Columbus, and really all of central Ohio, revolves around Ohio St athletics. The Blue Jackets could lose all 82 games and no one would notice but Ohio St football or basketball is performing poorly about 12 counties lose their collective minds.

Clemson is really an extension of Upstate South Carolina. While relatively self contained, it us close enough to Greenville and Anderson to be part of their orbit too. Places like Starkville, Pullman, or State College are college towns surrounded by fields.

Thanks for the great answers. I was especially interested to learn CU gets so many students from Pac-10 country.

Cal Berkeley is in a much more populated part of the Bay Area than Stanford. Berkeley has 150K but really the campus is on the Oakland border too (another 500K). The Bay Area isn't a college town (neither is Los Angeles), but both cities are much more supportive of their Pac 12 teams than any other huge city with colleges in it (NYC, Chicago, Houston, Philly, etc.). All four of the Pac-12 schools have 60-100K seat football stadiums, which can get close to full in normal days when their teams are playing well.

College Park is basically in the DC area. It really shouldn't be on any tiny population list.

I've spent four years in Urbana/Champaign, IL and two years in State College, PA. They are in the middle of nowhere but they are in Illinois and Pennsylvania respectively and get many of their students from big cities/suburban areas like the Chicago, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh areas. Charlottesville of course comes from Virginia and I'm guessing draws from the DC area as does Virginia Tech. Then you have Clemson which is from a tiny state and isn't close to anywhere (about 150 miles from Charlotte and Atlanta but that's pushing it). Oxford is from a tiny state but is about 86 miles from Memphis.

But the award for the most irrelevant college town in P5? Starkville. Irrelevant state and nowhere near any relevant city. They really should be an FCS team, definitely not in the #1 conference.

Did you know that 14% of the undergrads at TCU are also from California?

They draw 56k attendance. What Mississippi St does in fan support for a school who should be FCS is amazing.

Mississippi State is a fine university with very underrated academics and athletics. It is more than worthy of SEC membership, schmolik.

As to the "relevance" of Starkville ... that is rather subjective. I've never visited the town and probably would not find it very appealing. When I think of classic smallish college towns, I don't visualize Starkville. But others might like it fine. Most places have redeeming qualities, and I would assume Starkville does, too.

And 3/4 of Alabama/Mississippi State game attendances are probably Alabama fans, 3/4 of LSU/Mississippi State game attendances are probably LSU fans, 3/4 of Auburn/Mississippi State game attendances are probably Auburn fans, 3/4 of Texas A&M/Mississippi State game attendances are probably Texas A&M fans, need I go on?

The only people who are actually Mississippi State fans are Mississippi State students who weren't smart enough to go to Mississippi or better out of state schools and the 26,500 people who live in Starkville because the rest of the state cheers for Mississippi or out of state schools. Are there any Mississippi State fans on this board? Sorry you couldn't get into a top 200 school. It's bad enough to live in one of the poorest dumbest states in the country but to not even be the first choice in the state?

His post reads like he has an ex who went to MSU.

Starkville doesn't have a wonderful rep and no one will confuse it for a big market, but their endowment is over half a billion dollars, their football program showed last decade they were clearly capable of competing at a high level, they just made March Madness in 2019, and their baseball team regularly makes the CWS. State is clearly worthy of their spot as a P5 SEC school.

No you needn't go on because you don't have a clue about the subject matter. Mississippi State fans travel well and are liked by just about everyone in the SEC. At their home games the visiting fan base will get and use about 12 to 15 thousand tickets out of 60,000 plus. What's more State fans tend to show up even when they don't have a shot at anything. They are one of the more loyal fan bases in the SEC.

And for the record the schools in Mississippi are tasked with tending the needs of the state first.

I have never seen this much negativity towards Mississippi State by anyone other than an Ole Miss fan.

I guess you enjoy trolling because I have a hard time believing you care that much.

RE: Smallest and largest cities in the P5
Calling East Lansing or College Park MD, small is ridiculous. Just because you are physically small town or city imbedded in an urban metro, does not make you rural or small.

Chapel Hill for instance can be called a College Town, but it abuts Durham and Raleigh. The "Triangle" has over 2 million people. Duke, NC State, and UNC squeeze into it.

Then the two smallest are Mississippi schools, then Tuscaloosa, Pullman, Washington; State College, Pa; Bloomington, Indiana; Columbia, Mizzou; West Lafayette, Indiana; Lincoln, Neb;
Gainesville, Florida; Iowa City, Iowa; Auburn, Alabama; and then Syracuse.

Small to large when looking at the overall metro is:

MSU
Ole Miss
Bama
Washington State
Penn State
Indiana
TAMU
Mizzou
Purdue
Nebraska
Florida,
Iowa
Auburn
Syracuse

From large to small it would be (and number of P-5 per person in metro:

Rutgers (21 M) 8 Pro Franchises
UCLA/USC (8 M) 5 Pro Franchises
NW/ND (4.5 M) 4 Pro Franchises
TCU (8 M) 4 Pro Franchises
MD (7 M) 6 Pro Franchises
Miami (6 .8 M) 4 Pro Franchises
GT (6.6 M) 4 Pro Franchises
BC (6 M) 4 Pro Franchises
Stanford/Cal (4.8) 5 Pro Franchises
Washington (5 M) 3 Pro Franchises
Pittsburgh (2.5 M) 3 Pro Franchises
Texas (2.2 m) No Pro Franchises
Ohio State (2.6 M) 1 Pro Franchise
Duke/UNC/NCSU (700K) 1 Pro Franchise
Vandy (2.0 M) 1 Pro Franchise

The individual characteristics of the campus site is not always congruent to the population area. The beauty of some of these places in the boondocks is that a football game is a major event in the area.

Miami (6 .8 M) 4 Pro Franchises
GT (6.6 M) 4 Pro Franchises
BC (6 M) 4 Pro Franchises
Stanford/Cal (4.8) 5 Pro Franchises
Washington (5 M) 3 Pro Franchises
Pittsburgh (2.5 M) 3 Pro Franchises
Texas (2.2 m) No Pro Franchises
Ohio State (2.6 M) 1 Pro Franchise
Duke/UNC/NCSU (700K) 1 Pro Franchise

The individual characteristics of the campus site is not always congruent to the population area. The beauty of some of these places in the boondocks is that a football game is a major event in the area.

Lubbock? Morgantown? Blacksburg? And Syracuse is similar in metro size as Madison too, both about 650K. Not among the small college towns.

The Colorado president was pointing out that California far and away has more of the CU alums than any other state. Texas is 2nd. Arizona is 3rd and has more than all the rest of the Big 12 states combined.

Chapel Hill for instance can be called a College Town, but it abuts Durham and Raleigh. The "Triangle" has over 2 million people. Duke, NC State, and UNC squeeze into it.

Then the two smallest are Mississippi schools, then Tuscaloosa, Pullman, Washington; State College, Pa; Bloomington, Indiana; Columbia, Mizzou; West Lafayette, Indiana; Lincoln, Neb;
Gainesville, Florida; Iowa City, Iowa; Auburn, Alabama; and then Syracuse.

Small to large when looking at the overall metro is:

MSU
Ole Miss
Bama
Washington State
Penn State
Indiana
TAMU
Mizzou
Purdue
Nebraska
Florida,
Iowa
Auburn
Syracuse

From large to small it would be (and number of P-5 per person in metro:

Rutgers (21 M) 8 Pro Franchises
UCLA/USC (8 M) 5 Pro Franchises
NW/ND (4.5 M) 4 Pro Franchises
TCU (8 M) 4 Pro Franchises
MD (7 M) 6 Pro Franchises
