Yes, in addition to the 9 years of high salary, Muschamp got an additional $6.3 million as UF buyout, and SC owes him $13 million.

The last 10 years have been a Boon for the Muschamp finances. For the teams he coached not so much.

Nine years of salary and $20m in buyouts, all for an overall record of 56 - 51.

That's not exactly how it works. Most buyouts are reduced when the salary of a new job is added. If the new salary doesn't add enough then the old buyout keeps it at a pre agreed upon level. So Muschamp may not have motivation, financially speaking, to take a head coaching job and if he takes an analyst's job with a network that salary won't count against him (unless the contract stipulates that). I can see him returning to Mack but not immediately, unless Mack pays him below the minimum that allows him to stick South Carolina for the full amount.

It's tough to win at South Carolina.
Lou Holtz couldn't do it, Spurrier was able to produce three 11 win seasons but couldn't sustain that momentum, winning has never come easily in Columbia.

RE: Muschamp fired at South Carolina
I can't speak for Hugh Freeze (or anyone else) but South Carolina is not the place I consider for the perfect opportunity to get back to the big time. I'm not saying Freeze won't go to USC, but USC isn't the situation that I would be holding out for.

From USC's perspective, they not only need a home run but a grand slam. Georgia and Florida look great for the near future (as they often do) but they have arguably the top school as their non-conference rival every year that I'm sure they are tired of seeing be more successful than they are. If I were at USC, I'd do everything in my power to get Hugh Freeze as I think he'd have the best shot at taking USC to be the caliber of program that can compete with Clemson and the SEC but I just don't think it is reciprocated.

[Caveat: I don't think Freeze is going to be a lifer at Liberty. I have to say this before a hundred people tell me how he's leaving. We know he won't be around forever so you don't have to be a-holes about telling us things we already know.]

Freeze has proven he can coach and he coached in the SEC (Mississippi) but there's always the fear of the cloud of recruiting violations/probation he left behind there. He could be a big risk, is South Carolina willing to take it?

They should be used to it by now. Clemson has always been more successful than little sister in Columbia.

Nope.

National titles: Clemson 3. UofSC 0
Conference titles: Clemson 25. UofSC 1
Major bowl berths: Clemson 12. UofSC 0
Series record: Clemson 71 UofSC 42 Tie 4

The last time UofSC lead the head to head series was after the first game in 1896. The last time the head to head series was tied was after the second game in 1897. Clemson holds the series lead, the largest margin of victory, the most points scored, and the longest winning streak.

I get this impression about SC as well. But, I wonder what part of this issue is SC taking coaches past their peaks. Could still produce and compete, but never make the team the rock of a conference.

I hope they don’t just hire a name and actually get someone who can produce there. Build it up with someone who knows coaching in the southeast and not just taking a guy who people already have figured out.

As good a coach as he was, the only period during which USC was more than mediocre during Spurrier's tenure were the years for which they were sanctioned for recruiting violations, including cash payments. Geography isn't their friend, as they have not had great recruiting success from neighboring states like North Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia the way Clemson, Tennessee and UGa have.

It was definitely time for Muschamp to go and truthfully it should’ve been done last year.

My educated guess is Billy Napier from Louisiana will be the call

Personal preference is Chadwell from Coastal but I get the sense that he’s the backup option to Napier

The recruiting violations were pretty minor and mostly due to incompetence of our compliance staff not doing their due diligence. We had some seniors getting discount long term rates at a hotel and from what I remember a booster paid some high school coach illegally to bring his players to one of our camps

We lost like 6 scholarships over 3 years and didn’t even get a bowl ban. Peanuts compared to what was going on everywhere else

In fairness, both Holtz and Spurrier were old, on the downsides of their coaching careers, they were not the Holtz of Notre Dame and Spurrier of Florida, and both did do some significant winning at SC, at least compared to Muschamp.

That said, yes, SC does not have a history of winning, and that's probably not by accident. That makes them like all Carolina teams other than Clemson, though.

Minus Holtz first year (0-11) he did well. SC was a mess when he came in.

Sharing the state with Clemson; sharing the division with Florida, Georgia; sharing the conference with Texas A&M, LSU, Alabama, Auburn. Ya, not easy...

I remember when he beat Ohio State in back to back bowl games. That was pretty big.

True. They have done well in baseball and women’s basketball (winning recent-ish national titles) plus a final four appearance for men’s basketball. Football is just tough.

Good points about buyout mitigation. In Muschamp's case, his SC buyout does have mitigation, so if he lands another coaching job the amount SC owes him will be reduced. But in Florida's case, they had to pay him the $6 million even though he landed the SC job.

Just out of curiosity, who is the most revered coach ever at South Carolina? Is it Spurrier or someone earlier like Jim Carlen or Joe Morrison (a Cincinnati alum/player btw)?
