RE: BYU wants one or two more games
I have not been impressed with Cincinnati today.

BYU just schedule Marshall for next Saturday.

Contract a home and home for a future year and play ball.

I think that could really force the CFP hand. A game between BYU and UC could be between #7 and #8 in the country. Hard for the CFP to ignore that, it would be a better matchup than some of the P5 CCGs.

Agreed. Particularly if there is no clear cut Number 4 team (presumably from the PAC 12 or Big 12)

BYU has barely played anyone with a pulse. They will not be ranked top 10 by cfp.

BYU will be/is ranked behind Cincy. Cincy will either be top 4 in which case no reason to schedule or they will be ranked outside the top 5 and need one or more to lose in front of them, since beating #8 when you are number #7 won't make you #4 unless #4, #5, and #6 lose.

But, beating #8 (vs. say, #25) will do a better job of preventing others jumping you when #4, #5, and #6 lose.

RE: BYU wants one or two more games
We'll see what the committee respects--but the analysts that have argued in favor of BYU point to these factors:
- They had all but one game (their FCS game) cancelled or modified and have had to rebuild the entire schedule on the fly from scratch from teams willing/able to play. That means their schedule lacking strength isn't their fault and shouldn't factor so much against them as if they had intentionally not scheduled tough. They originally had 6 P5 teams on their 2020 schedule before all P5s dropped non-conference games.
- Their toughest test on their schedule was a ranked #21/23 (at the time) Boise State. BYU only handed them their "worst home loss in 24 years". Boise State has beaten the other 4 teams they have faced in 2020.
- Their "worst" game this year was a 27-20 win against 6-4 UTSA. Even including this game, they have averaged 47.6 points for and 13.9 points against in their 9 games never allowing more than 26 points. The BYU offense has topped 40 points in 8 of their 9 games.
- The eye test. Analysts have said if you watch the film the team is solid in nearly all aspects of the game especially at QB, WR, and both lines.
- It is too bad that Army declined to reschedule BYU after their covid-19 cancellation in week 3, because then we would have two common opponents to evaluate. BYU beat Houston on the road in week 7 43-26. Cincinnati got them at home for a 38-10 win in week 8.

At the same time, I'm not knocking Cincinnati. They do have wins over ranked SMU and Army so the committee may decide they are the clear leader between the two--though with Cincinnati the highest ranked G5 and BYU an independent, they aren't fighting over the same thing if I recall the process. We'll see.

BYU will make a BCS bowl this year regardless of what UC does should they take care of business. ND has to take the ACC spot this year if they runner up. They are an ACC school this year. That means A&M/Wisc/NWU would go to the Orange. Other two Bowls are non contract this year, so only Big 12 and PAC 12 champ guaranteed. That leaves three schools up for grabs for Big 6 Bowls, so UC and BYU would most likely be last standing schools rounding out those slots.

BYU has a great chance for a NY6 bowl. Wouldn’t surprise me at all if they get it. But that’s nowhere close to guaranteed, even if they beat San Diego State and are 10-0.

It isn’t BYU’s fault, but it is BYU’s problem. Life isn’t fair, example #8,451,809

BYU and Cincinnati are not competing for the same slot, and really cannot be, no matter what happens.

If Cincinnati is undefeated, they will get the G5 slot no matter what other teams do or don’t do. If Cincinnati is not undefeated, they will not be considered for an at-large berth to the NY6 bowls, no matter what other teams do or don’t do.

If BYU is 10-0, I think they have a good shot at NY6. Better than 50/50 shot, in fact. But it will hinge on how a few things unfold in P5-Land. Will just have to wait and see.

The NY6 games are the Rose and Sugar Bowls. Let's assume those are filled by Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson and Oregon. So that leaves:

Fiesta ..... TBA vs TBA

Orange .... Notre Dame vs Florida (SEC runner-up)

Cotton ..... Texas AM vs Oklahoma (Big 12 champ)

Peach ...... Cincy (G5 rep) vs TBA

At this point, we have placed all the teams currently ranked ahead of BYU in the AP and Coaches polls, and we have satisfied all the contractual tie-ins. So with 3 slots available, it seems extremely unlikely to me that a 10-0 BYU would not get one of those NY6 spots.

Even if you don't think an unbeaten PAC champ gets in to the CFP, such that they take an NY6 spot, then that will almost surely mean that a team in one of the NY6 spots above, like a Florida or Notre Dame, gets in instead, so it doesn't alter that math. The only way I don't think they get in is if the CFP rankings that come out Tuesday have BYU substantially lower than the AP and Coaches have them. We will know that soon enough.

