Rick Kale passes away
Apologies if already mentioned, but we lost one of the best ever this week. Rick and I were 30 years apart at Memphis but he became a very good friend over the years. I'm gonna miss hangin out w/him and friends and drinkin beer at his camper the night before home games. He was one of the most generous guys I've ever met and he loved his family, friends and his Tigers.

RICK KALE DIES OF COVID 19 AT AGE 70

It is with great sadness that the M Club has learned of the passing of former football defensive back Rick Kale on November 10th. Kale arrived at then Memphis State University in the fall of 1968 and spent his freshman season as the Tigers’ leading wide receiver on the frosh squad. Not eligible under NCAA rules to play varsity during his first season, Kale led the frosh squad in receiving with 18 catches for 251 yards and three touchdowns in just four games. He was moved to defensive back in 1969 and lettered behind David Berrong, registering nine tackles and one interception. Kale became a starter in the secondary as a junior and led the squad in tackles with 60 and in interceptions with five. He registered 15 tackles against Tulsa and had a career outing in the win over Southern Mississippi when he logged nine tackles, two fumble recoveries, an interception in the Tiger end zone to end a USM scoring drive and recovered an on-sides kick to preserve the Memphis shutout victory. For his play in 1970, Kale was named to the All-Missouri Conference first-team. As a senior, he was credited 79 total tackles and helped the Tigers to their first major bowl game, the victory over San Jose State in the Pasadena Bowl.
