Covid costs catch up to Charlotte
Charlotte has announced that AD employees making over $50k will have to take 10 furlough days between 11/23 and 6/30/2021. They can choose their days. Their benefits/insurance will not be affected. This hits 48 employees including head coaches.

AD Mike Hill said we have lost about $4.5 million in revenue, and he expects that to grow to $6 million by June. Costs have also gone up, and we have spent $1 million on Covid testing which could grow to about $3 million.

Hill said he has no expectation of cutting sports. “We are nowhere near heading in that direction. It’s not a consideration,” Hill said.

Very sorry to hear this. That is bad news for everyone. Suspect there will be announcements like this from other schools in the near future.

I wish I could share Hill’s optimism that reducing/cutting sports is “not a consideration.” I think over the next few years, it will become a consideration — both for Charlotte and for others.

Lost revenue is one thing but there are so many federal funds being poured into states to cover covid costs. All the testing costs should be covered through grants along with PPE and counter-measures. In WV alone there has been close to $100M in grants to higher ed.

UNCC fans made quite a bit of fun of others for cutting sports (down to the number of sports UNCC offers by the way) or similar cost cutting measures. Doubtful humility will be a side effect of this announcement for all though.

Sorry to hear anyone being impacted by this disease.

The hidden benefits of being in a low revenue conference - you can’t build an outrageous cost structure that needs fed regardless of revenue.

WVU essentially mortgaged their TV revenue stream for the next 20 years when they joined the Big 12 in order to make facilities upgrades. That’s a cost that can’t be trimmed if revenue drops. Got to make those bond payments.

Curious to know how covid is effecting other university's enrollment #'s.

USM just announced the other day that our enrollment actually went up and reached the highest it's been in 6 years.

This was released by WKU a couple months ago. Not sure if the final numbers were much different from what is cited below.

https://www.wku.edu/news/articles/index....cleid=9067

Quote:WKU’s freshman class grew by 16.4 percent over fall 2019. The 446-student increase is the largest in more than 30 years. And the average grade-point average of that class is 3.44, the highest on record.

Big talk from someone whose school only has a 5% lower admission rate, lower freshman SAT scores and is ranked lower than us in US News rankings.

That's fair. Right out of the gate Charlotte was well positioned to handle this, and nobody lost their jobs, scholarships, or teams, but we are nine months in and it could certainly last through the end of the academic year. About the furloughs Hill said “But no one is built to survive this storm that we’re in (indefinitely). I say that not as a hedge, but we’ve got to get past this. And we will.” The furloughs are not because we cannot meet payroll, but an effort to get out in front of the problem to ensure that the impacts will be minimal.

Very reasonable. I’ve learned not to throw stones at the misfortune of others. It will someday be your turn.

From a practical standpoint, any idea how much money over all this is supposed to save the school?