We all know that Boise is BYU’s best win of the season so far.

What’s their second-best win? There really is no good answer from BYU’s standpoint.

It's going to boil down to how the CFP committee views them. No question, one way to look at BYU is that they haven't beaten anyone. Another is that they have passed the eye and smell tests, they look like a well-oiled machine with good athletes.

So far, the pollsters have taken the second view. If the CFP does as well, it is hard to see how BYU misses the NY6 if they win out. Playoffs are another matter.

I can picture those 3 TBA slots filled with #2 team from PAC — presumably Southern Cal with 1 loss to Oregon — and the #2 and #3 teams from B1G — presumably Northwestern with 1 loss to Ohio State, and Indiana with 1 loss to Ohio State.

Now, having said that, I can picture BYU in one of those slots, too! Not trying to downplay their chances. But I don’t view this as something where BYU controls it’s destiny and simply has to get past SDSU. More to it than that, imho. We’ll see.

BYU is scheduled to play SDSU on Dec 12th. SDSU's game with Fresno for this Friday has been cancelled. Both schools should try to move their game up to this Friday.

BYU should then try to get a decent game for Dec 5th or 12th.

RE: BYU wants one or two more games
BYU's FBS opponents are 29-34. The best win record wise is still UTSA at 6-4, I think only three teams they have played have winning records. They will not be highly ranked. They are also gun shy about a PAC game because they could lose it if other PAC teams end up free for a conference opponent. Their opportunities to climb are gone and their schedule is CUSA-ish

These are more likely than Quo's although to be honest I don't think the PAC is getting there team in.

Orange......Miami (one loss) vs Florida (SEC runner up)
Cotton.......Texas AnM (one loss) vs Oklahoma/Iowa St
Fiesta.........Notre Dame vs USC (one loss)
Peach..........Cincy vs Georgia (loss to Alabama, Florida)

There really is no room in the inn for BYU we have consistently seen the committee rank non-A5's undefeated behind one loss and even two loss (SEC) power teams. With no p5 opponents BYU is in a worse situation than any previous G5 NY6 representative, who all played and beat at least one and finished ranked lower. They also do not have a guarenteed slot to fall back on.

Tuesday night their bubble bursts.

If BYU goes undefeated, I believe they will get in the NY6, and will most likely be paired with Cincinnati.

They are true--yes. For several reasons. Outlined by local media: https://www.ksl.com/article/50054044/pat...washington

- Since no game had been scheduled for the coming week and the team wrapped up their Saturday game, coach Kalani Sitake informed the players they would have off Thanksgiving weekend. Several players already have booked flights home to their various destinations.

- According to Pac-12 rules, the conference maintains the highest priority is to reschedule previously cancelled conference games BEFORE allowing a non-conference game to take place. Washington-Washington State was just cancelled today--and Washington called BYU. But let's say BYU agrees and begins game prep on the short week. If the Utah-Arizona State game (which was pushed back from Saturday to Sunday to try and help Arizona State pass covid testing issues) gets cancelled 48 hours before the game is played on Sunday, then the conference would prioritize a Washington - Utah game over an agreed to Washington - BYU game. Even after BYU would have cancelled the teams' plans for Thanksgiving holiday. This was evidenced by the recent Cal - UCLA game which was a last minute reschedule due to other conference cancellations.

- If you want to add BYU to your schedule, BYU is going to at least ask for the promise that the game would go as scheduled and not be ripped out from underneath them like a football for Charlie Brown. And right now Washington can't give that promise per conference rules.

With everyone else in the equation looking out for themselves, BYU is content to keep their plans to have a bye week this week and see how things stack up with the college football playoff rankings. I would expect a different reaction if BYU needs to improve their standings with an 11th game after seeing the rankings or someone is willing to step up and commit solidly to play on 12/5 rather than saying "we'll play you unless some other conference game takes priority--we'll let you know 48 hours before kickoff".

RE: BYU wants one or two more games
One big knock on the Pac-12 is the number of games played as they started so late and have cancelled so many games due to covid. We have a maximum of 4 weeks remaining and only 4 schools have managed to play 3 games. Utah and Arizona State have only played 1 so far. 2 Pac-12 games have been cancelled per week since they began playing so the most games a Pac-12 team could play is 7 as a ceiling but 5 or 6 is a very real possibility. Is that enough games to get moved into a NY6 bowl game?

That option was discussed today on social media. Problem is the coach told the team they had this week off for the Thanksgiving holiday after their Saturday game as no game had been scheduled.

A game could still be possible on 12/5.
