDermott, Matt Rhule, Matt Nagy, Kevin Stefanski, Matt LaFleur, Joe Judge, Adam Gase, Kyle Shanahan, Mike Vrabel...

With the next round you'll see more young coaches- Robert Salah, Kellen Moore and of course Eric Bienemy (who at 51 will be the old man in the new group of coaches).

And he loses the vote 32 to 1 as the kids downloaded Dominion Voting Software.

I'd say either Texas or USC. Then again, wasn't it reported last year the Chancellor of USC refuses to hire Meyer because of the whole ordeal involving one of the assistant's slapping around his wife?

Listening to 97.1 the Fan in Columbus right now. Austin Ward from Letterman Row (OSU website) was on, and he's covered Luke for a long time. Said the fact that his name has been mentioned with the South Carolina job search is laughable, as he would never take that job. Also said he doesn't see him entertaining Michigan, but to watch out for Penn State if James Franklin ends up on the hot seat.

I agree. I see OSU, ND, Penn State in that order. I don't see Fickle leaving for a program unless he can conceivably win a national title. (75K+ stadium, good boosters/fan base and no 800lb gorilla in the way).

SC is 2nd in their state to Clemson and way behind in the SEC. A dark horse I could see in Texas. Unlimited resources in a talent rich state and an pretty easy run to the playoffs. Its a mess, but I think he could turn it around. I just don't see Michigan. The guy bleeds scarlet and gray. As good as that job could be, I just don't think he could go in and play OSU every year.

Too bad UC is not still in the BE, because he could be in the playoffs this year.

the only way you don't hire freeman on the spot is if you can get harbaugh. it's the ultimate redemption story. upend big state while doing so at big state's second biggest rival

RE: 2020 Coaching Carousel
Yea, I can’t imagine Fick would leave for South Carolina type jobs. That is a huge rebuild and it’s not really in his wheel house in terms of recruiting. He really has a better shot at reaching his goals here.

I am concerned about Penn State but I’m hoping Franklin sticks around another year and can turn it around. The problem with that is he is apparently struggling to get the top Pennsylvania players to commit to Penn State, which doesn’t bode well moving forward. It would be nice if he could stick around long enough for the CFP to expand, as that is one less reason Fick would need to leave.

In the end, as long as we can keep either Fick or Freeman I think the momentum continues on its current trajectory.
