Good find. Got me thinking it's kind of amazing that he's already the longest-tenured head coach in town among the biggies (Reds, Bengals, UC and XU hoops, FCC)

RE: Cbus article on Fick
I always like the Cbus takes on Fick. Lot of history there. I think it's interesting all the Michigan fans that want him to replace Harbaugh, but don't really give any thought to the dynamic there. If he succeeded at UM, which would have to include winning v Osu often, he'd have to alienate his hometown guys at the expense of their bitter rival. If he doesn't succeed at UM, he would be in the firing zone for all the UM fans, and likely be measured to never lead Osu or ND. Translation, a job likely not worth the pressure or risk when you have things going well. Having to deal with Osu, Msu and likely Wisconsin often(annually) is not an enviable position to set yourself up in.

Basically agree with what you say except that I think UM is in a very enviable position conference-wise. OSU is obviously a powerhouse but it also provides an opportunity while I think you overestimate Wisconsin and especially MSU.

Wisconsin is in the other division so you only usually see them in the conference title game. Msu is not a threat to UM when UM is doing well. PSU is though. Osu is the obvious giant but they're on a historic run and maybe they eventually come back. Long story short if you're doing well there you're no worse than neck and neck with PSU for #2 in that conference and there's a lot of wins in that conference

Great article. For some reason this article and the above discussions for me thinking...

If the Playoffs were to expand, with a path for the top G5 program, would you rather be in a P5 conference where you had to face OSU, PSU, Wisconsin, etc... or would you rather be in Cincinnati?

I assume any position you took at a P5 conference would be due to a really poor record and require a rebuild, where as you already have the foundation built here to be the top tier G5 program most years.

P5 every day. The reason being is this is much larger than the team's chances getting into the playoffs. You have to consider the bowl game portfolio of the conference, the money, and most importantly how it affects the entire athletic department. When we first got relegated to the AAC I thought it would affect football more than hoops. Truth be told, being in the AAC is putting a glass ceiling on the program. We are in a 2-3 bid league, which also hit the bottom line when you consider money distributed from NCAA tournament appearances.

As an Athletic Department, it’s a no brainer obviously. I’m looking at this solely in terms of Fick and potentially future coaches. As a football coach, those aren’t really your concerns though.

The bowl tie-ins are definitely something to consider, though ultimately I think you have to like your chances to compete for the NY6 bowl, or Playoff birth, most years considering what we have built (assuming CFP expansion).

It would definitely be one less reason Fick would want to leave for mid tier B10 jobs.

I have no concern of about Fick going to PSU as the only Catholic HS is small and has NO football.

Maybe another way to get at what you are asking is given the current landscape would you prefer to be a fan of UC or a fan of a team in a situation like Pittsburgh (or Purdue, Indiana, Ill, UK, WVU, UL etc.). My take is that we are all going to have our ups and downs largely tied to the coaching status. You could look at it both ways (over the past decade and at the next decade) and I think I'd rather be a UC fan - even generically speaking. Of course, it's hard to say how much of that is due to us catching lightning in a bottle in Coach Fickell.

So obviously you have to go with the P5 money, but as a fan this isn't a bad fit in a lot of ways.

As a fan and also as a coach. People mention Michigan and Penn State. If the CFP expanded, I think it’s just one less reason for Fick to move if there was a clearer pathway to the Playoff.

As a fan it’s also similar because once again we have a clear path to the playoff. While it would likely take a special season still, it would be a lot easier than the current (non)pathway.

Imagine if the B10 didn’t reinstate their season. Obviously they may not be clowning on the lesser B10 teams having a bad year, but a lot of the Buckeyes were adopting Cincinnati as their team this year. That type of buzz and excitement would dramatically shift perception. A lot of the fans that tuned in would probably continue to follow the team as long as they were putting similar quality teams on the field.

It’s a bit of a missed opportunity, but we can’t complain either. We are still shifting narratives and gaining a lot of hype and fans. Just have to be patient. If we think this team is good, imagine in a few years when some of these higher recruiting classes mature.
